Hey all pretty new to this game, just got to level 5 and struggling a bit with the base gear you get from the mission rewards so my partner and I are starting to grab some gear from the AH we also bought the starter pack so we have some energy.

We are stuck on some level 5-2 missions against what I think is shadow and freeze enemies so we are building up a 3 star armour set before we go back and are hoping to have a set for each type of zone as it appears they are generally set up in sections thing is how you do you tell from the monitors when doing arcade etc what types of beasts are in what zone (and as a result from there what armour to use) so much armour and it's really confusing atm.

Thanks!

The icons are all (more or

The icons are all (more or less) unique to a certain type of enemy theme, but it's easier to look at the name of levels to tell you what's there. Wolver Den, Gremlin Grounds, Mechanised Mile, Grim Gallery etc, all give a clue as to what enemy will predominately reside there.

Right now I presume you won't be able to afford multiple sets of armour to switch around in each set, and you really don't want to be spending all your profit on many 3/4* sets when you need to be saving up for 5*, so I'd just say to not worry about it as much and make sure that whatever you're using has at least some normal def/attack so that it works everywhere, so you're never caught offguard.

The "standard" damage sets are often used most by new players as it boost their offensive capabilities while giving solid normal defence. These would be Wolver for swords, Gunslinger for gunners and Demo for bombers.

Specialised defences and armour sets are a bit too niche for the stage you're at right now as you'll find yourself not using them enough to justify the costs; you may look into them more later, but for now you just want one strong set of armour to run you everywhere and a small variety of weapons.

The wiki for SK is very good,

The wiki for SK is very good, as MMO wikis go, and contains most of the basic information that you could ever need to get started in the game.

As for damage tables for each monster type:

I agree with Darkbrady that you should read the wiki page on Damage. This is the single most important rule of Spiral Knights to understand. (After that, read the page on Status Effects. Always keep damage and status effects distinct in your mind.) Also, as you go through the missions, make sure to read all of the information offered. A lot of the "talking missions" exist to teach you these rules.

To learn how to decipher the icons that appear on gate maps and gate monitors, read this: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Gate#Level_Icons.

In the deep parts of the Clockworks, even the toughest armors let through lots of damage. To stay alive, you must dodge, shield, maneuver, and kill quickly. At that point, most players go for armor that gives offensive bonuses, even at the expense of a little defense. This is why Darkbrady suggested the Wolver (swords), Gunslinger (handguns), and Demo (bombs) armor lines.

For us to give you more specific advice, we'd have to know your "character class" --- sworder, gunner, bomber, mixed gunner/sworder, etc.
