The little dot to the lower right of the mini-map.

I've seen it green, orangish, red...

Theories as to what it is? Difficulty of level relative to depth?

That's the threat indicator.

That's the threat indicator. It let's you know how additionally difficult the level will be due to increased party size and combined star value of weapons and gear.

We're still working out this feature.

Err ...

Can you explain that a little more? (And yes, I understand it's a work in progress)

Monsters will be stronger

Monsters will be stronger when the threat indicator increases.

The threat indicator becomes 'hotter' due to two things: more party members and higher star values of gear in the party. The higher the threat indicator, the stronger the monsters will spawn. So a solo player with 0 star gear is going to receive the easiest experience while a party of four decked out in 5 star gear will receive a greater challenge.

So it'll be much easier to

So it'll be much easier to use level 10 2 star gear than level 1 3 star gear, even thought the stats on the 2 star gear are generally better?

No, I think level is going to

No, I think level is going to be taken into account as well.

Of course, everyone with 4-star gear is still going to be bringing along a 2-star Brandish and/or Spur, so who knows how that'll work.

It's actually pretty

It's actually pretty beneficial to play in sidekick mode. With my leveled up 4-star gear (drake scale helm, drake scale armor, swiftstrike buckler, firotech MK II, cryotech MK II, khorovod, vile striker), I can have a newbie (or two) with me in areas that I could otherwise solo, and we tear things up.

And, yes. I'd tear things up if I were solo, but it's more fun with others, and they level up gear faster, they collect crowns faster, and they generally enjoy the challenging mid-to-lower levels more.

Am I missing out on items? Maybe, but how many red shards do I really need? Really.
