Been hearing various things about the game switching to open beta in a few weeks? Is this true, also, what will happen to our CE, characters etc.

I would doubt anything unless the Devs confirm it.

I have heard these rumors as well, though I would doubt anything unless the Devs confirm it. If the game is making a public transition, in to something like a Beta or another Preview Event, then my guess is that everything will be wiped except for accounts and all real-money-purchased CE on them. There is the 25% extra CE bonus, but from what I've seen and heard, this is only for the Official Launch.

The developers have promised

The developers have promised a full wipe at the end of the preview. Anyone who has purchased CE with real money will be granted all that CE again, along with 25% more (I am too lazy to cite my sources, but they should be on these forums somewhere).

As for the beta rumors, I suspect that Cleaver's blog may have something to do with it... http://thefloggingwillcontinue.com/

If you assume "very shiny new

If you assume "very shiny new MMO" is Sprial Kights then please take into account how the words close to launch don't always mean too much in tangible time (see Valve Time). No timeline other than "finally getting close" is stated. This is the third preview event, the first being all the way back in spring '08.

Also, "Move to open beta" is entirely your words. You may have noticed but the standard notation of Alpha/Beta/Gold/Released hasn't been followed and I highly doubt there will ever be a self labeled "beta" event. Dev's have stated in the past that they explicitly avoid this terminology and hence "Preview Event" instead.

I'm not saying that we should

I'm not saying that we should expect a Beta on January 2nd, but I was just pointing out that the blog is the kind of thing that would start rumors.

The full text of the section

The full text of the section about this game reads as follows (emphasis added):

For Three Rings it has also been a good year and I’m very proud of our team. We worked on some Facebook games, an iPad version of Corpse Craft, a couple of projects with partners that I can’t talk about yet, Puzzle Pirates (of course), and a very shiny new MMO that, after many years of development, is finally getting close to launch. Look for a post on that early in the New Year.

That said, bear in mind that:

1. Cleaver doesn't seem to follow the "release before it's ready" mentality, and,
2. Almost EVERY post in that blog contains an apology for not posting when he said he would; the posting frequency seems to be roughly 2-3 posts/year, and dropping.
3. He appears to be suffering from baby hypnosis; a MUCH more interesting diversion than any blog.

Ross is the eternal villain.

Didn't any of you guys get invited to Spirak Knights?
It's going Open Beta after 255 years in development.

Also, soon, in game development terms, could be anywhere up to 13 years.
So don't expect it going open beta tomorrow.

But if it went Open Beta on my birthday, that would be pretty sweet.

I don't mind stuff being

I don't mind stuff being wiped on Open Beta like our progress, items, equips, minerals, materials etc.
I don't mind about about our crwosn going.

But, if we don't get our CE we PURCHASED. As in, using Paypal/Card, then I'm making a complaint.
Yes, I've used one batch I had bought already. Another batch I've just bought.

What if, we went opne Beta tomorrow?
I'd start with only 25% I bought? That's not very fair.

I spent hard earned cash on yuor game, Three Rings, it's only fair to give me my content for that.

25% more. 125% total.

25% more. 125% total.

I had always understood that the server wipe would happen at *launch*, not open beta. There are still flaws and inconsistencies in balancing, item tooltip bonus descriptions, stat bars, etc- wiping out all our recipes and crowns will add several weeks to the time when serious beta testers can even think about trying to craft and check that again. (especially since the "official" nature of the launch would mean that we couldn't expect to resell energy and get it back later)

So, I hope the wipe would happen at launch, not during the beta. It really depends on whether OOO is pursuing the beta as a business, or a way to distribute the effort of testing.

This game will soon be open to people worldwide.
We are still fixing bugs and trying to add more shops, weapons, armors and all kinds of other stuff!
We will try to work as fast as we can.
Then this game is ready on the go!
But We are working as fast as we can.
there are still many bugs to fix as the beta testers reported.
Still a few things to do though.
It wont take that long.
Our bet it that this game is going to come out around 2-6 weeks.(maybe less maybe more no one really knows)
I will post again as soon as this game gets to its final stages.
Sorry to keep all of you guys waiting for so long.

This is maybe what started the rumors :D that was posted 3weeks ago.

What a goober. Also, I'm nosey.

Do you happen to have a link to that thread, samuraii? I can't tell if he's an excited tester who likes using the royal we, or if he really is posing as a dev.

The game still seems fairly

The game still seems fairly unfinished. They haven't even completed the east side of haven and the core. Also I would think (or at least hope) that they're still in the process of balancing equipment (*cough* khorovod is too weak *cough*).

The site in question where

The site in question where "Tony/Admin_tony" is posting this stuff is http://www.freebrowsergamer.com/2010/01/spiral-knight.html , in the comments (being wrong)...

6 weeks ago: Tony
I'm an administrator and Im proud to announce that the game will be open in 1 week to 2 weeks!
Contact me if there is any questions. You wont need to download anything and giving some people free tests.

I'm not even sure there's a job called "administrator" that'd make sense in this context anyway.

"I can tell you that as far as I know, there is nobody named Tony that works for Three Rings."
Are you sure there aren't any lost insane devs roaming the basement in the dark of the night, going online, stating made-up dates? :D

I'm confident that OOO wouldn't hire someone who can't handle basic grammar and punctuation, or who would post a crappy release announcement on a relatively obscure website before Cleaver got to cut the ribbon and fling confetti.

You've obviously never sent an OM petition to Eurydice. ;)

But seriously, folks. His username on the linked site goes to this site: http://intensedebate.com/people/Admin_Tony

...where his profile box lists him as a "spiral knights admin" (making the claim more specific). Sounds like it might be a good idea to watch out for scammers.

No idea who Tony is

Yeah, that guy is not affiliated with Three Rings. Don't listen to him.

In fact, I wouldn't believe anybody purporting to speak from a position of authority unless they're in the official Three Rings guild, in-game. Even be skeptical of things you hear on these forums, until we have some way to more clearly designate who Developers and Game Masters are.
