Several people, including me, have reported that performance drops are happening every 5-8 seconds. I opened task manager and found out that the game is using up over 750,000 K of memory and half of my CPU.

I'm using Windows 7 64 Bit. Not sure about anyone else, but this needs to be addressed quickly before someone's game crashes because of the performance drop.

Edit: It's been fixed! Thanks Helios!

Windows 64-bit uses quite a lot of memory for work, and it is possible that SK is running on 64-bit java too. By using 64-bit, the game is programmed to dedicate more RAM to it, therefore taking up more RAM. If you find the game using too much memory, switch to 32 bit java, or switch to windows 32-bit mode.

0.75 GB of RAM is too much for Windows 64-bit? You ought to have at least 8GB of RAM if you were using 64-bit.

Yet again, it could be badly optimized for 64-bit as always. I don't really know.

The game always had weak performance for me. As a player who is able to run Battlefield 4 on max settings I find it honesty unacceptable that I can't max this game out without getting massive framerate drops during certain scenarios. Though yea I've also been getting the lagspikes per few seconds even on my gaming PC with this patch. I don't know what happened but this isn't the first time I've had this issue.

This game is just horribly optimized as a whole. Though yea, this patch made it even worse.

The game decided to give me the lagspikes during Torto mission just now, instantly sent a rage-F2 to OOO. Died numerous times due the spikes. CPU usage was 50%+ by Java. Memory usage 1.2 gigs. Massive lagspikes every 1-3 seconds. During the battle it ended up going to 2-3 lagspikes EACH SECOND. Desktop and anything outside the client was unaffected. It was just the client that went full r***rd.

GJ.

If the theory don't fit the facts, wear a pair of 3D glasses.

I, myself, actually found out SK was using over a million KB of memory after playing right when I finished updating. Yes, I'm not kidding, and I run this off a laptop with 2 GB of memory. I end up restarting the game as soon as I start have random stops. Hopefully, Three Rings will fix this soon.

Laggity Laggity

My game freezes every three to eight seconds. I have a good 8 gigs of ram, Intel i5 processor, and a 2 gigabyte graphics card. Spiral Knights now laggs more than Planetside 2 on this computer. Three Rings needs to get on this now.

I don't want to sound bad nor evil, but I haven't suffered this "performance drops". Today I played for about 7 hours and never freezed (at least not more than usual).

Windows 7 32 bits
AMD Phenom II
Onboard Graphics: AMD 760G, 256 MB
3,75 GB RAM
(Total RAM:4 GB)

Might play again and see if I overlooked something.

Even though this is java, on

Even though this is java, on a 64bit machine, why is it doing it now then? its not java, its OOO's patch, something they did, messed up the game causing graphical errors, and intense lag spikes.

That or the patch messed up the client, and requires a reinstall.

Ok, played a T3 run in the Sapphire Bishop gate. Only lagged a bit on a Candlekeep level (FPS drop, that's normal) and when 148249 Slag Walkers were on screen. Aside for that, everything was normal. The run took 1 1/2 hours, approximately.

This is weird, I'm the one who complains about high latency and such, and now that everyone is affected, I'm not! What is this nonsense?

I can confirm that removing

I can confirm that removing 64-bit java from my computer and installing 32-bit version of Java seems to have resolved this issue. Went from huge lag spikes every 5 seconds, which made the game unplayable, to no issues. Only reason I had 64-bit Java was to play Minecraft I don't play Minecraft much anymore so I don't really need 64-bit java.

You can remove 64-bit Java off your computer (Windows) from Control Panel->Uninstall a Program.

Greetings,

Unfortunately changing around your Java version will not make a difference in this case, this has been reproduced across multiple versions. This also isn't anything related to the server or network connectivity. However, depending on how you play it's possible that you may never see this problem.

Thankfully there isn't much to worry about as this bug has been squashed for the next scheduled update. As a temporary work-around you can kill java.exe in the Task Manager and re-launch the game to pick up where you left off. By killing the game in this manner the server will treat it as a disconnect, allowing you to log straight back in to where you left off. This act of re-clienting will restore the game to its normal state for a while. If you do this before starting the Tortodrone Mission, or any other mission, you should be able to play the entire mission uninterrupted by the lag events you're observing.

This workaround sadly doesn't work on Windows 8. Since it will just safe-close (or whatever it's called) the game causing you to log off. You can use airplane-mode though to disable your wi-fi making you disconnect from the game. The killing method from taskmanager also has its risks though. Like the login freezing issue that has persisted for years: When your body (knight) is in for example KoA/FSC during disconnection often when trying to log back in it will fail several times. What happens is that the client will freeze at the login screen or loading screen and you will have to end the task since it won't budge at all.

The only way to fix this issue is with luck (chance is very slim for you to get back into the game if you encounter this issue, you'll have to end task and reopen several times to try your luck getting in the game) OR you'll have to wait for 15 minutes till the game autokicks your body from the server OR your body has to reach Haven. When your body is logged off from the server completely then you will be able to log in without freezing the latter will also fix the issue as you will be able to log in normally.

I've had this issue happen to me a year and 2 years ago for several times. Now this issue has yet happened again yesterday and the day before that. It happened various times on both my laptop and my gaming PC. Yesterday it happened during the Tortodrone Event mission, as I was unable to log-in due to getting a frozen client in the loading screen and my friends almost ended up submitting a support request before finally luck was with me after 10+ tries. The day before yesterday I had the issue occur in FSC where I was unable to join back into the game after I lost connection to the internet. Pressing login made the client freeze and I had to kill the task, logging in afterwards had same results and I had to wait for the server to kick my body from it.

This issue occured to my friends too these past days as they were unable to log back in and had to wait for the server to kick them or for us to reach Haven. Due to my experience with this issue I was able to help them step by step.

The-Dragon-Child,

Please use the Details tab of the new Task Manager to select and kill the Java process. It has the same function as the Processes tab in previous versions of Windows. Re-connecting to a lost session often takes longer to load from the log in screen since the game has yet to cache any commonly used assets or scenes. A failed re-connect usually indicates there are other issues preventing ideal game performance, which is best handled on a case-by-case basis.

Ah thx Helios

I didn't notice the details tab. I'm honestly feeling embarrassed now that I didn't figure that out myself as I work a lot with computers (I'm fairly new to Windows 8 though). Though I have to say the process tab and details tab work very similar since they both close the processes instantly for me.

The failed reconnects have been happening to me very often though. The only place where I am able to connect 100% without fail is Haven. Missions tend to fail and freeze up the client. (Though not all missions, FSC has a rate of almost 100% failure to reconnect) Doesn't matter if you wait 1 minute or 15 minutes for the freeze to go away it will stay there until you kill the process. Like I also said this has been happening to me for a long time (Although randomly) and on various PCs, and also to my friends.

Btw. Same applies to using friend joining through steam. I figured this out a few days ago, although I almost forgot about it. If that friend is in FSC and you use the "Join game" function through Steam (So when you start up the game it instantly joins that instance) it will cause the login freezing issue.

Greetings,

Not a worry with the Windows 8 thing, there's a bit of musical chairs going on when trying to find familiar functions. It's interesting when updating documentation.

I'll poke at the FSC reconnects and see if I can reproduce what you're observing. I'll also have a look at the "Join Game" option in Steam, it's not an option I frequent or see many comments about.

Im having the exact same thing happening to me now but at "The Return of Ur". I used taskmanager to kill my process since I was suffering from freezing issues. Though now I cannot get into the game anymore as it will freeze at the login screen.

Process: java.exe [not responding] Been waiting for 10 minutes for it to respond to no avail.
Memory usage: ~660MB
CPU usage: 83-88%

Currently using my laptop:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
i5-3210m
4GB RAM
nVidia 610m

Using the Steam client with the most recent Java 64-bit updated (Version 7 Update 51). Eventually got kicked to Haven after they finished the depth and am now able to log in.

Compliments to you btw Helios, now that I see how fast I get reactions about the issues I feel kind of bad that I didn't report these a long time ago. (I love to beta test games or go on a bug/glitch/exploit hunt and report the issues as I used to do that for many games, Warframe as example.)
