What goes in the special slot?!

I have a 3 star tempered caliber recipe and all the materials, but i still can't make one. What goes in the special/caliber slot?!
I guessed I needed a 2 star caliber to drop in there and it would work like a weapon upgrade, but that doesn't work either!
Do i need one that isn't already bound to me......that would be annoying since I only bound it to me whilst I refound the materials i used to bulid it!

I had. No sword equipped when
I had. No sword equipped when i restarted, but now it works!...must have been a minor bug

Did you unequip it while the
Did you unequip it while the crafting station was open?
It won't register it until you exit the station and open it again. Annoying I know. I always forget to take my gear off first.

Put the sword from your
Put the sword from your equipment screen into your Arsenal list.
Then, drag the sword from the Arsenal list into the Alchemy window's Special slot.
This is also how you can select a specific weapon to upgrade if you have more than one copy (i.e. with different UVs).
You can't be wielding the equipment you are trying to upgrade. Unequip it first, you silly goose.
