can you at LEAST give non-steam users the option of voice chat? I'm sick of playing with a bunch of deaf people and getting typekilled when they do something stupid!
OOO, if you aren't going to give us the option to block or even detect people who aren't using steam...
Dont join random parties. Steam is just a part of your problem.
The guy could be having game audio turned off and listen to rick astley or plain ignoring you anyways.
completely missing the point. People should be able to voice chat WITHOUT external programs. And linux is lame anyway :P
But...but....waaaaaaahh!!!!!
You....Linux is better then Windows by far! The hell! Look here! I can download SK in a minute while my Windows machine takes an hour! My Windows machine has been infected with two viruses so far, while my Linux one has never gotten any! I can install 50 things on Linux without needing to reboot once, while Windows would want you to reboot on every stinking program! You know how long that takes!?
OUT YOU !@!$ FREELOADER!!!!! D:<
(All things aside, Steam users can use external programs for voice chat or just say that they use voice chat.)
Oh, and congratz. That is the first time I have heard anyone saying Linux is bad. Thank you for showing me how much I get fired up by it. :P
Really, the one thing I'm ready to fight for is that I believe that out of Linux and Windows, Linux is better. I even fight about that a few times IRL! :I
Macs can do that too *
Also, uh. It would be neat to have "party with only Steam players" or something, similar to how we can have the option to only party with people from our same region. Though it's not always guaranteed that Steam players have their voice chat on. There are some times where I'd really rather not have some child screaming at me because they can't play. x_x Or, conversely, I often can't chat because of people around or whatever.
This is not a thread for OS fights, calm down and talk about what's at hand.
I'd be happy with some indicator that a player has voicechat - think of how XBL displays a speaker icon next to party members. Personally, it's never, ever been a problem; SK is not actually so reliant on teamwork that you have to co-ordinate actions on the fly, and the existence of Party Buttons means that it's simple to brief players via text chat if you want to. The only times I've ever, ever used voice chat in SK is when I've been introducing friends to the game, and then over Skype; it's just easier. I'd mute it if it was a default feature.
1st why are you getting type killed? You dont have to type and can do it inbetween deaths. I can type pretty fast so its never a problem for me.
2nd the population isnt big enough for you to make a steam only filter. Most players play on Kongregate, Armorgames, and the official website.
3rd I do hope we get voice chat for non steam users across the board ( or atleast the official websites players).
@Addy that's what the Mute option is for. Assuming it works X(
@autofire I've never met a single person that uses linux. And if it took you that long, I blame your hardware, not your software.
@kive Typing while you're dead kinda defeats the point of chat entirely. The reason I type is TEAMWORK. Mostly. Also voice chat makes the game more fun.
I didn't even know this game was on armorgames. Nothing against those sites, but SK is really too big and community-oriented to be on a site primarily designed for casual games.
And i have never encountered problems.
But it may be that I talk strageties before big rooms.
And no randoms.
As little dividing of the playerbase as possible please. F2P/P2P split is enough, this is not WoW at its peak, there are not 10 million active users.
On the other hand, yes to adding VIP to non-steam users and to PVP FOR GODS SAKE. SO USEFUL.
How about these:
- Option to toggle to only allow friends, guild members, or anyone to turn on/off the selected group(s); one overhead option, when toggled on allows you to select what you want
- Option to have your own mic connected for other players to hear
- Option for all party/team members to be able to hear your mic or all players (Lockdown and Blast Network)
- Sound check for other player mics (it makes a sound/noise which lasts a few seconds and has varying ranges of sound) so you can adjust volume
I have a mic myself but I never use it to speak, I just let my music play through. No one wants to hear me make silly noises. Hurka durka.
I do not use voice chat, nor do I want to use it.
More importantly, I don't have to. I don't have to voice chat with anyone, nor, do I have to listen to anyone else voice chatting.
I don't use Steam. When I play SK, I occasionally voice-chat with real-life friends through other software.
It would be nice to be given the option of voice-chatting through SK. However, I would like to be able to turn off both my talking and my hearing, as others have suggested.
The network architecture of SK might make voice chat difficult. Right now, I suspect that all clients communicate with the server, not with each other. Voice chat would be feasible only if the clients voice-chatted directly with each other, rather than routing all of that data through the server. This might require big changes to how SK is constructed. So don't hold your breath.
Nice idea for a feature, bad way to go about suggesting it, and I am not sure exactly how many people would actually need or want it.
Batabii - Then people complain about being muted and ugh. I'd rather not deal with it. Voice chat is something I don't do unless I have to I guess. x_x I suppose if it leaves me out of parties that's fine too.
(The whole "being a lady" thing is also a problem sometimes because wooowww people at differently when they find out I am a girl. I hate it. Without voice chat it just .. doesn't have to come up at all.)
@thenewteddy
way to be a team player
@addy
Why are you muting everyone you meet?
I'm for this, but I'm a bit confused on how the steam chat works. Is it only for clockworks/places with weapons out (lockdown, blast network and the training hall) or does it have a vicinity chat too?
This would be good to have because even though you could use an external program (mumble, vent, or maybe even yelling loudly at the other player somehow) it is good for random groups, or if you and whoever you want to talk to don't have the same voice program.
Voice chat currently ONLY works on actual clockworks depths.
Also there's too many different external programs out there, not only draining resources but requiring new accounts. Why bother when you can just use steam (or SK if they ever implement it) to chat AND play?
@batabii I don't have to play by your rules to be a team player, nor do you have to play by mine.
If OOO says otherwise they are welcome to post in this thread.
Else, you and anyone who thinks that I have to play your way to be a team player can just ignore me now so that we are never in the same team.
I am a steam player and I play with no sound whatsoever. I am the 1%.
Lol, I am assuming this is from the run where you dropped in on my HoI party thinking it was a Punkin King mission, and I died trying to explain to you that it wasn't DHF and you didn't realise what I was trying to tell until we reached the elevator? (Since, you posted this after the day that happened, I assume this :P)
I agree, that it can be really hard to type out in text in a mission like HoI with constantly respawning freezing/exploding souls, but for most of Spiral Knights, you can usually have the liberty and time to safely type stuff out. I usually wouldn't have risked getting type-killed but I didn't want you to end up wasting more energy on that run, so I considered it worth the death to type out and explain it to you, but you didn't get it until the end anyway. .-.
Anyway back to topic, I am not sure how many people actually use voice chat through Steam/external programs, but I am pretty sure they are a very minute minority. Maybe it's just my luck, but of my ~35 days of playtime, I haven't ever been on a run with any knight who voice chatted all the time. Though I will have to admit I have had to listen to great music a couple of times, but mostly people who even have Steam and a mic, don't use it. Including me, I am pretty sure there are a lot of people who don't prefer speaking out on a mic due to various reasons, mine probably being shy and english not being my first language.
I wonder how long you'd be left searching for parties if you only waited for people who'd have voice chat on....
..ya give them the option to voice chat.. and at least hear it..
@thenewteddy it's not a "rule", it's common courtesy. I'm not bossing people around in my matches, it's just basic communication and teamwork.
@lightningblitz this isn't about you at all.
Voice chatters ARE in the minority, and that's a problem. We need to change that and let everyone have the option talk to each other, not just steam users.
nonsteam users can voice chat trougth external program like mumble
please dont block nonsteam users, linux users canot use steam.
