I'm a 3* knight and I was wondering if I need Radiant Fire Crystals?
I'm working on my 4* sword, but every time I read the forums everyone says they are hard to get.
Do I really need them to finish the game?

Not yet, but you will. You need Radiant Fire Crystals to heat 5-star gear --- about 450 total per item. They are currently very hard to find. A run of Firestorm Citadel earns you about 3 (sometimes 6, sometimes more, sometimes 0). A pack of 50 costs 700 energy. So, even if you spend real money, you have to spend a lot of it to heat your items. A lot of us are hoping that Three Rings will resolve the situation, possibly by adding new content where it's easier to find Radiants.
In the meantime, you can pretty much finish the game with only 4-star gear, although it's harder than with heated 5-star gear. Don't hesitate to upgrade your armor to 5 stars; armor doesn't benefit much from heat. But don't upgrade your 4-star weapons to 5 stars until you have enough radiants to heat them to at least heat level 5, and maybe even heat level 8. Only then does the unheated 5-star damage catch up with the heated 4-star damage.

You won't need them to complete the game, but if you want stronger 5-star equipment then you will need them. However, you're only 3-star right now, there's a strong chance radiants will get fixed by the time you make your first 5-star set.

Tier 3 is plenty doable in 4
Tier 3 is plenty doable in 4 star gear, hell, I'll go ahead and say that staying in 4 star gear will actually make the game more enjoyable for you because you don't get access to the overpowered perks. 5 star gear is "needed" only for shadow lairs and danger missions. But now that lifts are free and we get a free revive for each floor you might try them as much as you want, danger missions that is and shadow lairs are largely optional.
If you play the game to "be the very best" then I'm afraid you will quit very soon, if you are in for enjoyment, you will stay for long. Best to take things at your own pace.

Not to mention Heart of Ice, Compound 42, and other places that are harder than FSC for many players. Heck, in the old days, when players influenced gate construction, there would be complaints on the forums whenever a fiend stratum was placed before FSC.

How exactly do you complete a MMORPG like SK?
Yes you need radiant fire crystals if you want 5* gear but don't bother getting it as it won't help you in any way. There is no end game past FSC and you will never be able to heat your gear due to OOO making radiants paying players only. Have fun!
