PUZZLES!!!

Pleeeease! Good lord, this game reminds me of... I dunno, Legend of Zelda, this and that. Either way, PUZZLES. I have yet to see anything really puzzling, and I can understand not wanting to throw brain-teasing roadblocks in front of every player trying to "get to the bottom of things" but not having any real, worthwhile puzzles is just kind of stale. Some puzzling missions would be nice; some puzzles positioned a bit like the arenas.

Secret passages and such would be awesome too, if you could find a way to make them feel all secrety. o.o

Would +1. But,

Give some ideas of one in a level.

Ans not a short, 1/2 sentence one.

A good read.

This is half baked

I need more details. How will the maze work? Will there be enemies?

Most puzzles are interesting just once. After you find the secret it becomes trivial.
And in this game you'll be re-running levels over and over....

Also, the nature of the game (camera, linear maps, minimap) makes true hidden passages impossible.

Puzzles would be nice, but here's the thing: most "puzzles" you find in video games are really just you mashing buttons until something happens. In LoZ, this is exactly what I usually do. It works, and it works fast. I'm able to actually think through the puzzle, but why bother when I can just mashmashmash? And when you DON'T make puzzles easy - players become frustrated. And with most puzzles, you can only solve them once before they're boring. I played with a towers of hanoi toy when I was at my grandma's for part of this summer. The towers of hanoi is a puzzle that rewards logical, systematic thinking, and it is extremely easy to do if you actually think about it - but most people don't want to. They just play with the wooden pieces until they get bored and quit, what my little and older brothers did. I thought about it for about five minutes and solved it. I wasn't smarter than them, I'm just more interested in puzzles than either of my brothers are. This is why in most videogames truly difficult puzzles are placed off to the side, so that the people who just want something to play with in their hands can poke and push until everything snaps into place. And while I don't really want something to poke at, other people do. But there's another problem with puzzles - they can only be solved once. Once you have a clear system of thought, the vast majority of puzzles can be done with very little conscious thinking. This means that players will get tired of them quickly, and SK has very little content so it would get stale very fast. There are some excellent puzzle designs that don't get stale, but these are usually harder, and people don't want that. So yeah, if you want puzzles, I'd guess that puzzle pirates has some good ones, but they don't really belong in an adventure game as repetitive as SK.

[[True enough]]

As "wrong" as you are, you aren't incorrect. The idea of puzzles in an adventure game is by NO means original, but I can see why your thread failed from your method of speech and your attitude toward something as trivial as this (While I did explode in another thread several days ago, but that was in response to what I deem to be a severe moral obscenity).

And while I WAS perfectly satisfied (just as you likely were) to just sit back after dropping a note, the rest of you are generally correct. I want to defeat that. I want to see both simple and very difficult puzzles followed by adequate rewards, and I want to see them remain fun after completion... which means they need to be dynamic. Since Spiral Knights is a squad game with a guild system, teamwork is something that should be taken into consideration as well.

Hey...In FSC there's a hidden passage somewhere in the third level I think it was. >_> Take your time if you go through there, you might find a nice little surprise.

Make the arcade puzzles "rotate"

Each time you go, the puzzle changes.

Eaither every delve(even to that level) or when the gate dissapears and a new one takes the place.

Make each one innovative and would be a rare occurence for the same to pop up in the same gate and level.

Okay, I will! *Listens to

@Luguiru: Okay, I will! *Listens to Tool instead*

@Xeare: *Ears perk*

@Atrum: Pretty much. RNG/fractal puzzles would be pretty nice but I'd go easily just for keeping them diverse with the levels. I mean, Arcade levels are procedurally generated at some point, right? I for one have never run into the same place twice without missions, but I don't spam-play much. If I did I'd definitely find the levels themselves to be a chore to repeat, so a puzzle that's a chore to repeat would be status quo. Just make sure it only ever appears with that iteration. Something like that. Granted I'm thinking of addons to existing levels at this point.

Anyway, I'm sorry to say I haven't done a lot of research yet. x.x;

We need moar puzzles, like IMF and some of C42 (And I am surprised that no one mentioned them, but nvm.) I used to like IMF but its got boring after mastering it. We seriously need more puzzles like them. Really.

Please, would you kindly refrain from using ambiguous acronyms that are virtually impossible to google? C42 appears to be some chess opening... but that's all. IMF gets redirected to the International Monetary Fund, even when I add "game" or "puzzle."
