Why does the game download every time I run it?
This is kind of annoying, any particular reason for this besides "We want to keep every part of the game server side so people don't cheat"?
Uh, I know.
Once again: Every time I run the game it redownloads "something" before the login screen comes up
It's patching, the game is in pre-launch status so there's a lot of patching.

The game's been pretty consistent with patching, getting one or two every day or so for the past week.
Maybe it's coincidence.
It's either that or something's up with your Java's caching/downloading/whatever thingamajigs. Not my specialty though, so I can't advise anything. :V
I ran the client twice within 2 min right now and each time it downloaded something. If it was patches it would do them all at once. Let me quit the game and see if it happens again.
What's your operating system and Java version?
If you're using Microsoft Windows, what browser are you using?
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Java version 6 update 22
Google chrome, but that doesnt have to do with anything besides the initial download of the client, does it?
Where are you launching the game from? The web? A desktop shortcut? Perhaps you're launching the installation each time instead of the actual program?

You shouldn't need to download new files between patches (the last one was released Thursday evening). Can you post a copy of your launcher.log file, it will be in the Spiral Knights installation directory. (If you used the installer that would be Program Files (x86)\Three Rings Design\Spiral I believe, and from the web launcher it would be under your user directory in AppData\LocalLow\spiral).
> Google chrome, but that doesnt have to do with anything besides the initial download of the client, does it?
If you download the installable executable, no.
If you play from the browser and a "Play Now" button, yes.
Anyone else using Chrome? This might be a security feature that's interacting badly.
I downloaded the installer and run it from a shortcut on my desktop
Well, maybe if you ran the installed game instead of the installer, It wouldn't "install" all over again?
Just a hint. =P
har har, you so smart
"it" = the game.
the installer doesn't create a desktop shortcut, it is an .exe, and every one maybe except you would know the difference between the two
don't waste your time or any one else's with your useless replies.
Just a hint =P
Sigh.
First, I don't know the current state of the windows installer. So take this with two grains of salt, and one of sugar.
Three rings uses a technology they developed called "getdown". It is a download/update manager with a number of advantages over Java Web Start. It's actually a vastly superior replacement, but it's a little harder to use. (Harder for the packager, not for the end user).
Second, for the mac "installer" (and I think the windows as well), you only install a "skeleton" -- the getdown code (a java program), and a text file that tells it how to get the additional data (the main program). There may be a graphic or two as well (what Getdown displays while loading the whole thing over the network).
So, it is very "reasonable" to expect the following behavior:
1. Run the installer (an .exe, as opposed to an .msi). It will create the getdown program in Program Files\Three Rings Design\Spiral Knights.
It may create shortcuts on the desktop
It probably creates shortcuts in the start menu
2. Run the main program -- actually getdown.
It downloads the main program, and then runs it.
3. Run the main program again (the next time you play.)
Getdown runs, validates that the program is there.
Getdown then runs the program.
The program determines that it is out of date, and tells getdown to update.
Getdown then updates ( another download), and starts the game.
4. Run the program again (yet another playtime)
Getdown validates, program runs, is up to date, all is happy.
That's the "normal", expected behavior. The first run downloads the program. Given the large number of updates for a beta program, there will be more updates. Some will require a server restart and all clients to restart; some will only affect new client runs and not require that existing connected clients quit and restart.

Well updates are sorta frequent...
Uh, you can download the client and install it anywhere you want. You don't need to launch it from the web every time you want to play.
