Just wondering. Theres other topics to talk about. Are people uninterested in other things like movies, social media, how the day has been for them?

It's a simple route to popularity.

Start a forum game, it catches on, sooner or later it gets 100 replies, you make a re-branded version, that gets attention due to your previous game. Lather, rinse, repeat.

The reason why people make forum games, is because they get more attention. And more attention, means that the thread stays alive. That is what people want. But when people try to actually have a conversation, it doesn't go so well. Some people may post there, but that's about it. No one posts there anymore, then it eventually goes to the second page, which not many people bother to check.

but what if that person is a "big hit" with the previous "forum game" that the next thread they make is an actual conversation?

It bothers me, honestly

If I wanted to play a game I wouldn't be on a forum, dangit!

Even if discussions have a different lifetime, I want to see more of those in Gremlin Chatter, especially because those forum games just aren't fun to me. At all. If they didn't go "I eat your (blank), then do this", and when someone counters that they just eat the counter... I don't know, that is not an adaptive game. That is one person bending the rules and not allowing the game to be more than just about them.

Discussions are suprisingly easy to start in the Count to 5000 thread. There will be no discussion turned down in there.

Because the moderators agree that that is where the forum games belong for whatever reason, and the users of the forums don't seem to care that they could potentially discuss things that aren't Spiral Knights related in a civil manner. They would rather play grab donkey than actually use the forums, and apparently that is what the forums are for.

Well, besides the fact that hardly anyone bothers to create discussion threads in Gremlin Chatter, I think the following might contribute to the lack of discussion threads:

  • Forum games appeal to a wider variety of people than discussions about “things of a non-Spiral bent.” This is a forum for Spiral Knights, so everyone here has an interest in Spiral Knights. However, create a discussion thread about your favorite TV show before 1980, or your favorite constellation in the sky, and chances are significantly less people share an interest in the topic. Forum games attract more people because they require less interest or prior knowledge on the subject than discussion threads.
  • It also probably requires less time and effort to participate in or create and maintain a forum game compared to a discussion thread.
  • People might rather discuss non-Spiral Knight topics with family, real life friends, in-game friends, or neighbors than with people on a forum.
  • Plenty of people would rather read and follow a conversation than contribute and take the time to write responses.

I have had an idea for a discussion thread for a long time, but have not created it partly because of the recent history of discussion threads not doing too well in Gremlin Chatter. I have also already had two contests generate zero interest. Both of these have combined to make me apprehensive of creating a thread not directly related to Spiral Knights.

Forum games are something anyone can jump into. If you want to discuss about a topic about, say literature, society, et cetera, it just gets harder to jump into the discussion. Just like Mark says, it requires less time and effort to participate in a forum game than any other.

I remembered creating a giveaway, and there were loads of "lurkers" who jumped in because the reward factor is there.

I remember I used to roam there when I first joined the forum. There were a couple of discussion threads and such around where you could talk about your day, share some love... I never really cared for game threads, but I saw how much more popular they were than discussion threads and how many were made...

Even back then it was rather hard to keep a proper discussion thread alive, not awfully much activity there, and I guess the people who go there now don't really care for discussions.

Ever since I stopped going there I've only thought of it as the dump yard of the forum.
