Hi, i have been playing spiralknights for about a year now and i have enjoyed every second of it (exept when i lag >.<). However i have always found that there was something missing in the game. Like you have a gun that you can barely hit enemies with and when you do its not even worth the effort (neutralizer). Or you got your hands on the calahan and can´t even hit any of thoes flying gorgos cus they are terrible and should be removed from the game.

I guess what im getting at here is that there are some aspects of the game that doesent even makes sence, sometimes it works and sometimes it just ruins your day for having the least bit of hope in it actualy working.

Take the acient plate mail for example. When you are going to fsc in this set you are almost imune to trojans (the horse thingy, i dont know what they are called) because they deal normal damage. But you cant take damage from anything else before you are on your knees begging for a health capsule to drop from the next monster and besides, wy would you even use it, neither you or your team mates benefit from it and you call that being "tanky and slow". Lets be honest here, i mean who, no for real who the hell plays fsc with the acient plate mail. The attack and movment speed decreas just isnt worth the extra "tankynes" you get out of it. But dont get me wrong love the acient plate mail just for that reason, i just want more of it.

Now you might be asking yourself, what on cradel does this guy want! I want a reason for something to exist in the game, i want something to be good when you try to be good with it and im not talking about forgeing your gear to level 10 with the new forging system (lousy pice of sh..). No im talking about having setbonuses in the game to give some of the forgoten weapons a bit more reason to exist.

Let me give you some examples allright:
1. Lets go back to the calahan situation, so the whole point of the calahan and the ironslug weapons is to knock softbodied enemies over so that they cant move. And what kind of enemies are softbodied, fiends and beast of course. (wich both are weak agains piercing btw).

And what enemies in the game are hard to hit with the calahan or any other gun for that matter? Well fiends and beast of course.

And what is the best way to solve this problem. Well duh, use blizt neelde stupid, Or you could make a set bonus for the shadowsun set to have an increased projectile speed when you equip the whole set so that you could actually hit thoes nasty gorgos that fly around everywere. And in doing so you help to improve the neutralizer at the same time.(whatever that it)

2. Back to the plate mail. I said before that i love that plate mail just becaus it gives you a feeling of being tanky. But then you relise that you really arent. And the whole idéa of the movment and attack speed decrease is that you are suposed to be moving alot slower, but in reality you arent. I mean when im using it i dont feel a diference in moving and attacking slower at all. At least not enought that i have to calculate were to attack to prevent me from getting hit.

So i thougt to myself as i was playing a bit with the set. Wouldnt it be cool if ,when i had the full set equiped, i had a movment and attack speed decreased of max and instead of using swords and guns, i ran (or i mean slowly drag myself ) around and placed down bombs while im being targeted by all the enemies to help my team take them down, you know as a tank in many other videogames works. And in return i will be given a huge defense boost and an increased guard meter to my shield so that i can sustain much more damage, because everything is out to get me. And everyone else can focus on dealing damage.

So thats wy i think there should be setbonuses in the game.

Holy cow you actually redd the whole thing, well gz to you m8. Hopefully i made you think about having setbonuses in the game a bit. And please give me your feedback on this because want to expand this idéa and balance it so that maybe just maybe we will see some kind of reaction from OOO or gamemasters or whoever is incharge of this masterpice.

You're a very opinionated person.

If you can't hit Gorgos or beasts with a Callahan/Iron Slug, you're not doing it right. I've gunned them down many a time with both of those. The hitboxes on the bullets are just weird, so when something is moving the hit won't register 100% of the time.

That being said, I wouldn't mind set bonuses as long as they weren't completely ridiculous. Increased Shield Health for wearing full Ancient Plate would be neat. Not sure if guns need "projectile speed" increased. The speed is related to the mechanics of the gun. Altering how fast bullets reach the target would feel unnatural to me.

radiant silvermail
thats already 2 reasons to not do this
also zebulon in the hall of heroes says to try mixing things
and theres no reason to mix gear if you get a set bonus

The gunner update plans on

The gunner update plans on bringing some new and fast Piercing guns so the Gorgo problem will be easier for gunners to deal with.

The Ancient Plate set has a very Niche use for players with CTR and ASI Uvs. It also is the best set for surviving in T1 and T2 on laggy days.

The problem with a lot of defensive sets is that players are rewarded much more for having attacking boosts instead of extra defense. I believe flinch immunity and a lack of Charge reduction when hit, for Plate sets would make them a bit better.

The developers experimented with set bonuses early on in development, and didn't like them. Vog Cub set used to give you movement speed increased whenever you wore the entire set, and it made it much better to wear the full set than to wear either piece of it, which works against the idea of players mixing and matching armors for the best result.

My largest thought that I express every few weeks when it comes up, is that the concept of armor in general used during development is relatively poor.

The "classic" Spiral Knights armor consists of:

  • One bar of OK defense, normal for "defensive" items or specialized for perk related armor
  • One bar of good defense, normal for perk related armor or specialized for "defensive" armor
  • One status resistance, which grants exactly +4
  • A different status resistance, which also grants +4 OR a medium weapon perk
  • The sets that people tend to value the most and want to go towards are more all encompassing. The perfect mask of seerus is a prime example of this:

  • Two bars of "good" defense; normal and elemental, damage types found on a common boss
  • Two bars of +4 status resistance, for the 2 most often feared statuses, fire and shock
  • Good stats that support a common strategy for their weapon of choice, handguns
  • Two bars of negative status resistance against less immediately feared statuses, freeze and poison
  • The perfect mask of seerus just gives more in general, and it gives it in the right way- by fulfilling what the player needs both defensively and offensively. It offers the player an identity with their weapon- if they bring it, they'll want to use handgun charges. This leads to alchemers and blitz needles dominating, with the occasional brandish to back it up, as it does nothing to hinder that. If anything, I think that the game should learn from this and make ALL armors and status effects fulfill these kinds of criteria. The player shouldn't be forced into crafting an armor so that they can resist X, the player should want to craft an armor to become X with their play style.

New plate armor: (And this is just a concept to illustrate, and nothing more)

  • A bit of extra HP; like one or two more pips than usual
  • One bar of amazing normal defense; same as volcanic plate
  • Two bars of "OK" specialized defense; like shadow and elemental
  • Two bars of +3 to two statuses of choice; like stun and poison
  • One bar of +5 to one status of choice; like fire
  • A high positive weapon stat; like damage
  • Two negative med weapon stats; like attack speed and charge time
  • Negative MSI: low
  • The end result? A knight that deals the max damage, has excellent defenses, excellent status resistances, but moves incredibly slowly and must still be relatively competent when it comes to playing the game. They need to get in less hits to finish things, but require a lot more planning to execute their attacks. This would be vastly different from something like what we currently have, as it would encompass an entire play style, rather than just granting the knights some basic stats.

Another idea, that I would also like to see is more special bonuses per armor piece. For instance, pill health restoration increased: med, would make ancient plate set pretty nice. What would it do? Using a pill would restore you the extra +3 that each armor piece gave. Little things like that could differentiate armor sets without the need for massive stat manipulation.
