Metal lockboxes are incredibly rare / non-existent now

I'm hearing lots of reports that people have stopped receiving metal lockboxes. I don't think I've received a single one while spike farming or running fsc, when I used to be receiving a nice trickle of them.

It seems like this previous patch is completely untrue now, and there is some new hidden mechanic put in place preventing lockbox drops: "Fixed issues with how metal lockbox were awarding. All box drops chances should be even across the board for all knights regardless of age, activity, etc. Fair and square; even-steven."

This is disappointing because it finally seemed like people had a chance to obtain mirrored lockbox exclusive eyes and height modifiers. I never understood why these were so rare in the first place.

What's going on here? It would be nice to hear from the GMs on this.

I concur

I was just thinking about this last night. I believe it’s been many months since I last got a box.
That said, I do have a number of unopened lockboxes in my inventory from the past. I would appreciate if we knew all the technical details such as whether the amount in your inventory still affects it.

I got a silver pretty recently, actually, and sold it on the AH in the last couple of days - I'd have to check to find exactly when. They are still dropping naturally in the wheel but I imagine the rates have been adjusted slightly because of how suddenly the economy was saturated with them.

I've also heard several

I've also heard several reports myself of players not getting boxes.

"Fixed issues with how metal lockbox were awarding. All box drops chances should be even across the board for all knights regardless of age, activity, etc. Fair and square; even-steven."

When this patch dropped I had gotten around 2-3 boxes just running vana. Since then I haven't received a single box since.

rates are consistently low

ive gotten one box since the patch, yeah

previously drop rates were increased under certain circumstances, so some accounts would rarely get boxes while others would consistently get several; i figure that the drop rate is now consistently low for everyone rather than consistently high for everyone

the rates

the previous "even-steven" rates were 2.23% for metal, with another 2.23% if you hit a lockbox for it to be mirrored. I think what happened was too many were dropping so they either: added a cap, lowered rates extremely, or unintentionally added another 2.23% on top so metals are as rare as mirrored were. My suggestion is to make them a flat 1% rate with mirrored being 2% if the lockbox % is hit, that way you still get a decent amount but not as crazy as it was at the start of the month with 5 pages of lockboxes on the AH. But over all just more transparency, nothing is worse than a hidden change after saying one thing then secretly changing it 1 week later @GH.

Ive done some testing

Ive been testing the lockbox drop changes ever since they updated the logic for dropping.

Before the changes it was as follows:
For every 2 lockboxes you opened, you basically got a guaranteed one. This was on top of a very tiny chance of getting one each level completion. This was a known mechanic that stayed that way for years.

Immediately after the update, it was a flat 2ish % chance, 2.23% to be exact, for a normal metal lockbox, and something like 5% of that to roll a mirrored. HOWEVER: people abused the fuck out of this. There were multiple people banned for using a cheat that automatically moved thier character to complete Beyond the Axes of Evil for insanely fast level completions. GH then promptly changed the lockbox rates to what they are now. And heres my testing.

Over the course of the last month, ive completed something like 2000 levels. Ive also opened around 20-30 silver lockboxes, and about 10 steel lockboxes. One would assume ive gotten quite a few lockboxes from the level completions but no.

I got a single lockbox. Across 2000 prize wheel rolls, I got a single box. Thats nowhere close to the advertised 2.23% chance, and MANY standard deviations away from the mean.

So yeah, somethings up. Some people have emailed GH, and they let slip there is a new mechanic for determining lockbox drops that maybe the community hasnt figured out yet, but ive tried everything to possibly increase chances. In classic GH fashion, they wont reply to this thread, they wont address this issue, and a lockbox mechanic that literally is for even OBTAINING a lockbox to then again GAMBLE will go silent.

The Most Annoying Part

They kept the Prize Wheel thing where it will always land super close to the Lockbox, but never on it.

It's been a thing for years, and it was intentionally added to manipulate players into playing for longer times without having an actual payout. Mind you, this has been a thing long before Gray Haven started working on the game, but it still bothers me a bit that even after all of these years it is still in the game.

It just kind of feels like teasing now. Like I know it wont get any closer the more I play, it's like the game is telling me "look what you could have got instead."

I've been thinking about this thread a little bit, and decided to start looking at community data - especially Mergu-Md's forge box data, but also taking the time to go through my old discord messages to note when I've mentioned getting box drops.

I haven't been recordkeeping thoroughly, but the rates definitely feel down from where they were. I am still occasionally *getting* boxes, but not as frequently. I definitely got the most immediately after the change.

Witelite is completely correct with their numbers, too. At those rates you would expect that little over 50% of players who run 31 floors would earn at least one lockbox. After 2000 floors, the numbers work out such that 99% of players who do that could expect around 30 lockboxes. Matter of fact, the probability of getting at least 10 boxes is so high that the calculator I am using to double check this outputs p=1, indicating that this "Almost Always" happens (mathematical sense, at least).

Even forge boxes feel around 10x less frequent for the same time investment. Without a much larger dataset this sort of ends up being speculative anyway, but from where I'm sitting, it's pretty good speculation.

(Shoutouts to Mergu-Md for sharing his forge box data with me yet again, btw, that's been very valuable. Thanks, chief.)

Update as of today; I was

Update as of today; I was running Amber Falcon T3 for recipes for a friend - very easy gate to run through quickly - and did 17 runs (68 floors) in an hour or so, earning three steel lockboxes during my run. That's somewhere in the 4 percent range, so if anyone's building a dataset, you can add that.

thanks, but

It's nice that you report your story, so that we know that such things are possible.

But for the purposes of building an actual data set, you need to decide, before running the 68 floors, that you will report your number of lock boxes, no matter how many. Did you? If you instead decide after the fact, because you got a nice number of lockboxes, then you are biasing the data set toward positive results.

Maybe you weren't going for anything so serious, but I thought I'd raise this issue, in case any readers out there really are collecting data.

That is actually very relevant, yes, it doesn't reflect the enormous drought between my last post and today. I can't give good estimates on how many floors I've completed between then and now and in comparison. I was not, however, looking for lockboxes. I was looking for recipes and the lockboxes came anomalously frequently, and that reminded me of this post. As a matter of fact after writing that last reply, I recieved **a fifth** in firestorm citadel.

On reflection? At worst this might imply a *reversion* of changes because of how unusual the frequency is in comparison. I usually run FSC so my best guess is that it could have been a couple hundred floors of nothing, but that's pure speculation.

if it's a reversion

If it's a reversion, then have you opened any lockboxes recently? Before the recent reforms, people who opened lockboxes were dramatically more likely to get new lockboxes, than were people like me, who never open them. Just curious.

(I keep pretty careful records. I have received 8 lockboxes in 15 years of playing nearly daily. Maybe I've missed a couple, but even then my rate is waaaay under 1% of prize wheel rolls.)

No, but I do recall that there were rules about receiving a set amount per month regardless of whether keys were used - and that using a key raised this limit for a period of time. I might be misremembering or misunderstanding; I have to admit I don't know enough of the specifics to be more useful and mostly wanted to make it as clear as possible that there are a lot more runs before this I failed to account for and wanted to clarify to anyone bystanding that you're dead-on to call it low-quality data, because I just haven't been recordkeeping that extensively. What I have is about as good as anecdote, ultimately.

I play this game quite a bit, daily, and to date I have received a single lockbox this month so far. This is atrocious.

well is it?

Well, given that I receive approximately one lockbox every two years (post #12 above), that experience doesn't seem atrocious to me. :P
