Everyone knows they fell onto the planet from their spaceship (the Skylark), but where did the Skylark come from? Is there a Spiral Knight planet full of Spiral Knights? Who were the first Spiral Knights to colonize this new planet? Who built the Clockworks?

As of right now this game doesn't have much lore and I'd like to hear other peoples questions and theories for all these unexplained things.

I was just writing a topic on all these poltholes.

Question: Why on Earth... er, Why on Cradle is Basil the only Stranger in the Clockworks?
Theory 1: Basil is the leader of the Strangers
Reasons:
A) We never see any other Stranger in the Clockworks. The Clockworks are dangerous. Kings generally have military experience and wisdom. At the least, Basil is therefore the strongest Stranger. Strong or wise members of the tribe are usually the leader.
B) Why does he have recipes that no one else does? Could it be that he has the raw awesome (another leadership trait) to test them out himself?
C) The wiki lists him as the only notable Stranger. The wiki also lists King watsit of the Gremlins as the only notable single Gremlin.

Theory 2: They are all projections of one, Greater Basil locked at the Core (credit to Kathoric)
Reasons: Dunno, ask him.

Question 2:Where did the Knights come from?
Theory 1: They are a Stranger construct involving Snipes devised by Basil to defeat the longtime enemies of the Strangers, the Gremlins.
Reasons:
A) The Strangers look fairly robotic and therefore must know how to make robots. The ME lore mentions the SK's "Power Suit". The SKs could easily be Snipes in an Iron Man-type suit (would explain the health system)
B) The Strangers look a bit too helpful. Also, the pods land oddly close to Haven.
C) When first entering Haven, you are reassured by your superior that the Strangers must be friendly, the odd little birds seem to like this (of course, they could be something similar to pilot fish)
D) The Snipes are scared of Knights more than they are of Strangers. Seeing your friends turned into machines would do that to them.

Theory 2: They are a rebel/seceding/no friends in high places group running from something.
Reasons:
A) Yes, the Skylark crashed due to core malfunction, and there's nothing anyone could do about it, but why wasn't there a rescue team? A search dog? Some messages in bottles?
B) They never mention anything outside the Spiral Order. Are they hiding something?
C) They never attempted to phone home. Ever.

Theory 3: They are the Kights Templar. IN SPACE.
Reasons:
A) They are fighting through hostile territory on behalf of their government in order to reach an artifact of great power (Holy Grail, much?). And they're knights.
B) Spiral ORDER. As in, order of monks?

When a mommy knight and a daddy knight love each other very much...

we are here because boswick

we are here because boswick was driving the mothership one day, and blackhat came along and giving him bad luck. the story ended when boswick lent on the escape pod controls, forcing knights to crash onto cradle.

also at point A, there used to be strangers in the middle of levels, who would sell all the rare items (first previews) or early last preview; normal recipes.
but they were discontinued for some reason...

and i'm assuming basil has all the recipes because he owns a banstick and the power suit.

as for all your other points good work =p.

@ Ten_Tacles

That sounds an awful lot like the Orks from Warhammer 40k, as they're born from spores and grow up in order to completely destroy everything

@ Mlmiii

These are all really good ideas and theories and I'm glad you're seemingly just as interested in lore as I am. I hope there's a dev in the OOO team whose responsible for the SK lore because we need someone to fill all these empty pages of the empty chapters of the empty book that is currently the Spiral Knights story.

I'd love for the SK lore to be as extensive as the lore in World of Warcraft.

Spiral Knights ... attack and conquer any planets they come by

Then why didn't they do something more productive with their ship, like, say, SHOOP DA WOOP something in the Clockworks?

They don't call home, because they found a new planet to conquer anyway
They mindlessly kill jellies, wolver, gremlins and anything else, the strangers just had luck
They flood the stranger market with crowns and materials, craft their own stuff instead of buying them from the strangers
They want to take the energy from the core to fuel their own ship

Well, they should at least get better autoguns.
Would you have qualms about killing the undead and globs of jelly? Demons? Moths? Robots? Rabid wolves?
The strangers wanted the shinies. The rest isn't their market.
Yes, but we already knew that.

We are here coz...

...one day the Knights were having a party. Boswick, up in the control room, fell asleep on the buttons labeled "Teleport everyone into escape pods and launch them into deep cold soul eating space" and "Self Destruct in 5 minutes". The Core is actually a huge toolkit which we need to fix the Skylark.

No way of communication with home because the Skylark isn't working, duh

A very short post

Throughout the known cosmos, no apparition strikes greater terror into the hearts of mortals than the sardonically christened “Spiral Knights”. Originating as a single entity, eons of biotechnical evolution produced the first knight on a wasteland planet near the universe’s outskirts. From the moment its cognizance and metallic exterior had fully developed, this ruthless automaton proceeded to ravage the already blighted landscape of its homeworld. Hacking and slashing away at the meager traces of foliage nearby, the creature seemed bent on converting its surroundings into raw materials to be used in constructing like-minded brethren. As a preparatory gesture for its soon-to-be-created siblings, it also began crafting weapon-esque appendages capable of seamlessly attaching themselves to organisms with an anatomical and physiological makeup identical to its own. Soon the original knight’s efforts to beget a legion of bloodthirsty troops were more successful than it ever could have fathomed. Able to survey their environment and absorb new information almost instantaneously, nascent drones quickly gained the ability to manufacture functional copies of themselves seconds after completion. Operating as a hive mind, certain knights devoted their energies solely to forging new instruments of destruction in order to meet the needs of their carnage craving compatriots. Eventually, the beings had entirely drained their world of its scant natural resources, leaving behind an abundance of modular war toys and smoldering turf in lieu. However, their savage wanderlust could not be satiated until every last conquerable biosphere lay in ruins. Mere minutes after the “Spiral Knights” obliterated the very landscape which spawned them a new, ominous objective resonated throughout their one-track minds. Following mass immigration to a set of coordinates where all surplus weapons and crafting materials had previously been deposited, the unblinking fiends set to work converting the alloys and other substances into a vessel capable of interplanetary travel which would be deemed the “Skylark” by those grimly reflecting on the atrocities of its makers. Within this grand spacecraft millions of auto-navigating, knight-sized cryochambers were also built and ultimately launched towards distant stars in hopes of expediting universal dispersion. And from a number of these pods emerged the founder “Spiral Knights” who initially established a presence on Cradle.

Contrary to popular belief, the knights are not an unfeeling race. Rather, the environment augments and contorts their capacity for empathy considerably while preserving their mechanic vigor and haphazardly violent nature. A fascinating example of the phenomenon can be seen on Cradle, where the brood specific to this biome appears considerably laxer than its draconian otherworldly counterpart. This is not to say that they’re indolent or unwilling to perform crafting or fighting functions efficiently, just that the urgency to engage in these activities is lessened to a degree. Other planet-specific alterations to the knights’ original design include softer, more humanlike features and a limited degree of autonomy. While the organisms they originated from were solely consumed with wanton devastation and the means to cause it, the Cradle-bound varieties have a plethora of interests including recreational material collection, bartering, and creative expression via donning atypical or vibrant battle gear. As incredulous as it seems, an entire makeshift society has been formed to accommodate these ritualistic practices as well as house individuals recuperating from fierce bouts of combat. Once more, it’s crucial to mention that such quirks do not undo the knights’ core programming, which dictates that they wildly demolish any form of sentient life within the immediate vicinity. Nonetheless, the evident reversal of previously held priorities demonstrated by Cradle’s “Spiral Knight” population illustrates their overall malleability.

Another development unique to Cradle’s knights is their obsession with collecting two specific types of natural resources: minerals and crystal energy. Both are exceedingly abundant and worthless as types of universal currency, yet the first “Spiral Knights” to subjugate the realm were intrigued with them for unknown reasons. To ensure that newly arriving drones from the “Skylark” and the duplicates they intended to churn out shared their fascination, Cradle’s founders commissioned mercantile propaganda machines they dubbed “Strangers” to assail the hive mind with thoughts concerning the inherent worth of both materials. However, due to the massive distance radio waves would have to travel from their world to any other being invaded, only a planet-wide range was feasible for their thought control devices. Thus, from that day onward the knights indigenous to Cradle became lavishly devoted to stockpiling crystal energy and minerals, despite their uselessness. Without a doubt, the impact of the founders’ deviation from their original operatives is still felt today. For instance, a caste system of sorts exists where an unseen oligarchy denies knights the “right” to fight if they fail to possess sufficient quantities of crystal energy. To truly understand the sheer terror of this, one must note that fighting is a biological necessity for knights, akin to eating or drinking. It’s not an exaggeration to claim that a being’s societal worth in Cradle is half based on their talents as a warrior and half on their ability to successfully hoard “CE”, as it is called by many a planetary denizen. While a shortage of “mins” as they are nicknamed will not bar a knight from battle, they are nonetheless treasured because of their alleged ability to alter landscapes in an auspicious manner. However, to date there has been no evidence that minerals are imbued with this supernatural quality.

In conclusion, we must continue to study these barbarous specimens and pray that it isn’t too late to halt their advancement. The fate of the universe hangs in the balance.

Where not that bad at all

Lisen to the sprites in FSC they where called by the nature of the planet to fight ( or whatever they are able to, probably just give us water) vanaduke, so that means where helping the nature of the planet and if the nature of the planet is going against vanaduke its goin also against the clockwork, so the clockwork is probably a mechanical construct that doesnt coexist with the planet itself, of course its not natural and we are investigating to 1st get our way thru and leave asap and 2nd to help the planet, so we have a win win without leaving us as badasses in this story ;P

Yeah we are using minerals, yeah we r killing every kind of beeing inside the clockwork but yeah its inside the clockworks so its not a part of the real planet its all just constructed ( only the way to the rescue camp were killing some poor Chromalisk babys :´/ ).

The Clockwork istn a natural part of the planet its a construct that just was build and now that we know that the planet itself called some forces to go against we should know that it is destiny that we strandet here to help the planet gain peace and harmony again x)

Glad you liked it. Maybe once threads decrying the evils of OOO stop flooding the first page I'll write some on the social functions of snipes, the clockworks, and how Cradle's native fauna has reacted to the invasion.

Spiral Knights are from another planet
Probably so.
Our ship stopped working above the planet, and we had to use escape pods
Or did we? Those pods look oddly similar to cave entrances/robot-building things from Sonic Adventure.
We land on the planet at seperate times, and help each other reach haven
See above.
Gremlins and Strangers are the 2 most intelligent species on the planet
What of Vanaduke? And since you said "on", and not from, what of the Spiral Knights ('cuz, well, space travel)
Gremlins build deep within the planet, Strangers mine CE and sell valuables to Knights
Established in-game.
We are energy beings(look closely at your character)
I really like this idea, so I'm not going to argue.
We require power suits for protection, because we are made of energy
...What can harm energy beings? Oh, right. Ghosts and such. Fair enough.
We initially delve into the clockworks, and are attacked by the inhabitants. We see this as evil and threatening when they are protecting their land
One word: Wasps. Does defending their territory make them any less evil?
We set out to reach the core hoping to unlock secrets and make our way back home
Or something like that.
No way of communication with home because the Skylark isn't working, duh
So when your 18-wheeler's engine breaks down, your radio suddenly dies as well? Couldn't we rig the machinery to be CE-compatible?

@JoshMK: Win. Epic win.
