I think the better question
I think the better question is why can't we freely select which eyes we want to wear without destroying the precious pair?
Or how about eyes being sold as 30 day consumables? That would let people switch back and forth and it would be a good crown sink too.
Another question: "Why doesn't OOO want to make money?"

Well first off they'd have to reprogram how eyes work in general, as the game doesn't support having two different images for eyes- all eyes are mirrored copies of themselves, and this would break that.
Second off they haven't really been using the eyes that often to sell in general. They've made all of 2 new eye types- lovely and now the snowflake ones- since they came out with the ability to change eyes. There are a ton of eyedeas that could be implemented easily. I made a good 7 new eye types that worked perfectly well a while ago and it went ignored, so I suspect that they just don't care to do this kind of thing- http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/102314

Would anyone (other than a handful of crazy rich people) actually invest in a 30 day eye type changer? I mean it'd be cool to test it, if it returned your eye type after a day and cost like 500 crowns so that you could test it in addition to what we have, but IDK... it'd be like the grey trojan mask that the bulk of players ignore.

In fact maybe OOO is onto it too, because they don't release 30-day trojan or Love puppy masks anymore.
The incentive isn't worth the price, so they need to figure out how to really sell it so people will continue to sink big money into it.
It would look kinda weird for those with prismatic glowing eyes
