Ok here's what i have right now:
Helm: I have a magic hood and a guslinger hat
Armor: Brute jelly armor and magic cloak.
I have the recipe for the gunslinger sash so should i make that or use what i have to get to 5* and then do that, or get an upgrade for the magic set and if so which one should i get?
First 5* armor for a pure gunner

I'm a pure gunner.
I use Nova Driver ASI med, Blitzneedle ASI med, Sentenza ASI med, Polaris ASI med.
Chaos set is the best. You get MAX damage with an extra trinket, MAX charge time reduction as well. I have asi uvs so using swift strike buckler I get V.HIGH asi. If you know how to dodge and shield bump effectively, this set is the best in game.
if you're still doing rjp then make the gunslinger sash, it'll help you more than upgrading the brute jelly will
Also you can make shadowsun slicker with it, by the time you get to 5*, shadow defense is more important than the other two since the other enemy types are easier.
But once you get better gear you might want to gravitate towards a chaos set. Or dvine cowl if you feel you really need the extra defense. But you could just leave that magic set as 4* until you're ready to make a decision.
