The question that i am asking is, Does any one actually know the difference between say, the grand flourish and the dark thorn blade? The other ones are oblivious because they do stun or fire damage but what better or worse about a DTB compared to a GF.

Im asking because i have a twisted snarble barb and i've been raising it to 4* with the rest of my stuff.

Absolutely nothing other than

Absolutely nothing other than the color and charge attacks. Flourish has a fairly powerful 3-hit lunge, while Thorn Blade has a strong slash, followed by a short-range cone of thorns and a phantasmal Snarbolax on the 5*.

5-star versions

Many people know the differences among the 5-star versions of those swords. My comparison is here: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/User:Jdavis/Swords#Piercing_Swords

Final Flourish - damage done to a small, concentrated area (standard three-swing attack, except somewhat faster and with more damage to each swing/poke)
Barbarous Thorn Blade - damage done to a wider area (single slash and series of thorns swung outwards in an arc, the thorns counting as projectiles and causing any reactions monsters may have)

The charge of Barbarous Thorn Blade is less risky to use than that of Final Flourish, since its animation is shorter and it covers a wide area. However, the Final Flourish charge can easily finish off a Trojan, and is good against a tightly-clustered group of vacuumed enemies (e.g. wolvers dragged by a Graviton Vortex). It's mainly a matter of preference, really; I like the BTB better, but that is because of a) the area-wide charge making it easy to hit Recons in PvP and b) the fact that it doesn't trail sparkly pixie dust like the FF, which I cannot take seriously.

specular highlight

The FF trails a specular highlight, not pixie dust. The idea is that the tip of the sword is so shiny, that the reflected light is too intense for the camera/retina you're perceiving it with, and the camera/retina suffers a temporary "burn". It's nicely done I think.
