I have seen that everyone is complaining about this game and abusing or cursing OOO. Have you ever thought why they gave us dash and bash? why they gave up battle sprites? why they gave us one of the most beautiful of costumes and accessories(keeping aside trojan stuff), the removal of the energy fee on elevators, the difficulty adjustment? The changes are the reason some players are leaving but that players themselves wanted the change, i havent even seen one thank you after the battle sprites update, the difficulty level, the elevator fee removal. And now, i demand we all say thank you to OOO to what they have done to satisfy us players! Thank you OOO! YOU ROCK!

:/

-Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and from my point of view, the apocrean, warden and recon rangers gear looked AWEFUL, I mean seriously, go to Haven, and see how many ppl wear them, nearly none!

-Battle sprite are just a novelty, to me they are only an additional heart pendent, the quill is good, but not to a point that the out come of a battle is dependent upon that. Let's all to be honest here, they are nothing more than Icing on the cake.

-Dash is good, bash, not so much, why would anyone wanna charge into a group of enemies with your shield health halfed?

-Free elevator, yeah... why would anyone play more than 10 levels a day? Maybe some hardcore nut job like Arc will play another 200 rounds of elite FSC, but I think I will just play the daily prestiege and be done with.

-Forge is an ugly addition to the free elevator, forge SUCKS, with radiant drought adding insult to the injury, I think I am not the only one here who wants forge to be removed or revamped.

We don't have to thank OOO for anything, they made a game in order to convince us that it is worthy to pay money for, and since they failed in convincing me, I decided not to pay. Try harder next time OOO, try harder.

For a free 2 play player the only way I see myself having fun with Spiral Knights is to grind fsc 24/7. I'm not that good of a trader and I see no point in paying for a game that is intended to be completely free to play. That's only me. If you don't want to have millions of cr and ce that's up to you.

:/ so you play SK for the sole purpose of grinding FSC? ...while missing 99% of the other content in the game? Have you ever get bored of cutting slags into hamburgers and shoot Vanaduke in the butt with a load of blitz needle?

"Of course not" -Arc

Well, then do as you pleased, there are thousands of good games out there that you missed while you collecting dust(on your real body) grinding FSC. And also, getting millions of Cr and CE was never the goal of SK, it was to have fun(that applies to all games), I don't care if I can't 1 mill CR in SK, as long as I can have fun, it is all that matters.

Actually I have done everything there is to offer in this game. there isn't anything left for me to do other than grind fsc. My type of fun is the making crowns part, especially now that I have nothing else to do in spiral knights.

Edit: I have a very good collection of xbox, ps3 and steam games. When ever I find time to play them I do. But there's something about Spiral Knights that draws me back in to play it. Btw how I play Spiral Knights is non of your business. So this discussion is pointless. If I want to stand around in haven all day wasting my time that's my problem. If I want to play LD all day that's my problem, if I want to troll beggars that's my problem. You mind your own and enjoy the game how you want to ok.

@ Applauses

so you only want to do like 10 elevators a day maximum? you want to buy orbs when you can get them just by playing? this system is awesome, except the heating system.

Lets see,

the old system you could alt drag, and tab yourself on a FSC run, you could get 16/18k plus 6 tokens a run, And even if you didn't alt drag you get about 8k/9k a run, that's enough to buy 100 ce (if CE was 8/9k, which it was at the time) only takes 50 ce to go do an FSC run through missions, so you make about 4.5k a run if your not dragging an alt, plus you could also do arena runs (full arena nets around 2k/3k, and only costs 10 ce), doing 3 of those is about enough to buy 100 CE. Also, you could revive your team mates by donating your own health.

The new system, you can do runs as much as you want, heating has become a real pain, crafting things is easier, There is no way to drag alts efficiently, Reviving is very costly, and the UI now looks really cluttered and weird.

so the old system, was, IMO, Alot better, but that's just my 2 cents.

Seiran : the honeymoon period has been over for a while lol

Some things were good (and extremely magical and appreciated) when they were new, but once the honeymoon is over and the 'magic' is gone, then you have to deal with reality and the 'flaws'.

To go on with the relationship metaphor (happy Valentine's day lo0l), even if they were really nice at first, if they stop treating us to good things after a while, we'll feel unloved. At that point, we either become uninterested and walk away or attempt to nag in order to make things feel right again.

Get it?

The people who complain are the ones who want to keep liking the game.

old and new

@Fallconn:
In the new system, people should be encouraged to play near each other (so they don't have to spend time split up while gathering drops, and also kill monsters faster especially in Elite where they have more health), skilled players are rewarded with a surplus of sparks and can trickle it down to the lesser skilled.

Theoretically, it would discourage alts (play with other people!), encourage people to play together as a team in order to avoid pointless deaths and pick up drops together. I'm amazed at how many (unskilled) players continue on trying to be solo heroes, die, then complain about how much of a lack of teamwork there is when it's all their own faults lol.

If we really wanna go hardcore on old vs new, it's actually through the 'flaws' in the game that people came up with the best teamwork:

- Sending out a scout character to act as a bridge for people to skip floors was all due not to the designers, but the players' creativity. Abusing and looping arenas, all due to the players working together.
- The HP rev draining an entire party's health led to people thinking about how skilled each of their teammates were in order to survive things like danger rooms back when quicksilvers were way too powerful.

____

@Deadly-Grimm:
I love the fact that I don't need UVs to be able to experiment with different loadouts thanks to sprite perks. I want to make a Drakon so I can get the sprinting skill. I like not having to feel pressured to kill EVERYTHING in the stages to make up for the amount of energy used (I avoided Arcade because you'd need to make at least 700-800 cr per floor to make up for the energy of playing stages).

It's not to say the other features were bad. Actually it's the opposite; they're good to the point that after many months, they feel normal to the game.
If the good things fade to the background, then the bad sticks out even more.

As for me, I asked for none of those features and took them at face value. Also, the word you're looking for isn't 'critic' (though I do think looking at things critically doesn't hurt), but 'hypocritical'.

I said this in a thread a long time ago, but historically, Three Rings has introduced major changes that punch their old players in the face, all for the sake of the newer players:

You wouldn't see it now, but there was a huge crafting market in the past. People would make money from crafting, then Three Rings did a bunch of major patches that changed the balance of crafting cost from Crowns to Energy and introduced item binding, leading to the destruction of the 4* and 5* crafting market and throwing the older players in a rage.

The surviving players from that were mostly newer players like myself who were just starting out and didn't know/care about the crafting market. We made money going through the Arcade and selling recipes. Three Rings introduced the Mission System and the Hall of Heroes, essentially killing the Arcade population (Want a normal recipe? Go through Hall of Heroes. Want to do a boss run? Skip the levels and go straight to the boss via mission interface!). Insert an increase of people whining about how nobody plays arcade anymore and only do boss missions (and despite this, with Energy costs being a thing, they'd have to do boss runs too, if they wanted to save up for anything).

The most current change to throw older players in a rage is the forge system. Just like the crafting patch, the old players knew that they had it better in the past, and the new players just have to deal with it. The people who were -almost there- realize they've gotten shafted when they hit the walls created by the lack of 5* crystal drops, and the new players will (hopefully for them) just accept it as 'normal'. But if they don't... that's a problem.

Anyway, like I said before, people complain because they want to like the game (if it just weren't for this or that issue). I think Shamanalah is annoying and naive but he sticks around the forums constantly saying how he had these things he wanted to do and craft but the Radiants got in the way. He claims not to play anymore but he posts about how this or that game does things better. If he was really done with wanting to like the game, he would have just left silently.

You are right that there have certainly been patches that have added some new things to the game. But Seiran is also right in that nearly none of that is oriented to appeasing SK's veteran players. Read his post to understand what we're getting at here.
I will add that there have been three things added that were meant to appease the vets of the game though. Shadow Lairs, Guilds, and Danger Missions. Guilds are great since they let the players hang out better and give them cosmetic goals to work towards, but the Shadow Lairs and Danger Missions barely add anything to the game. They're essentially single set pieces that aren't even greatly original in the way they function. They're nothing special.

As for the updates... Battle Sprites, the new revive system, difficulty, and Dash 'n Bash... they're all okay, but they all have one glaring problem. They don't add anything to new to "play."
They're new mechanics to use on the same thing that we've been playing for years now. They're ways to kill things faster, dodge things better, and make more money, but aren't anything new to really play. It's different ways to eat the same meal we've had for nearly three years.
They don't expand upon the game in any substantial way.
New levels, new progression, new enemies, and just moving forward towards the goal of getting to the Core. THAT would be something substantial. Instead we get things like Missions, which essentially lets older players replay what they already have, make no progress to the Core, add no new enemies, doesn't give them anywhere to progress to, nothing new to aim for.
It's all just a bunch of nothing with a lot of text and shortcuts to bosses.

And please keep in mind that the forums are really a minority. We're certainly a negative bunch around here, but that's because a lot of us have taken a step back and gave the game a good hard look.
I can't speak for everyone here, but a good majority of us are not filled with hate and malice for the game.
Rather, what I think a lot of us feel is a profound sense of disappointment.

Spiral Knights has a ton of potential, but to see it continually squandered on updates that instead of expanding on the wonderful base that it had set, work to completely rework that base into something else entirely. So many mechanics and ideas that were once solid and could be built upon, are being reworked from the ground up. Things like health revives, Minerals and Arcade building and Arcade exploration, Heating and crafting, and even the Mist Energy system were all great things. Sure they needed some polishing, especially the Energy system, but completely taking them out in favor of Sparks of Life, Missions, and SPRITE FOOD of all things was just... dumb.

Also, I want to add that they really worked themselves into a corner by allowing us to go all the way up to 5* with basically no real plans to expand onto 6* or even 7* or 8* equipment.
5* seems to have always been the end of the road for them and that severely restricted the kind of content they could create. If they had no plans on making Tier 4 equipment, they should have restricted us all to Tier 1 or 2 equips and then release the end-game Tier 3 things later. Let us progress with the game, not let the game sit stagnant while everyone wanted to progress further. Instead they let us all hit the limited Tier 3 end-game and sit there with nothing to do but sit and craft in our lavish Guild Halls.
That was pretty dumb too.

Why the old system was better:

Cause the P2P could actually get somewhere.

'nuff said.

Oh yeah the F2P section is great now. But P2P went from 6$ to upgrade anything to 50$ to upgrade 2 items... Oh yeah the F2P section looks nice..... *whistle* who's gonna pay OOO now? F2P... heh with people playing since launch and still F2P to be praising BS update is really funny and ironic in some way.

Either way we all know OOO only has a lead artist and the lead dev left so... only promos and little content... broken and glitched probably too

Edit: Rather, what I think a lot of us feel is a profound sense of disappointment.

This ^^^^^^^^^

Disapointment from a team that used to care for this game and now... After getting bored of SK and moving to other community... I can see how shady OOO is... "Behind the scene changes"........ "Behind the scene changes"............ "behind the scene changes"..... Geezus can't you give a little enjoyment of these updates? can't have too much fun with patch notes huh? I mean... When did you ever seen a game put up patches note like these? It's quite disgusting to see this as a community when you are awaiting a MAJOR update.

EA and Blizzard treat their customer like this and even though I have 3 copy of Diablo II and 1 of SCII. I will never buy anything again from EA or Blizzard due to their lacking of communication with the community

I was also disappointed about the energy removal. I find the energy restriction to be fulfilling enough as a form of energy sink, and play restriction. It helps F2P manage their energy, and also pays P2P crowns for energy in return. Honestly, I don't get why people can lose so much energy and not earn back enough. 100 energy per day? Pcch, 10 clockworks trips is like 2 hours worth of play time. Not enough? Buy some CE and get a boost of play time, until you had enough, log off and come back to get your free 100 energy again.

@Shamanalalalalala

I kinda hate the behind the scenes changes too, I decided that SpiralSpy is the best way to go and find what changes are there. In fact, there were new items, but obviously a company decided that it is better to hide everything from us...

@ Zaffy
I never really understood a lot of players utter disgust at the Mist System.
It allowed you to play for about an hour and a half on average, which I admit was a little skimpy and should have been increased a little bit, but it worked with how limited the content was (and still is) in SK. Now players have all the time in the world to see just how ridiculously little is available to the players and I don't see that as being much better.
Before we had small peeks at what OOO kept behind the curtain, but with Missions and infinite playtime they've pulled back the curtain and revealed there wasn't much behind it at all.

But it's no use reminiscing. The Energy System is gone and OOO would have to be truly crazy to try to restrict players in the same way again.
For now, OOO needs to focus on making the Arcade a truly engaging experience to keep their players interested. With how little there is, they need to do something to keep it all from getting repetitive.

IMHO the only bad thing I have to say about OOO on their game model is 2 thing: Drop rate... Never in a game I've seen people struggle with drop rate SOOOO MUCH they *litterally* take out items to fix it and they still haven'T come back. Remember that influx of Prismatic Dapper combo? and ghostly aura?

If SK could get drop rate fine... most of the complains would go away instantly. Add lucky/bad stuff in wheel prize, add items drop (0.005% on any 5* items and 0.006% for 4* items and so on...) make guarantee 10-20 radiant per FSC (aka 5-10 per 27 and 5-10 per 28) add ce to craft sprite food. 5/10/20/40/50 take half the mats to craft, make crafting 1 sprite food gives 5 and there... most of your problem are solved...

I kinda hate the behind the scenes changes too, I decided that SpiralSpy is the best way to go and find what changes are there. In fact, there were new items,

Isn't it obvious for everone? That is kinda... (starts with d end with b, 4 letters) for a dev to say "hey we added something but we won't tell you" most people will try and go find out but that's lame instead of saying:

"yeah we added the skin for the new guns! We haven't forget about gunner update guys, the animation is looking great, only that and that to finish!! Valentine day is right around the corner while you people wait"

DAMAGE CONTROL, Community MANAGER. *sigh*

Edit: the other thing OOO does bad is the P2P model. Instead of having a Heat P2P wall you could have Sprites = P2P? But you could still get it lvl 100 if you are devoted F2P (like back in ye olde days) and people would gain an advantage by buying bundle of CE. Also PROMOTIONAL PACKS is always better than promotional SINGLE ITEMS. With the explorator pack gone they should've marketted another "miner" one... that's just basic game marketing...

/think where can I sign to become OOO lead dev?

These new update are not for our benefit, they are brand new ways for us to spend more time playing. The reason they reduced the drop rates so much is to encourage big spending. There are numerous old players hoarding unreasonable amounts of CE. They want it back. Any new players will quickly realize the only way to get what they want(without spending months worth of time) is to pay for it with real money. ALL THREE RINGS WANTS IS MONEY. What else could you expect from them?

2 cents =/= much

i think...OOO put out a finite game, which started as F2P and was kind of just a 'run-through enjoy this adventure and story for what it is and what it's worth' type game. i don't think they foresaw the fan base that would accumulate or the expectations that arise from having a fan base. the expectations being that people wanted more...more of this creative, animated, fluid world that they found. while the truth was, it was just a story, unfinished in its own right, meant to be left hanging...forever open to the player's own imaginative conclusions.

...which is too bad, because SK is beautifully rendered and has some nice unique artwork within it, as well as having fun weapons, and would be awesome for just finding more and more different levels and different types of monsters to slay each time you logged on. to be great, all they'd have to do is keep making more levels and monsters, not more story and not more flashy accessories...but alas, i don't think OOO has ever understood this(nor wanted anything more than to just present their story and adventure). i played for like 3 years now....and i still don't really care that much about the story, that's just not my gaming thing...stories...i just like to login and kill cool stuff. what happens to most folk, who like to kill, when they run out of cool stuff to kill? ....they go somewhere and find more cool stuff to kill.

anyway, my 2 cents...probably not worth alot, just an anonymous observation from a sniper among the stars....who still finds some things in SK within his crosshairs.

...but don't ever forget, it is a good story and adventure....and definately one worth experiencing....especially for free.

There are two issues with this thread.

First, OOO isn't our friend or our provider or any of that, they are just another business... the "free to play" thing is just a ploy to get us to buy into their game and presumably a means of justifying giving us all their game for free such that they can make an awesome experience for everyone. The society that we (unless you're a communist :P) live in determines that they are to be judged based on how much money they make and nothing else.

Second, people complain to them because they assume that OOO doesn't want to just make money off the players and play god, but that they want to actually produce something that they want to see out there. The complainers want to see OOO make something beautiful for everyone to enjoy, and have found several usually not bad reasons why what OOO has produced/not produced/changed is lacking. i.e. usually massive imbalance, lag, lack of content, poor community management and slow/poorly planned development time.

Explain to me where this "(un)grateful" business comes in.

The grateful part is that they don't charge us for any 'major' updates. Just imagine if they release DLC from now on. Gunner Update is a DLC, Tortodone update is a DLC, Arcade Redux is a DLC. What if OOO wanted to make the pet update a DLC? All charging us a small fee.

We should be grateful that the game is 'actually' free to play. I don't know how much OOO make every month but seriously the amount of time, effort and money, that does go into the updates must be a lot. Be happy at least for that, I know I am.

Why should I care whether OOO charges me money for things? If they expect me to play their game then it had better be free or incredible+cheap. If it isn't, then I'm going to watch a lets look at of it and in all likelihood never watch a lets play of it, or come close to buying it.

But OOO's game IS free and I HAVE given them money for it. All of the sudden, their work has received more money from me than any of the hundred-two hundred steam releases that I've watched go by. Good for them, their game is justified in its existence regardless of what it is now that I have given them money for it. I don't have to be grateful to do this.

Notice how me looking up to them thanking them for their tremendous contribution to my entertainment wasn't part of that. This is how it works. They are just another company, and I am going to judge them for all that they are worth just like all the other companies out there.

This isn't just me, this is how most people are going to see the game before getting involved with it. They aren't even doing this because it was their grand idea. Other companies, mobile development etcetera have paved the way for them and they're just following trends.
