Maybe have it like zelda style, were you hold it and it targets a monster.
It would help laptop uses greatly.

The point of autotarget is to fine-tune mouse selection but not to make it braindead easy. I guess aiming already is with most swords, but for guns, it still takes at least some skill to autotarget the monster you want, especially among hoardes.
By the way, nothing is preventing you from plugging in a mouse.
Um, I'm used to playing using the X,Z, and C keys, for attacking and facing, and arrow keys for movement. I don't want to have to re-learn how to move and get the hang of it with a mouse.
--EDIT--
Ok so, With people who use a mouse, they can circle, face, and shoot their enemy at once. Players that use the setup I do have to run, stop, aim and then shoot, it's a slow process, and when you stop to aim, or anything else, you take a chance to take damage. It just feels like if you don't use a mouse, then you're at a disadvantage. Also, if the game was meant to be played using the mouse, then why can we use the arrow keys?
@Cobalt and dinosaurs died out... and you, PC dinosaurs, who still refuse to use a mouse, will die out eventually. Or switch to using mouse.
I was one of these dinosaurs back in Duke Nukem 3D era. And then came... the mouse! And the world changed...
Trust me, the sooner you switch, the better.
Really need such a thing, especially for game pads, can't aim with guns/pots with a stick.
I use the track-pad on my laptop quite well. I also agree with Windowl's sentiment that auto-targeting should not be made that easy
All-in-all I think it would be easier for you to re-learn a new set of controls than for OOO to program this auto-target system.
For gamepads, I can see needing a better system. I tried using a gamepad and it's so inferior to a keyboard and mouse that it's a joke.
Not sure if you guys know this, but in the options there's a key mapping for toggle autotarget. That key (l-shift by default) will toggle auto target to the opposite state when held. So if you have the autotarget box checked holding that that key will turn it off. This can be very usefull for snapping the target lock from monster to monster, or for when you're aiming for the explosive box next to a monster.
ah yeah sticky target then you press an button to switch-targeting
