Wasted grinding?

I'm new, and I'm enjoying the game thus far. I enjoy doing Rank Missions the most, since that's Story Mode basically, and it gives me a sense of progression, completion, and accomplishment.

I've spent a very fair portion of the time I've been in this game grinding the Royal Jelly Palace, however, so that I can build up the star sets needed to progress past the Hall of Heroes missions... It's definitely been fun, and I've been playing with a close friend of mine, but I really would rather not grind.

However, I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the system. I first wanted to aim towards the Gunslinger set, but then I saw the armour that protected against Piercing and Elemental and chose to go with that instead. Upon building that up to 3*, I learned that I made myself completely defenceless against Normal damage, and so focusing on having actual defence (given I was at the point in the game where I could no longer just avoid every single attack), I moved to the Normal/Piercing armours that the game gives you recipes for via rank mission, the Cobalt set. Upon building those up to 4*..... now I see that the Gunslinger set already has exactly that, Normal/Piercing defence, almost exactly the same amount of defence but with handgun bonuses, which is important to be as a gun user.

I'm getting tired of spending all this time doing research to figure out what I want beforehand so I don't waste immense time and effort building up towards the wrong thing. I do it because my experience in TF2, for example, has shown me that research is important when approaching systems that involve value, time, and irreversible process, so that you don't mess up because you're new (e.g. learning how to trade, what items are valuable, and so on, so that you don't end up getting sharked out of $100+ Unusual hats). However, being new to Spiral Knights, I didn't quite have a full grasp of the whole system that is equipment, heat, alchemy, materials, energy, and so on. Thus, for all the research that I did to avoid wasting immense time and effort, I discover that I've wasted immense time and effort building the wrong gear because of a few misunderstandings.

I'm sorry for the rant, I'm just terribly frustrated. I *really* don't want to pay money in a F2P game for content that I can get without paying money, but I'm equally frustrated that all the grinding I did to *avoid* paying money in the first place is useless. Is this salvageable at all? Is it worth grinding and grinding more to get the 1800 energy (126000 crowns, or approximately 15-20 Tier 2 Clockwork RJP runs) to unbind the Mighty Cobalt Helm, pray I can actually sell the blasted thing for more than 126kcr in the first place and maybe a bit more to make up for it all, and then unbind the Mighty Cobalt Armour with that money and selling that too? Who would even pay that much for those items when there's alternatives that are better, the very reason I'm trying to sell it?

if you don't want to pay then don't

Nobody is forcing you. And honestly, there's no shortcuts in a game (and real life). Also dying (even losing your emergency rev) makes you lose some money. So don't die a lot.

EDIT: or yeah you can just sell bound stuff to vendors. (prices vary depending on star lvl. you are trying to sell.

do not unbind

Do not unbind that Cobalt armor. No one will buy it. Just get some better armor and sell your Cobalt stuff to a vendor (which doesn't require unbinding, and as others have suggested).

I'm sorry that you've made some bad equipment choices that have wasted some of your effort. If you're not too tired of research, do you want some help in planning your equipment? You could pose questions in this thread, for us to answer. Also, have you read the Gunslinger Guide on the wiki? It's okay, but not great.

Egh, thanks.. I *think* I know the stuff I want now, but I'm not sure if it's possible for me to craft an Obsidian Carbine though, since I can't find the ingredients on the Auction House. Didn't realise it was a limited event item, but it's functionally equivalent to the Sentenza at least..

it's similar

Yes, Obsidian Carbine is similar to (although not identical to) Sentenza. I would go for Umbra Driver instead, but Sentenza and Obsidian are okay.

I tried that series, but I really didn't like the two-shot clip, and it feels like wasted damage since the ricochet bullet often doesn't hit anything unless you've got a million mini-monsters around

Actually, with skill, you can make the ricochet and original shot both hit the same monster.

right

For novice players without much skill, alchemers do less damage than guns such as Argent/Sentenza. For expert players who know how to land the ricochets, alchemers do more damage than guns such as Argent/Sentenza, even against single targets. You aren't an expert yet, but someday you will be, and you will find Argent/Sentenza weak and boring. Alchemers are stronger and, because they reward skill, much more satisfying.

That said, you can still kill things with Sentenza, so go ahead. It's not anything like useless or bad.

You can actually aim the ricochet? Shooting it against a wall without moving causes the ricochet to bounce in random, different directions, which implied that you couldn't aim it. Best I could do with it was try to shoot inside of a group of monsters rather than hitting the front liners.

yes

You might try searching Google for something like "alchemer ricochet site:forums.spiralknights.com". You will see many threads about how to use these guns. Here is the short version.

Regular attacks: One ricochet occurs in a random direction, but not totally random. The ricochet direction is always "counterclockwise" from the firing direction. For example, if you fire north, then the ricochet goes west. If you fire west, then the ricochet goes south. Once you know this, you can aim at the side of a monster, so that the ricochet goes into the monster. For example, if the monster is north of you, then aim your shot at its east side; the ricochet goes west, into the monster. You just doubled your damage output.

Charge attacks: Ricochets bounce in both directions --- counterclockwise and clockwise --- and the direction is not random. Each ricochet ricochets again, for huge total damage. For example, if you land a Nova Driver charge between two (healthy) lumbers, then you can kill both of them in one shot.

gunner update

The developers have announced a "gunner update", which will introduce a range of new guns and armor. We don't know when it will arrive, but it's been promised for months, so I would guess that it will arrive in the next couple of months. Some players are waiting for this update, before they commit to any particular gunner plan.

That said, you don't want to wait around forever; you want to play and have fun, right? My suggestion is to try a variety of guns, to see which ones you like best. Try Autogun (someday you will want Blitz Needle), an alchemer (powerful but not super-easy), Antigua (weaker but very easy), Catalyzer (very different), Pulsar (lots of knock back), etc. Just keep in mind that some guns have higher learning curves than others, as I've already explained.

For shield, get Swiftstrike Buckler soon, and think about more defensive shields later. For armor, work toward either Shadowsun or Chaos. If you're free-to-play, then the gunner update may arrive before you complete either of these, and you can adjust your plan.

Yeah... After trying out the Alchemer again, Auto-Target off... I can definitely see the potential for this item.
