A long time ago it used to be possible to be a 5* rescue camp knight; get invited by friends to do FSC a couple of times, get 5* gear, etc.
That was destroyed by gear unlocking only at certain levels by playing the missions from beginning to end.

It also used to be possible to get invited to a guild, go to guild hall, then exit into Haven. You could run the CW anywhere up to your rank level, which is now not possible until you finish the last rank 1 missions. (which aren't re-playable)

"It's supposed to extend the gameplay, Paintool."

I just wish the gameplay wasn't so linear in regards to missions.
Getting into places where you don't belong and truly testing yourself to the limit was fun. That why I miss that purple-eye danger meter thing. >w<

P.S.
FSC proto weapon runs became that much harder with those one way doors...

Yeah, I kind of feel like it was a way of really making it feel like SK had progression via the mission system.

But you know, despite the flaws, I kind of appreciate the old way better - it felt more free-form and 'pick-up-and-play', but at the cost of longevity and the possibility of paying players hitting endgame and disappearing much quicker :x

I forget who it was, but I

I forget who it was, but I liked someone's suggestion to integrate missions into the CW arcade. You would have to run into certain depths and see certain events to complete a mission. It's also possible that you see hints of future events early on, which would be interesting because you'd have to back track or explore an earlier point to progress deeper down.

I'm with you on this one. I like the missions, don't get me wrong... but the open formatting and exploration feeling, especially as you met friends in the arcade was way way cooler than ANY mission will ever be.

And did you mean this thread? http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/95121

New player perspective

Thought I'd chime in here as a new Squire not tainted by what was before...

I've been playing solo, I realize it is an MMO, but being a Puzzle Pirates vet, I trust OOO to be rewarding skill rather than just another 'grind for equipment' game. That being said, I play for free and have been sorta evaluating the game design by trying to do things within my coordination limits. What that means is I do the missions, I do some Arcade - both. I do Missions until either I don't want my life/configuration to change (like not getting a Battle Sprite until I have stockpiled minerals to be able to feed it) or until my default 'free' gear just won't help me complete a mission (as is the case with level 1 gear and Toy Soldier). I go to the Arcade and poke around, trying different instance types, discover what types drop what mineral more than others, etc.

What this has done is just what some of you are suggesting. I remember the first time I experienced the three instance Snarlobox missions in the Arcade. I had no idea what was going on. I'm walking through the woods hunting wolves and suddenly I hear this bell ringing and some black shadow zooms by and burrows. It scares the player a little ... then it makes them curious. They dig around in the wiki a bit and find out 'who was that masked monster' . I did that, realized it was the Snarlobox and quit the sequence before the final instance when one fights him.

So, in essence, the Arcade 'previewed' a future mission. I am still quite a few missions away from getting the Snarlobox Mission, but I can experiment with the Arcade version any time I want to. In fact it gives me incentive to stick it out beyond level 5 and try the lower levels building confidence as I go.

Sure the missions are fine, and they do teach players some of what they need to know. But it is in the Arcade that a player hones their skills early on and becomes familiar with more of the monster attack patterns ... and has the variety that keeps them coming back.

It's still possible, catch is, you need an account with 5 star from before the pets update mid last year. I did that (Thank you OCH proto run).
