Nater-Tater, when I read through your worst weapons topic, my interest for the Iron Slug have already been crushed by the criticisms made in your topic.

Anyway, I already got myself the Magnus, but once I've upgraded it into Mega Magnus, should I upgrade it into Callahan or Iron Slug?

I have an iron slug I made ages ago, and it's fun to derp around with, but until it gets a buff it's really not practical for anything.

Judging by that thread, Iron Slug seems to be awful.

what are your other weapons in your loadout?

We can't give you personalized advice, without knowing how you'll pair this weapon with other weapons in a loadout. The main reason is that you want a mixture of damage types. (See the wiki page "Damage".) For example, if this gun is going to be your only gun in a loadout of swords, then it should probably be normal damage. But if this gun is paired with swords and guns of other non-normal types, then it should probably be piercing, to optimize damage against a wide variety of monsters.

If you have a Polaris or plan to get a Polaris, I'd say Callahan. It's pretty useful against Devilites.

If you don't plan to get Polaris, you could use Iron Slug to cancel turrets.

Bopp, I cannot agree.

If his plan was to use this as his only gun, the wisest course is not for him to craft this into an Iron Slug. The wisest course is for him to change his plan.

No weapon pairing justifies the Iron Slug as it currently exists. None. If he has no good use for a Callahan. . . well, write that 4* off as a sunk cost, and get something else entirely. Vend the Mega Magnus, or wait till a buff changes the situation.

actually quite so

Derpules, I don't want everyone to end up with the same set of equipment. In the olden days, there was a widespread sentiment that Blitz Needle was bad. (Maybe not universal, but I heard lots of people say it.) We need people to be trying these "bad" weapons and discovering their uses. So, when giving advice, I try to play along with what the advisee already has.

But ultimately I agree with you. If my mother played SK, I would steer her away from Iron Slug strongly.

Heh.

Succinctly put.

Re: trying new things, I think enough highly capable players have tried out this turkey by now that nothing much will be added to the community by another new player going down that path. I also note (now that I've re-read the OP) that the OP's gun is still at 3*, so now is a very good time to put those experiments on hold and come back to them when there's a chance they'll succeed. ;)

Hmm...

The Iron Slug may look cool at first glance, but never judge the gun by its appearance. I've already checked the wiki, to compare the two handguns, and here's what I've found out from the wiki:

= Callahan =
- Inflicts piercing, good for Beasts and Fiends.
- Good chance of dealing moderate Stun.
- Interrupts attacks and knock down enemies.

= Iron Slug =
- Inflicts normal, neutral against all monster types.
- Slightly longer range, small blast radius on direct impact.
- Interrupts attacks and knock down enemies.

As I compared, Callahan retains the same features found in the Magnus and Mega Magnus (inflicting stun and deals piercing). The Iron Slug, on the other hand, deals normal damage, making it neutral against all monster types, but the ability of inflicting stun was omitted. Also, when it comes to highest damage output between Callahan and Iron Slug (despite the similar damage outputs between the two), Callahan wins, with a highest damage output of 378, as compared to Iron Slug's highest damage output of 296. So, to conclude this...

You guys were right about the Iron Slug; It is and feels under-powered.

But still, the Magnus line has been outdone by other handguns, in terms of speed and/or damage output (most notably Iron Slug's rival, Callahan and the Pulsar-line). So... I've decided to go for Callahan.

Neither of which are very good, however callahan does have a damage type, and thus is able to deal "good" damage against some monsters, allowing it to fight beasts/fiends to a small degree. For functionality, I'd get an alchemer though. Easier to get UVs on, and better almost entirely.

Choose Callahan

Callahan dude, if you have the choice between the hardest hitting, coolest (sounding), status inflicting gun and the crap gun, you choose the Callahan.

The only time I use my slug

The only time I use my slug is when i need a knockdown to combo with valiance, or to stop rocket puppies from firing. Otherwise... basically every other gun. Even then the only time i use a valiance/slug loadout is when im heating 1-2 other weapons. I made it ages ago when the buff was announced. Here's to hoping!

I disagree with you all

I disagree with you all having normal damage can be very useful you can take on a series of monsters with the iron slug so in my opinien i would get the iron slug and i would try to use the so called bad weapons who knows maybe it will be like the blitz!

The problem is that Callahan

The problem is that Callahan outdamages the Slug against neutral type monsters (Gremlins/Undead) making it a better choice for 2/3 of the population. The only mobs the Slug would be better at taking out would be Constructs and Slimes, and will lose the ability to stun. Even in LD, the Callahan would be more preferable due to the stun alone.

Blitz was widely enough declared as bad because the regular attack is pretty meh-y and the charge tends to lead to vast amounts of redundant damage. It only really came into the light when it was used against Vana and allowing the damage to get put to use in a practical situation. The Slug has yet to show any side of itself that could be used in such a way, and is the reason for this fabled Slug Buff that'll likely never, ever, ever happen because the Devs are too busy nerfing bombers.
