On a console at depth 23...

Source: Drone #003

I cannot continue. Depth 29 appears to be the end of the road. I am here, dressed as one of Vaelyn's knights. The squad is bad at keeping track of its members, so no one realized that I am not one of them. I have already rewired one of their terminals to myself, since the terminal only has 4 CPUs. This is pitiful compared to my 16 CPUs.

The reason I cannot jump to the Core itself is lack of energy. Much like the eye of a storm, the vast amounts of energy that are in the atmosphere of this planet do not exist very close to the Core. The sudden flux of energy levels would fry my electronics and would slaughter a biological being. While Vaelyn's squad fiddles around with a simple pass code locking the elevator (Which I have already found, but not entered for the aforementioned reason.), I am trying to hack something much more challenging: the Core itself.

It is actually another safeguard of the Core that creates this death-field. This field prevents anything from getting in and harnessing it. The energy that floats in the air and powers devices is only a side effect of the death-field. This planet itself is a side effect.

Unfortunately, the file containing the pass code isn't in a regular file, like most security systems. It's in a shadow file. Shadow files are the opposite of a compression archive. Even though this code could be only bytes long, this code sealed in a shadow file is several yottabytes in size. I cannot decrypt this file on my own. I need help, yet my siblings aren't available this close to the Core. It shall take me a roughly a thousand years to obtain the code at this rate.

P.S:
If you're wondering what 'sudo rm -rf /' does, allow me to explain. sudo is a command which allows its user to have administrative privileges. rm is a command used to remove files, directories and such from a system. r is an option following rm which removes directories, though it removes the contents of it recursively beforehand. f is an option following rm, and it forces the delete as well as overriding any confirmation. So it basically forces the deletion of every file in the database, effectively removing the core from existence.

Hm...

Clever, but even if we do have "Admin Access" (not "and only if", since it might take a non-admin to do it), that only deletes the files surrounding the Core (because it wasn't stated that the Core itself was 100% data). Not very useful unless you really want to lock us for eternity, but...

edit : It isn't specified either that we're running on an Unix system (though that'd be hell to make any sense), and deleting that many bytes might take more than a few seconds / minutes...

The operating system isn't even specified. Because of this, and also because I use a Mac that runs on UNIX, I decided to use sudo rm -rf / , which only works on UNIX based machines. In fact, 'sudo' grants the user, and I quote: "the security privileges of another user (normally the superuser, or root)". This means that it enables "root commands only from the invoking terminal", allowing administrative commands to be used. It will thus delete the Core with administrative privileges if it is running on a system like UNIX.

You all assume the architecture of the Core is something simple, yes? Something familiar, yes? Something which allows exploits and much happinesses, yes? You will be wrong. The Core's architecture is built so that it will simply not execute certain prompts. It will have indexed several prompts which will have results different to what you expect. And what the registry holds is not exactly what resides in memory. For some of the data will be transferred from ROM to RAM as part of the bootup process and if you crash the system, that data shall be lost forever.

This is a devious system. Only by understanding the Core may you defeat it.

I destroy them.”

The reduce confusion, commands you type go to the computer that YOU ARE ON. As if you are actually there typing it. The only way it could go to a Core terminal is if you used rsh (remote shell) or ssh (secure shell) to access it. What you see in the OP is a log coming from a drone at the Core. You'll have to figure out how his log got up to this terminal.

drivemap [-l|-s] [-t directory] name target
Maps a drive to a directory. Name is a drive name, and should be one letter, like "C", for example. Target can either be a directory or a device. drivemap will attempt to figure it out, but if it cannot, it will assume it's a directory. the -m and -l options override this behavior. -l (symbolic link) will force drivemap to act as if target is a directory while -m (mount) will force it to behave as if it were a device. Mapped drives are stored in $DOSDRIVEDIR by default, but this can be overridden by using the -t option.

Since I cannot do anything else, I shall record my experiences. I shall start from after I jumped off Moorcroft Manner. It is important to note that I had not yet obtained a replacement arm at this point, so I was left with only a sword arm.

I skipped a few depths before landing on a deconstruction zone at Depth 12. Gremlins flocked everywhere, busily tearing metal off of the floor and walls. These pieces were then carted away by more workers.

One of the gremlins noticed my sudden arrival and beckoned a few of his friends. After getting over their initial surprise, they began discussing what to do with me. Some of them wanted to dismantle me. Others wanted to get rid of me ASAP. Others still wanted to sell me.

I had a different idea. A mechaknight, who didn't seem to notice me, strolled by on his preprogrammed patrol route. Such primitive a robot! I butchered its shoulder as soon as it got within sword's reach. Before it could turn to me, I gave it a kick in the head, sending it sprawling. Before those gremlins could react, I already stored the arm away. Before the gremlins could pull out their axes, I started running.

Unfortunately, the gremlins raised the alarm before I could get far. It wasn't long before I was surrounded by gremlins. Sprinting as quickly as I could, I cut down any of the workmen who got in the way. They seemed to have a knack for trying to trap me, but they were very bad at doing it; there was always some way out.

Somehow, they managed to corner me. Although no one would get behind me, it didn't matter. I figured that being overwhelmed would be inevitable. Sheathing my sword, I pulled out a Big Angry Bomb. I threw the lit bomb at my feet before anyone else could react. My foes shrieked and backed away. Some started tossing their hammers at me, but I wasn't worried about that.

The fuse grew short. I jumped and curled up. The blast flung threw me into the air, over the heads of the flock of gremlins and out of the complex. Thanks to the angle which I had chosen, flew out of the deconstruction zone. My trajectory sent me to a terminal not far below. Landing feet-first, I crashed on the floor.

My legs ceased functioning. All my attempts to stand were useless. Although I have been built my masterful hands, nothing could take so much abuse.

I pulled myself to a wall. With just one arm and no legs, it took a while before I reached my destination. When I finally got to the wall, I pulled myself up against it and began attaching the mechaknight's arm from earlier. Fortunately, I got the shield arm. Unfortunately, some thick-headed gremlin decided that all mechaknights should live with a wrench for a left arm, so it wasn't nearly as useful as my right one. However, it was better than nothing.

Unlike knights of the Spiral Order, I lack means to contact help. I cannot let the Order know I am here simply because I am not connected to their network. No matter how hard I try, the elevators of the clockworks always seem to freeze up whenever I set foot on them, so I can't use the one in this terminal. My siblings haven't responded for weeks now, so they cannot help either. I shall enter standby mode until something interesting happens.

AR: I understand that you hold 3 special things under your possession. Is this correct?
AA: i can't tell you
AR: Don't be so tight-lipped.
AA: i'll leave if you act like that
AR: The ancient texts never said you would be so rude. Are you really the Arbiter?
AA: don't question my position. i don't trust you so i can't answer that question
AR: Then I'll answer my questions for you.
AR: You are located very near the core. So near, in fact, that your the time in your location has been halted. Because of this, you haven't aged for centuries.
AR: In addition, all 3 of your associates also haven't aged.
AA: O_O
AR: I assume this wide-eyed face proves me right, does it not?
AA: yes, i guess so
AR: So, I already know a lot. I need to fill in the gaps of my knowledge.
AR: Shall I dazzle you with more info?
AR: Or will you tell me what I want to know?
AA: i suppose
AR: You must have the 3 items I mentioned previously, since you're the Arbiter.
AR: Does the owner inherit the kingdom?
AA: i think so
AA: but why would anyone want to do that? the kingdom is full of zombies!
AR: I'm not interested in such a thing. I do not wish to disturb such an artifact as the kingdom.
AA: :I <-- skeptical face
AR: I am genuinely curious. If you have to know, I'm just writing a book on this topic.
AA: what!? such a book could ruin everything!
AR: Rest assured that I won't publish the book.
AA: i forbid you from writing such a book! don't even write a single letter of that book!
AR: I have already written 6 chapters.
AA: burn it!
AR: ...
AA: BURN IT NOW! >:C
AR: How threatened I feel by your big text face. I am quivering in fear.
AR: I am now stoking a fire using my sarcasm.
AR: How nice it smells.
AR: It's wonderful smell shall spread throughout the clockworks.
AA: i am not kidding you, buster. burn the book
AA: burn it or face the circumstances!
AR: You cannot tell me what to do. You cannot even threaten me. If you left your abode, your age would catch up to you.
AA: shut up
AR: Like I said, you're more rude that I expected.
AA: if i ever see your face, i'll rip it off and use it as a pillow case
AR: Idle threats. You're useless to me right now.
