Yes it does. It can be either

Yes it does. It can be either upgraded to Faust which further upgrades to Gran Faust or Avenger which further upgrades to Divine Avenger.
The Faust line deals shadow and normal damage and can cause curse to enemies (normal or charged) and on yourself (charged). The Avenger line deals elemental and normal damage without added effects.

It is a bummer when you upgrade stuff with neat effects into stuff with entirely different stats.
