RPG: Tales of Symphonia.

RPG: Tales of Symphonia. Hands down. Never got into FF.

MMORPG: Toughie, seeing as I haven't been playing many lately. If I had to say, would either be SK, of course, Star Trek Online, despite being ghost town, or MapleStory, just cause it's always been there when I relapse.

Actually it is an MMORPG since it meets the criteria to be considered one:

Massive - More then a few friends sitting in the same room to play
Multiplayer - More then one person able to play at a time
Online - well yea we are on the internet to play
Role Playing Game - We take the idenity of knights to transverse the clockworks

So while there may not be a wide world to explore (yet) doesnt mean it doesnt consitute being an MMORPG. Actually the instances are floor to floor so if you were to lay them out side by side the result would most like span a very "wide world" worth of distance.

Role Playing Game - We take

Role Playing Game - We take the idenity of knights to transverse the clockworks

With that definition every game is an RPG.
"Super Mario is an RPG, we take the identity of a plumber to save a princess.."

I would rather call this an MMOHAS
Massive Multiplayer Online Hack And Slash

It's debatable whether this

It's debatable whether this game should get classified as an MMORPG. That's not a bad thing; games that try to do something innovative often don't fit in the pre-existing categories--though if successful enough, they sometimes create a new, well-recognized genre.

Some people would quibble about whether the game is "massive", the first M in MMORPG. The economy is, and haven is, but all of the real action takes place in the clockworks, where you're limited to a party of four.

The RPG in MMORPG seems to have been diluted into being nearly meaningless. At some point, RPGs were supposed to have something of a storyline. Often it degenerates into, we have to kill this boss because it drops epics, with only a thin veneer of any other justification. See, for example, farming jelly palace in this game.

If you want to use an expansive enough definition of MMORPG to include Spiral Knights, then the best one ever made is Guild Wars. But some people would quibble about that being an MMORPG, for a lot of the same reasons as Spiral Knights. The campaigns of Guild Wars did actually have a good storyline, though, which is unusual for an MMORPG.

My favorite RPG is either

My favorite RPG is either Final Fantasy or Knights of the Old Republic.

MMORPG probably Puzzle Pirates because it does fit the massive sense when you have 1000+ people fighting in a single blockade and the game takes forever to advance with your stats and all, very challenging and a ton of options of what to do. But I have to say a very much enjoy this game. Three Rings has done a great job with their games.

I can't believe no one said their favorite RPG is The Elder Scrolls series!

Anyway, this is in the wrong section.

Personally, I see this game

Personally, I see this game as an MMO-rougelike. About the same, but a little more emphasis on the action part and a little less emphasis on the story part.

My favorite RPG... I have a ton of favorite RPG's.. I can't pick just one.
Favorite MMORPG... World of Warcraft, since that's the only MMORPG I've played...

Also, this topic should be moved to the Gremlin Chatter Forum.

hack 'n slash

Most games that declare themselves RPG or MMORPG are not roleplaying in my opinion. It's just a Computer Game genre that got that label for some reason. Most of such games instead are usually rollplaying, adventure or hack 'n slash. I'd agree with MeSako, Spiral Knights is hack 'n slash.

That said, I don't think the developers (OOO) ever declared this game as an MMORPG. Only its players ever did.

My favorite roleplaying game: D&D. I wish my friends got their act together and we started playing again.
