As a new Knight, how can I avoid stepping on the toes of other players?

I'm a new player to Spiral Knights, but an experienced gamer. I've been playing for a few days, mostly in the Clockworks and my Rank Missions, always on Elite, currently working on building a 4* set. Playing with others is more fun and rewarding, but even though I'm skilled enough to hold my own and not be a burden to the team, I'm still new to the community and culture here, so I don't want to annoy experienced players or give them reason to kick me.

I've learned a few things looking over this forum, mostly the pet peeves thread. Don't beg, don't ask for constant revives, don't wait to revive until after the battle is over. Using the Pulsar line and shield-bumping can knock enemies out of the range of my allies. Co-ordinate against Trojans, don't release frozen enemies with a weak attack, and don't grab blue/green minerals if there's others available. Research and wear the proper gear before joining an FSC run.

Any other tips or suggestions I should know?

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I've been playing the game since the start and most long time players like can solo pretty much anything, so if they are playiing in a party, it's to be helpful or just enjoy some company and not because they need the help.

Most players won't care if you are relaitvely underpowerd as long as you fight actively and don't wander around far behind in a mission.

Try not to shoot a fire box when someone is walking by or do other things to cause damamge to a party member.

Although getting kicked form a party is annoying, it's ultimately better than playing with the kind of jerks who kick people for petty reasons.

If you want to join a mentoring guild, we'd be happy to help you through rank missions and give you tips and invites. Just send me an in-game mail.

You've pretty much covered everything, one other thing is to unfreeze people them they're frozen. Just attack them and they'll unfreeze.

I think you covered all the basics

I think in general its important to be considerate and just have fun. What you listed above is pretty much accurate, but I think as long as you have fun and talk to the people around you, you'll see that SK is enjoyable and you'll make a lot of friends. Also if you don't have one yet, try to find a guild, they make the SK experience all the more better since they can be people you rely on and talk to. And as long as you take that into consideration, you'll be all set. :p

@Aesn: I'm always peeved when people forget to unfreeze others because they ignore the dangers that freezed knights are in when they can't move >_<, so that's a good point as well

It can be hard sometimes

Different people will prefer different playstyles. If you can pick out targets that other players are not attacking with a pulsar and corner them so that they either die to the pulsar or the swordie can swoop in and kill it, then you're doing a great help to your team! Doing so might be difficult however.

A few other things that I'll point out:

  • Tell others about mineral/treasure box locations when you scout ahead/down a separate path. It saves time running back and forth.
  • Be aware of who's fighting what. A bomber is likely fighting the enemies in a certain radius of themself (unless they are using a mist bomb, in which case you should run in and take care of the targets), a gunner is going to be standing back a distance picking off targets, and swordies will be taking on single enemies or small, grouped crowds. Fall in line with these people and you'll make your loadout count!
  • Anything with knockback is useful and dangerous. Calibur-line charge-attack knockback can save or kill your teammates. Be aware of your surroundings before using knockback!
  • Apologize! We all make mistakes, and if you accidentally cause the death or damage to another player, simply saying you're sorry can make a minute but very strong difference.
  • Avoid damage! Your shield is your best friend, and people will often forget about it. The dodge function is also very useful.
  • Pick up sprite food minerals for people in your party's sprites. If all the minerals are red and purple, and you have a Seraphynx but a teammate has a Drakon, then prioritize that crimsonite over the dark matter, even if the darker mineral is bigger.

I think that should help get you on the right track! This might be a good thread to put into the "new recruits" section of the forums. Have fun!

It annoys me when players

It annoys me when players won't get on the pad.
They stand there typing or looking around when everyone else is ready to go.
Don't do that.

Hey there!

Here's some other tips I can (And likely should) give you.

If you join a boss run late, you'll get less tokens.

Normal Damage is strong to nothing and weak to nothing - If you cannot accurately guess an opponent's weakness, either use Normal Damage of Auto-Aim on them to find their weaknesses.

Vanaduke's Mask is strong against everything, except, you guessed it, normal damage!

Fiends can only reliably target you if you stop moving or move in the straight line. Strafing, therefore, is the best means of evading their annoying as heck "THROW OFFICE SUPPLIES ALL THE TIME!" attack.

Do a barrel roll!

Cheese for you

Welcome to this game. I see that you mostly have everything down when it comes to party etiquette, which is good. I offer two tips.

- This one is for the forums btw. Click on Forum Preferences (diagonally below from the wiki button) and you can have a forum picture on your own. But you can only choose from the list of pictures.

-Play at your own pace. There is no need to rush just so you can reach the endgame. The endgame isn't really that great anyways .Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

And also have fun. That is the reason why you joined this game right? Would be a shame to play and not enjoy the experience.

Toes?

It's pretty hard to step on other knights' toes -- we have such tiny feet!

- Do NOT beg for stuff. - If

- Do NOT beg for stuff.
- If you need help, ask for it. A lot of the older players are more than willing to help newer players. Myself included if I'm not busy at the time.
- Trade chat is not on by default, to turn it on put "/join 2" or "/join trade" into chat.
- Going in a group is a lot more fun than solo, most of the time. Joining a good guild is an easy way of making sure you always have people you get along with to go with. Some of the bigger guilds are more selective, some to make sure that the players mesh decently, some for other reasons.
- Auto-aim can be useful, but being able to aim without it is much more useful. It allows you to hammer dash past enemies while still hitting them, aim Alchemers so a lot of the ricochets hit the target you're aiming at, and various other things.
- Learn to shield bump, it is an incredibly useful tool. :)
- Shield bash and dash are not keyed by default (I think). Find a spot for them. You may also wish to customize your controls, most people do to a point.

But the two most important things...
- You will NOT be able to please everybody, no matter what you do. Some people just want to be pissed at somebody, and they don't care what the reason is, it is just an excuse to be pissed. You could do a perfect run, not die at all, pull your weight fantastically... and they'll still not be happy because you did something minor they found amazingly bad. You will piss off some people by putting the same line in your subject line (when responding) or making a "signature" on posts. /ignore is your friend in those cases.

- Have fun, it is a game. It is not worth taking too seriously. Find people you like to chat with, have fun in the game, do what you find fun as long as it doesn't ruin others fun.

Thanks. Shield bash and dash

Thanks. Shield bash and dash are, by default, on left shift + right/left click. I had Auto-Aim off when I first played, and I can see having it off helps in shooting (I'm a gunslinger) multiple enemies at once by aiming between them, and with targetting menders/silkwings, but faster enemies like Devilite Overtimers are more difficult to fight without Auto-Aim.

I actually use an SNES controller with USB adapter to play, using my trackpad to aim. It's... pretty unorthodox, but it works for me.

Attacking with a sword stops movement for a second (more or less) allowing enemies to attack. You can use the to your advantage (when the enemy is aggroed on you) ex.:

  1. trojan aggros you
  2. attack then immediatly go into a shield cancel (hit defend after one attack)
  3. trojan attacks
  4. while its attacking circle behind it

this method can be done with just about any enemy.

Yawn.

I see other people are doing pretty good job answering your questions, so I will just go by answering the title.

Knights of the Spiral Order actually belong to the species named Nendoroids, who have small bodies in comparison to their heads. They also have really small feet and toes, it is so that the footwear they use make it seem as their feet are mere extensions of their legs, and most of them actually leave you no room to step on their toes. It is quite hard to step on such a small toe with such a small feet, add the fact that your feet is more likely to slide off theirs than actually pressing on them. Even if you get close enough, your heads will probably collide before it happens, so if you are still worried, you can take it as a warning.

TL;DR: No need to worry about stepping on other knights'/players' toes at all.

I like it when people invite

I like it when people invite me to their boss runs, their promo missions, and just for boxes or danger rooms.

If they're noobs at the boss runs though, then I get pretty annoyed quickly.
