Ive heard performance is worse for steam users. I'd try anything within reason to fix my only true complaint with the game. I don't want to abandon steam completely, its the easiest way to buy CE, and sometimes I do that. I just want a way to log in without using steam always.
let us unlink our account from steam.

The only aspect of that I've heard is the steam ingame overlay. Disable that for this game and the performance should be the same. If you don't know how to disable it, I believe google can help.
there is no way to unbind from steam. if you merged accounts, the agreement was along the lines of "if you do this, you can never go back". there have been some cases, but only if you couldn't play because there is no steam SK on linux.
