Why do greavers apply conditions through shields?

The usual way it goes with most mobs is this. Mob uses attack that would apply condition if it hits you. You use your shield. The mob hits you, but your shield absorbs the damage and survives. You don't take any damage. You don't get hit with a condition.

Unless the mob is a greaver. In that case, the same scenario plays out, except that you do get stuck with the condition, even though you take no damage from the original attack and your shield survives it. Is that a bug, or is there some reason for it?

The greaver itself isn't

The greaver itself isn't applying the status effect. The cloud it leaves behind when attacking (in tier 2 or 3) is what is applying the status effect, and you can't block it.

Sure you can shield bump

Sure you can shield bump easily. Or even just attack them to interrupt their attacks (that's kind of what I do now, slash slash slash). But it's still unusual that their status goes through your shield that can block everything else in the entire game if it survives.

I don't worry about it much though, I mostly avoid fiend :D

Last I checked a shield has a hard time blocking toxic gases from entering your system.

Last I checked, a shield also

Last I checked, a shield also has a hard time blocking missile explosions, but that works just fine in the game.

Yeah, our shields visibly

Yeah, our shields visibly generate an energy field that shields our rear too, so.

My guess would be, that this

My guess would be, that this is a lazy "bugfix" for greaver mist making movement while shielding / shield bumping greavers almost impossible and breaking your shield very quickly while you're actually just trying to deflect those fiends, not the mist.

You fought those toxilawhateveryoucallthem, right? The worst thing about their poison mist is it making it difficult to shield-bump / move shielded, which can put you into a very bad position. This would be a lot worse with enemies as fast as greavers.

Ufna makes a good point. If

Ufna makes a good point. If you've ever gotten stuck in a zombie breath you've noticed that you can't move through it while shielded. If the greavers flew at you and dropped a shield blockable mist you'd end up stuck and they would completely surround you and give you no chance to get out without taking the status anyway.

Shock, spasm, dead.

Or in the case of fighting the shock greavers on T3, it would go, 3 or 4 surround you, each drops a cloud, shocks you with no recourse, while you're standing there spasming, they take all your health. Can't shield it, they're faster than you so you can't kite them, and I don't know how effective bombs would be since I go sword/gun. I try to avoid shock stratas in T3, just so I don't have to run into those damn bat/moth things. I haven't fought any shock greavers since the monster nerf, though, so maybe it's not as bad any more?

They are still OP

@Burkhart Nope those T3 Shock Greavers are still OP with their surround > shock > eat your life away ability... The dev really need to look into this. Maybe reduce their number because facing 4-6 of them at one time is just wasting energy.

Doesn't this happen also when you step on the spit of a lizard? (status even though shielded)

Zombie breath and lizard spit

Zombie breath and lizard spit don't inflict conditions if you block it, though they do make you chain block it. Both of those give you ample warning to get out of the way. Greavers give you some warning, but if you try to move out of the way, they'll follow you and still drop the condition right on top of you. That's what makes the condition so nasty. It's like what zombie breath would be if zombies would turn to face you while doing the breath, so that it was impossible to sidestep it.

It's the sole exception to

It's the sole exception to how every other monster ability in the game works, with regards to shields. That's a problem, from a consistency point of view.
