so... has anyone else noticed that it takes OOO months to put out content that single modders put out in weeks? i cant be the only guy that notices that right? like, i love tortodrones, but it took them at least 2-3 months of work to retexture an already exsisting model, make a single mission, and make 3 shields, i know there is other coding thing behind the scenes to add this to the game but ive seen more effecient work from single, unpaid, modders...
so... why dont they put together some modding tools for the community and curate the workshop themselves?
Pros (for OOO):
-lower cost for production after modding tools release, while being able to pull revenue from workshop items.
-greater community engagement, keeping players for longer
Pros (for SK players):
-more content
-wider variety content
-some say in what content it produced.
-a potential source of small income for the talented members of the community.
Cons:
-Would take time and resources to make a functioning set of modding tools.
-Would make their current modlers and texture artist less valuable, and them being shifted to a different project or worse let go entirely
-could potentially interfere with SK lore and the currently unfinished story.
if you can think of any more pros/cons let me know.
About the cons...
1: while, yes, creating a full suite of modding tools would be a huge undertaking it isnt the starting point. you could just start by releasing the models and textures to modders, no tools required. Workshop submitters could then begin crafting new armors, weapons, furniture and the community can vote on thier favorites, and OOO get to decide what gets new stats and what gets treated as cosmetic. and if that is successful they could later add more items and tools for modders (IE: arcade floors, music, animations, monsters, AI etc)
2: lets be honest, they arent doing much as is. but i do feel for them.
3: again Spiral knights has been out for almost 3 years, and the last piece of story added was the shadow lairs over a year ago, i dont hold much hope for ever seeing the core.
1 suggestion subforum. it exists, use it.
2 we have already discussed this idea. it's great because of the things you mentione, but the biggest con of connecting with steam is that not everybody has steam connected with SK.
