I want to become a pro at this game, but I'm don't have as much knowledge as some of you do.

I'm an all-roundish and anti-vanilla kind of guy and I'm wondering what is the best gear for me for basically everything, but most importantly Firestorm Citadel, Shadow Lairs, and Lockdown (and Roarmulus Twins and Jelly King and Snabolax and everything else). This is a biiig question, but answer it to the best of your ability. Here's what I currently have, and I need your help to tell me what I should get, what I should get rid of, and what I should upgrade to.

In alphabetical order...

---Swords---

Vile Striker, I'm considering on selling this, and I probably will if I get a Biohazard for poisoning.

Nightblade, so I heard you like Acherons, but I might replace this with a Gran Faust.

Sealed Sword, Divine Avenger.

Swift Flourish, gonna upgrade to a Final Flourish but I might replace this with a Barbarous Thorn Blade.

---Handguns---

Kilowatt Pulsar

Needle Shot, at first I regretted getting this for its lack of movement while it's fired, but apparantly the Blitz Needle is good for FSC, but the Callahan looks tempting...

Maybe Catalyzer, I'm going through a couple of RT runs for this and I'd upgrade it to a Biohazard for shadow damage and poison infliction, but I may not if it's not that good.

Maaaybe Antigua, if I get it, I'd upgrade to a Argent Peacemaker, but from maaany sources, it's bad.

---Bombs---

Freezing Vaporizer

Graviton Charge

Sun Shards

Twisted Spine Cone

---Helmets and Armor---

Angelic, do not want Heavenly Iron, would prefer Valkyrie.

Drake Scale, I'm basically keeping this because it looks epic, but I would like to know about any uses for it.

Dusker, I'd rather upgrade this to a Skolver, but I don't have to.

Elemental, I do not want the Chaos set, and I don't think I would need a Divine set because I already have an Angelic set.

---Shields---

Drake Scale Shield, keeping for the reason said above, but I'm not that attached to it if it's not that good.

Horned Owlite Shield

Scary Skelly Shield

Twisted Targe, I might replace this with another piercing defense shield if the sword damage gained to defense lost is unsatisfactory.

All posts are welcome, mostly. If I could make it rain cookies, they would be so delicious and moist.

Are you a swordsman, a gunner

Are you a swordsman, a gunner or a bomber ? Or do you want to develop all 3 roles ? I assume you want to be a swordsman, but if you also want to be a gunner and bomber, your guns and bombs are seriously lacking.

For your swords, you have 3 non-normal swords, so it's ok. That doesn't change if you replace Nightblade by Gran Faust.

Vile striker is not very useful, but you can keep it to have a normal weapon if you switch to gunner/bomber. Note that it's also used against Vanaduke mask.

As for guns, if you are not a gunner, you don't need Callahan. Other piercing weapons are simply better. But you certainly want a Blitz Needle for FSC, because it's very good (OS trojans and kill Vanaduke very fast without the need to water his fireballs).

As for bombs, you should look into other status bombs. Fire and shock are extremely good bombs, especially against jellies (and fire in ice queen lair is a no-brainer).

For helmets and armor, you should really go for role-specific armors if you want to use the best options. Don't use drake scale, the lack of normal defense and the fact that you'll not often encounter elemental and piercing at the same time make it rather useless.

Same for the shield. Your other shield makes a good combo : one of each damage resistance.

DVS is good for JK fights.

DVS is good for JK fights. Keep it.
Acheron vs gran faust has been debated many times. Genrally accepted is, acheron has a better charge, more dps on single/low number of enemies. Gran faust has... everything a heavy sword has. Think of it as a shadow troika.

BTB is a great sword, difference from flourish lines being the charge. Flourish has a charge thats basically a stronger combo. Btb charge is a spray of thorns outward, 5* having a snarby bite added along. Shorter range, more controls, less damage.

Consider adding a brandish line, as you might like it better than the avengers.

Upgrading to a gigawatt helps tremendously in a solo fsc run. Outside fsc, consider an alchemer in order to not annoy teammates with mini nitro blasts. Shock, nova, magma are all decent choices for alchemer lines.

Cat line is a preference choice, depending on your love of setting huge explosions up. Biohazard for the shadow damage in RJP

All good bombs at 5*. What about electron vortex? Similar to grav, but elemental, and chance to inflict shock. Takes krogmo coins to obtain recipes though.

I have no experience or knowledge with angelic sets.

Split elemental/piercing defence is not widely popular, due to normal damage in all tiers and strats. It is good in a general purpose set, but becomes useless when you understand what damage you take most in different strats and start building specialized/normal defence armour.

Wolver line is popular for swordmen. Vog for asi/elemental+fire, and skolver for damage/piercing+freeze. Vog is great for fsc and vanaduke runs, but any experienced player can take minimal fire damage in there. Either way, you can complement the missing asi/damage with trinkets. The vog basically replaces the divine set for swordsmen. Or used in the popular divine veil+skolver set. General purpose, defends from almost everything.

Owlite is a great elemental shield, and the fire resist makes it popular in fsc. Yes, volcanic plate is better for most of vana fight, but owlite is effective outside of fsc in almost any strat. Elemental is present almost every clockworks depth.

Scary skelly is a decent shadow set, the shield being the easily accesible shadow shield in the game. Crest of almire, from blackened shield of vaa boss reward, is considered best shadow shield. Takes time to get though.

Snarby shield is a great shield to get. Swordsmen's shield, with damage bonus med at 5*. Good amount of piercing defence. Ironmight and one of the jelly shields are supposed to be higher in piercing, but not a noticeable amount. Those are good for non sword users.

@Demonicsothe Have you used

@Demonicsothe Have you used the DVS against RJ lately? I feel like his headbutt attack will make mincemeat out of you if you try to do a DVS combo on him.

Nope. I don't touch the

Nope. I don't touch the cutter line. But I've seen it used well. And that headbutt/touch damage is just... really off. Hard to dodge, even at max sword range with a faust.

The people I've seen it use well tend to be the ones with full 5*, and speed running RJP while carrying new players. They use the dvs until poison, then switch to something else.

edit: The damage by being close seems to happen less if you are not the target it's following. Still gotta smack it from as far away as possible though.

piercing, elemental, shadow

Swords: I can't answer any better than I already have in general. Do NOT replace Final Flourish with Barbarous Thorn Blade. They are roughly equal, so crafting BTB would be a waste of resources. In fact, I might slightly prefer FF. Generally I prefer Acheron over GF too. As other posters have suggested, there is not much point in getting DVS.

Handguns: You're working on piercing, elemental, and shadow, which is great if you plan to be a gunner at some point. If you just want a sidearm for swords, then you need just an elemental gun. The developers are actively considering changing the damage types of Argent Peacemaker and Sentenza. Do not get Antigua until this shakes out.

Bombs: I agree with Fradow about fire and shock. Consider also the love-it-or-hate-it Nitronome. Really, just read the Bombing Guide on the wiki. It's pretty good.

Shield: Grey Owlite and Dread Skelly are fine. Definitely get Barbarous Thorn Shield. You will not find that the defense lost is bad; you will love the offense gained.

Armor: Consider armor that gives offensive bonuses, before purely defensive armor. Yes, get Skolver. Also get Vog Cub. Use Angelic to run Shadow Gloaming Wildwoods and get Snarbolax. Consider getting gunner and bomber armor.

It's a bit tricky using a DVS

It's a bit tricky using a DVS on RJ. You cant use the full combo, just do like 2 swings and then back off or shield and get bounced out.

New and Improved!

I am gonna upgrade the swords that I currently have, other than the VS, instead I will consider a Brandish sword, either a Voltedge or a Combuster, not a Glacious, because I think it's pointless to attack a monster that's already frozen.

Gonna get the Biohazard and gonna replace the imaginary Antigua with an Alchemer, either a Nova Driver, Magma Driver, or Storm Driver. I need help on which one. I guess I'm not getting a Callahan, as the Blitz Needle apparantly is for the FSC win.

I'm probably gonna get an Ash of Angi, and/or a Voltaic Tempest, but I'm favoring the AoA a bit over the VT... And I'm not too sure about the Nitronome, I'm kinda leaning on the hate-it side since it only deals normal damage, and because the DBB is also quite alike to it, but convince me. And the Electron Vortex seems a little redundant if I already have a potentially Graviton Vortex bomb, but the shock status effect may be useful.

Your feedback on armor is a bit vague... Tell me specifically what I should upgrade my stuff to and what else I should get. What should I upgrade my Angelic set to? What about my Elemental Veil and Elemental Mantle?

My choice of shields pwn, apparantly, other than the DSS. Should I get any other shields? Volcanic Plate Shield, maybe?

Thank you for your time which has been wasted on this game and my question... Seriously, thank you.

only details remain

Your sword and gun plan is sound. All three of those alchemers are good. I'll let more informed people sort them out. Ash of Agni is great, really. But it has been argued that Voltaic Tempest does more damage against dense crowds, because shock has an area effect (that is, it damages non-shocked monsters nearby). And Voltaic Tempest is helpful in FSC, although it's not even remotely necessary, whereas Ash of Agni is not helpful at all.

People like Volcanic Plate Shield for Vanaduke and trojans in FSC. But really Grey Owlite is perfectly adequate, so I would not get VPS any time soon. I gave fairly detailed advice on sword armor above. For bomber armor, definitely read the Bombing Guide (and get Volcanic and/or Mad, probably). For gunner armor, you can figure it out as well as I can (and get Justifier and/or Nameless, probably).

My general advice to you is to work on being a good sworder (or gunner, or bomber) first. Get one set of equipment good enough, and learn it well enough, to be able to farm FSC, try a Shadow Lair, etc. Once you've done that, you can branch out into the other weapon styles, if you're still interested in doing so. Work deeply, then broadly.

Alchemers

Nova: Pure damage, no status infliction

Magma: Fire status. High dot damage

Cryo: Freezes, with damage upon thawing.

Shock: Shock status, lower dot damage, but aoe.

All status alchemers have a lower base damage than the Nova.

Electron is for non elemental resistant enemies, as they resist shadow damage of the graviton. And the shock can hold the enemies together in that tight ball to be dealt some more damage.

VPS is great in FSC, not better than owlite elsewhere. But as Bopp said, Owlite is already good enough for fsc.

You can basicaly get good at

You can basicaly get good at selecting gear by reading random wiki monster/armor/weapon pages. Be sure not to see everyting as an individual part, factor in weapons, armor, and monsters to your loadouts. Plenty of good suggestion threads out there.
On a side note, if you want the valkyrie helm, make dragon scale mail. You will be pleased when using this with a grand flourish on beasts or feinds.

"People like Volcanic Plate Shield for Vanaduke and trojans in FSC. But really Grey Owlite is perfectly adequate, so I would not get VPS any time soon. "
VPS takes celing tile hits and club swings muuch better on vannaduke. Leave the elemental defense to the armor, that's the part that actualy gets set on fire.

Choices, Choices...

So, for swords, I'll chose an Acheron, Divine Avenger, Final Flourish, Vile Striker (just in case), and either a Voltedge, Glacius, or a Combuster, but I'll make sense of that predicament later. I'm probably gonna get moar swords later, two for each kind of damage.

For the guns, Pulsar, Blitz Needle, Biohazard, and either a Nova Driver, a Hail Driver, or a Magma Driver. I'm probably gonna get more guns later, too, two for each kind of damage.

For bombs, Shivermist Buster, Graviton Vortex, Radiant Sun Shards, Dark Briar Barrage, Ash of Agni, and Electron Vortex. (Ooh, six...) And I might get a Nitronome, too.

The armor and helmets are a bit of a puzzle to me, funny how what one wears is so complicated, but I'll figure it out.

And the shields are going to be a Grey Owlite Shield, Dread Skelly Shield, Barbarous Thorn Shield, and maybe later a Volcanic Plate Shield. But I'm keeping my Drake Scale Shield, cause it looks aweshum.

You have all answered my question quite well, it's true, and I think I am set for now, I'm gonna be a pro. But if there are any other comments or suggestions, fire away.

You could do Divine veil,

You could do Divine veil (veil has fiend bonus - mantle does not), grey feather cloak, skolver coat and vog cub cap. You'll probably want more later but this will give you a lot of mix and match potential. A general purpose set (Divine veil, skolver), an elemental set (Vog cap, grey feather), sword set (Vog cub, Skolver).

In this set up I would do at least Armor of the Fallen from your angelic set so you can pair it with the Vog cub hat and have shadow/elemental and full fire resist for vana runs. And maybe do the Valkyrie Helm to have a neutral shadow set (neutralize the negative fire and fiend damage).

To finish off to have both a full piercing set and nice Shadow Snarby set might I suggest a Deadly Virulisk Mask. You can pair this with skolver coat and BTS to give you max sword bonus in jelly king runs (and med jelly bonus with gun/bomb). Then pair it with Armor of the Fallen to get you shadow/piercing and full poison for Shadow Snarby.

So in review this will leave you with general purpose, full piercing (max damage jellies), full elemental, full shadow (no neg), a sword set, a good FSC set, and a good Shadow Snarby set.

(As an aside radiant silvermail is an option for shadow snarby too if you want something to do with that drake scale)

"keeping my Drake Scale

"keeping my Drake Scale Shield"
Could make an omega shell. Equaly good in any situation due to high HP / low defense. Dosen't block statuses though, the reason why I prefer VPS.

On a side note, you seem quite ambitious Julia O.o... I'd slow down that wishlist >.>

Good Thinking!

Okay then, Realnight, I'll follow your quite good advice.

And, the Omega Shield looks a bit... not so good. I'll just get a Plate Shield to upgrade to a VPS, and sell the DSS. And, well, I'm just a Type A personality looking ahead, it's not that much, I'm not getting one of everything... Hahaha...

And I'm a guy, FYI.

Although, I have one, maybe two, questions

One, since in Tier 3 monsters only deal elemental, shadow, and piercing damage, wouldn't the VPS be ineffective, since it only blocks normal damage?

Two, will my lovely Drake/Dragon armor and shield (which has defense on elemental and piercing) do as well in an elemental depth as a normal and elemental armor and shield? And vice versa with a piercing situation?

let's just jump in here

"One, since in Tier 3 monsters only deal elemental, shadow, and piercing damage, wouldn't the VPS be ineffective, since it only blocks normal damage?"

In the shallow parts of the Clockworks (Stratum 1), monsters deal almost entirely normal damage. As you go deeper, monsters increasingly deal their preferred damage type (e.g., piercing for slimes). However, even on Stratum 6 there is a lot of normal damage being dealt. You always need normal armor, and normal protection on your shield.

As a side note

Shadow Lair Swarm Turrets deal massive normal damage. Evasion is best around those, but sometimes all you can do is block them to live. Normal defense should never be discarded, it shows up prominently everywhere, moreso than elemental as some of my friends say.

To answer your shield

To answer your shield question, no. As the others already have said, you will be vulnerable to the normal damage that is present in your elemental/piercing strat. Thus, the specialized shield will block a total of more damage than the drake scale.

Might not hold true for strats with high amounts of damage in both elemental and piercing.
