NOTE: This is NOT a suggestion. This is a discussion of the possibility of getting Spiral Knights on the PS4. Hence that is why it is General Discussion.

There are many things to consider on this matter. Firstly: Will Sony allow Spiral Knights to move onto consoles?

I think yes. There are already over 1,000 devs slated to release games on the PS4. (Source: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/03/28/more-than-1000-devs-licensed-to-s... ). Also, Spiral Knights is a very unique game, which could increase the chances of getting it onto the consoles.

Secondly: The programming. Spiral Knights is written in Java. Now I'll say it: I know next to nothing about programming or programming languages. So it would be nice if someone with some programming experience/knowledge could provide some insight.

Third: Hardware. Can the PS4 run SK efficiently? Well my crappy PC can so I guess the PS4 can too.

Fourth: Is it worth it? Even if Sony gives permission to put it on PS4, and the programming allows it, and that there are (relatively) low hardware issues, is it worth it to put SK on the PS4? Sure, valuable dev time would be taken up. I'm just gonna leave it open for debate.

My boyfriend and I are

My boyfriend and I are planning to get a PS4 for Warframe and because we heard there's going to be a SAO game for it as well. If Spiral Knights was also on the PS4, that would be great since I already use a controller half the time for SK anyway.

@Hollows

I should add, you can play SK with a DS4 by using DS4 tool. I do it myself and it's like playing with an Xbox 360 controller but eleventyone times better.

Note on Java:

As far as I know, consoles don't support Java. From discussions of this matter in the past, this is one of the things brought up. The PS4 might have changed that and I wouldn't know because I don't follow consoles.

Another thing to think about is the server. Would players connect to the same server? Would they use their Steam logins if they use Steam? (I know the PS3 had some sort of Steam integration with Portal 2, so that's definitely possible)

In the end, we should be asking if people on the PS4 are going to be paying enough money for Three Rings to even attempt such a cross over. Of the people who use the PS4, which ones would be interested in a cute, free-to-play MMO? Do they have money? Do they make up a large enough market to make it worthwhile to port over? How well do cash transactions bide in the PS4 marketplace?

I know you all can at least answer a few of the questions I asked, but it's all something to consider before you expand your market outwards. It's not a smart business decision to expand your market so those already invested in your market can use your services for free in a slightly different environment - the point of expanding is to reel in new, paying customers.

.

The possibility of this is zero. The dev team apparently has hardly any resources and a terribly slow content production rate as it is.

Owlert has a very good point. We can hope for a release on Steam for Linux and we'll have it on SteamOS/Steam Boxes but I wouldn't hope for much more.

If the gunner update hasn't came out after its announcement four months ago, no new content came out since the new pickups and tortodrone revival, and Puzzle Pirates hasn't hit the Google Play Store, then what could be the possibility of Spiral Knights getting spread?

@ Fangel

You're saying that consoles don't support Java.

So that would mean Minecraft was built from the ground up for the X Box 360 and PS3 right?

Are sure that consoles use java for minecraft, it's not so hard to port this game to another engine.

Yes I know

I'm pretty sure Minecraft has a different development team working on porting the game to its console counterparts. That's why it's behind on updates in comparison to the PC client the last time I checked.

Yeah. Console MC is non-Java with different dev teams.

Ok so maybe not for the PS4, but how about Steam machine consoles? They are supposed to have next-gen power (most of them) like the Alienware box and seeing that SK is already on Steam it wouldn't be hard to get it on there.

Steam-OS is linux-based... so shouldn't be a problem.

Besides, if you have steam, then you should be able to play most games on your library on steamOS.

Spiral Knights on the PS4 is possible.

I researched the PS4 before I got it. There are a number of reasons why we could play Spiral Knights on the PS4.

1) Spiral Knights can be played with a controller. I don't know about the PS4 controller specifically, but I have been meaning to try that.

2) Sony supports free to play games on the PS4. (Microsoft doesn't.) Examples include Blacklight Retribution (in beta) and Planetside 2 (coming soon).

3) The PS3 version of Portal 2 can be connected to Steam. This means there is a precedent to the kind of inter-connectivity necessary.

However. Due to the slow progress of OOO developers, the necessity of recoding the game, the dilemma of servers, the dilemma of marketing, and adjusting prices to better fit the PS4... I feel I can say with certainty that this will not happen.

We will probably be able to play it on the Steam Box or with a PS4 controller though!

As impossible as it is, I'd

As impossible as it is, I'd honestly buy a next-gen console just to play SK on it. I'd even get an Xbox One even after swearing one off for so long. v_v

But yeah, if only the dev team was a big bigger. Seems a bit too much to code for two platforms when it's as hard as it is right now on just PC. D:
