I just closed the game because I want to wait until after the patch to continue playing. This gives me 30 minutes of waiting + x minutes of downloading (5-10 via SKpatcher OR 40-45 via Steam). That got me thinking... Is there a way to trigger an update before the server resets? That would save me a lot of time :>

You can't, it checks a file online to see what the latest version is and updates if needed. But the file with the new version number doesn't get updated until the server shuts down.
Whenever the game launches, it looks somewhere for patches to download. If this place is different from the main server, or even any other program than the main server software- and I believe that it in all likelihood is either a separate function or stored on a cloud somewhere.
You should be able to patch your client while the server software is being updated, and no sooner (Or slightly sooner, but they've probably scripted the restart+update type thing to shut off the server + put out the update).
Moral of this story: Try launching the client directly after the server goes down.
There is an option to download patches even when you are playing another game on steam. I think the option is located in Steam settings/downloads. You'll still have to click on the game and wait for the game to install the patch though, so in the meantime you sleep? Or do something else :p

Well, it seems my wishes won't be granted today. At least today's patch went through the SK patcher and not the Steam one. Thanks for the answers, though.

Not everyone is awake at 0500 hours AEST.
probably not. i believe that they shut down the servers, load the patch, and then reboot them. that being said, i do not code games and release updates.
