what would be more beneficial in the short term? upgrading my dark thorn blade into a barbarous thorn blade, or my freezing vaporizer II into a freezing atomizer. Is the extra damage from a 5* weapon worth the upgrade cost?

the freezing atomizer is not such an improvement.... but if you make it into the shivermist, then you'll see a huge (radius) difference !!!
I'd probably go with the sword. Haze bombs do get an outlandishly huge damage upgrade when going from 3* to 4*, and it will pick up a half square of blast radius...and those are all good. But if you're mostly a blade guy, then you are using it for the freeze cloud. Since the cloud lingers, the area isn't as important, and the damage is almost totally unimportant since the monsters will rarely be hit by it at all.
