Some small questions

About a year ago, I started playing Spiral Knights. Waaaaay before Missions came out. And, of course, I bought all my Cobalt stuff, Calibur and Autogun...
One year later after pretty much well abandoning Spiral Knights, I come back to find that... My gear is practically worthless due to the new Mission system.

So, I'm in need of a new set of armor and weaponry, and I have no idea where to start. I feel I should try and get some stuff to protect from Elemental things (mainly ice, that's my big weakness), but still look fashionable (Blizzbreaker shield looks nice ;) ). But I don't want to skimp on basic protection, or damage. I am particularly fond of the gear of the two yellow knights on the advertisement for one of the Danger missions, but I know they are fairly weak.

So, any recommendations?

To start, your gear is not

To start, your gear is not worthless. The gear you have is more or less the standard starter gear most knights get (although it's bad, but that's another subject).

For armors, the basic recommendation is to get the armor which is going to boost your role : swordsmen get wolver(2*)/dusker(3*), gunners get gunslinger(3*), bombers get Spiral Demo(2*)/Fused Demo(3*), then upgrade that. For each, you have to choose a branch at the 5*, but that's for another discussion.

That said, if you really need elemental protection, the Magic set is good, but doesn't include freeze protection. I don't know to which armor you refer by the danger mission advertisement.

The Recon Armor thing doesn't matter. I didn't know at the time you couldn't get it xD
What would be a good mix between bomber and swordsman?

As I recently advised on

As I recently advised on another thread, going for bombs first is probably not a good idea, since they only reach their real effectiveness at 5*.

If you still want to mix both bomber and swordsman, there is no gear I would advise to a beginner which really compliment both, so the next best bet is to take one swordsman part (wolver line) and one bomber part (spiral demo line). Which you get as armor/helm is not relevant since both parts have the same stats for both slots.

If you want advices on weapons, you will need to provide more information : how much weapon slots do you plan to have, and in that how many weapons of each type ? Do you want just one go-to weapon for each slots or do you plan to make several to be more effective in every situations by switching gear ? Everything else you feel important to mention can be a deciding factor too (for example a preference towards slow or fast swords, status or damage bomb etc...)

some remarks

Your gear is not worthless, but it isn't great either. Missions didn't make your gear bad. Your Cobalt armor and Calibur sword were weak long before missions were introduced. On the other hand, your Autogun upgrades to Blitz Needle, which is one of the most beloved weapons in the game.

You seem to be confusing damage types with statuses (or maybe you just misspoke). Read those wiki pages to learn them better. For example, freeze has nothing to do with elemental damage. There are monsters that inflict piercing and freeze, and there are monsters that inflict shadow and freeze.

In your second post, you told us a key piece of information, that we can use to help you: You want to use swords and bombs. Consider reading or skimming my detailed sword guide. The section on Mixing Weapon Types applies to you. You'll want either sworder armor (covered in the armor section), or bomber armor (see the Bombing Guide on the wiki), or a mix. The rest of my guide applies, when you have to choose your sword.
