The gremlins who maintain the clockworks aren't that great with the magic that lubricates the constantly grinding worlds that make up the clockworks, and things tend to go horribly wrong. I suggest a new 'Ripped gate', that allows access to these fractured worlds.

The first thing a party notices are broken pipes that occasionally leak super compressed steam that deals status damage based on the elemental theme. Fire levels will deal super heated steam, poison levels leak toxins, and so on (similar to the haze-style bombs). Each level keeps it's original mechanism (Candlestick keeps still have candles and Grimalkins, for example). Any level at a particular depth is based on any level at the same depth of any active gate: level 15 could be Red Carpet Runaround, but depth 16 could be The Roarmulus Twins for example.

The party will not come across the usual beast, but rather gremlins and constructs attempting to destroy the fractured world, and undead monsters entering through the rips. The monsters behave according to the following rules:

A Gremlin would preferentially attack an Undead over a player.
A Construct would preferentially attack an Undead over a player.
An Undead would preferentially attack a Gremlin over a construct, and a construct over a player.
Each monster attacks dealing its usual damage (Constructs do split normal/elemental, for example) but have a chance of inflicting status: A fire-themed level would have Hotrodes, Slag walkers, Redwards, Red Rovers, and regular Gremlins who have a chance of inflicting fire. The probability (slight chance, strong chance) and intensity (weak status, strong status) increase at lower depths.

Crowns and heat would be given according to how much damage the players deal to a monster: If a player deals only one blow to an Undead, but Gremlins and Construct do the rest of the damage, the players would get very little compared to how much they'd get if they took it down themselves. This is to discourage players from waiting on the sides and letting the enemies take each other out.

So what do you think?

I'm not really big on this

I'm not really big on this idea; I find that shadow lairs do a good enough job of this.

Why make a specific gate for something like this. It's not so special. I mean, even regular clockworks alrady have some 'broken' rooms.
The only unique part is that 'zombies vs gremlins' part.

Just mix it there with random levels.

Stay a while and Listen!

This thread passed over my puny head......

How about we add gremlins vs fiends too? They are after all from the other dimension...

"broken pipes that

"broken pipes that occasionally leak" <-- That bit would be a cool new addition to all clockwork levels increasing the puzzle aspect of the game a little futher, there are big chunks of empty space on clockwork depths i.e the connecting bridges so they could be set up a bit like a maze and be on a timed pattern.

Gremlins don't use magic, the clockworks were made with technology and engineering.

Well Gremlins and Devilites have an alliance, so all the fiends they would be fighting are Greavers, Silkwings, and Trojans
