Could we have a ticket system for weapon customization that works like so?:
- First select the weapon you wish to modify on the right menu.
- Choose a weapon skin you wish to apply to the weapon on the left menu.
- Adjust tweakables such as color and dimensions (if applicable) for the chosen weapon skin.
- Preview what your weapon will look like, overview the cost (probably energy) and confirm the purchase.

With this system, you keep your weapon with all its heat and UVs.
OOO gets another beloved energy sink that maybe wont piss off everyone.
Some weapon mods can require tokens which are only available from certain events or offers if that is desirable.

Judging from the model complexity of the average SK weapon, somebody that knows what they are doing could be putting out new weapon skins on a weekly basis. Skins wouldn't just be retextures either, but completely different models that at least fit the gist of the weapon its applied to.
Also something that could be applied to shields.

I feel like this could possibly ruin the acute degree of uniqueness and flavor that is a result of the way that the gear system is in the game.

Step 1: obtain Glacius
Step 2: reskin it to look like Combuster
Step 3: turn off full inspect
Step 4: become a God

Wouldn't work that way

It wouldn't work like that Dibs, every weapon would have its own set of refits.
Same to you Michaelb, the weapons would still more or less keep their flavor, but they would have some variation to it. Like imagine some differently shaped leviathan blades, or different canister configurations and shapes for an alchemer.

Can we reskin a Sudaruska to be Arkus' Leviathan Blade?

Because he uses Suda's moveset.

But in all seriousness, I'm going to say -1. From what I'm getting you're just asking to add useless reskins into the game (like Scissor Blades). While it could be a good crown-sink, I'd rather they work on something that's actually useful than a bunch of useless reskins that players may-or-may-not even use anyway.

Dibsville, who says that this would need to override more important things? Of course things that actually add REAL content to the game would be preferable, but giving players the option to customize their weapons and shields, perhaps so they fit their gear better would hopefully bring in a bit of income.

And yeah Mystrian, Steam Workshop support would be great, OOO could have weapon skin contests, and perhaps even work out a deal where the model makers get a percentage of profits made on their item, it would be a good incentive to create content for the game.

alternatives

This doesn't have to be done precisely as I suggest it it, there's any number of different ways and restrictions that could be applied.

The only thing I think is a bad idea is making entirely different weapons with the same exact stats as normal ones which must then be leveled up and UV'd

In the game's files, the canisters aren't seperate parts of the alchemers. They're actually attached to them, so it would be difficult to move around the canisters. Unless they were to change it so that the cans are seperate models, but that's unlikely.

In theory, this thread's title is misleading.
In 3D, a 'skin' is the texture file(s) that are imposed on the model.
This is suggesting, as I'm taking it, modified models for each weapon/shield?
Honestly, all I really want are prismatic Swiftstrikes. Yellow-green doesn't go with very many armors/accessories in the game.

In theory, this thread's title is misleading.

Except that it isn't. "Skin" is a commonly used game term that refers to an object (or character) appearing different despite having the same (or very similar) function. The 3D model can be completely changed, but as long as the function remains the same, it's called a "skin".

The "skin" you're talking about (the actual word is "skinning", the process of applying a texture to the surface of a model) is pretty much always called a "texture", because that's what it is.

If you happen to know more than me in the genre of 3D modelling terminology and can state with confidence that the above sentence is false, then you are then speaking about a subject that exceeds the regular "common knowledge", and it should not replace the "common knowledge" since it's more of a trivial piece of information rather than being practical enough to overwrite a more frequently used term.
