Absolutely! Spiral Knights has a great deal of skill involved in playing it well, and I'm excited to play vs other people (at least on the relatively lag-free days). Improved latency would encourage me to dive in even deeper.

I would appreciate PvP with 2 scales, small duel-scale PvP with a more casual focus, where it would be all about individual skill, and larger-scale maps that would allow full guilds to strut their tactical prowess. The most important thing would be to make sure maps were balanced as to allow all weapon types to compete equally (as in a simple open arena, bombs would be near-impossible to charge).

I enjoy Starcraft II, Super Smash Bros, and League of Legends, all for different reasons.

Ragnarok pvp is fine, Ragnarok war of emperium is awesome! I like wow´s battleground too.

Bomberman-style PVP?? The unbreakable boxes already prevent damage through them so it is pretty much the same 'single file' bomb except for visuals if you make the map in a similar style.

also, how about a DotA style game? 2 teams, mobs go fight each other through a couple of lanes, either some flag to capture in the opposite base or a boss mob to kill...

From someone who's favorite genre of game is defined by Street Fighter, I'd like to address this one question:

There's nothing stopping you from offering two separate modes: one that is more interesting to casual players, and another that is more interesting to the hardcore players. Something that relies on very little randomness that's almost entirely a competition of direct player skill is good for players who are definitely looking to pit themselves and their skills in a hardcore way. Likewise, a mode that is completely zany and hilarious will be well received by the casual players, and will get a lot of interest from the hardcore players as well as a way to let off steam.

The hardcore players will pitch more money into the game and work harder to make themselves as possibly optimal when it comes to competing in the hardcore mode as they can, and there's nothing stopping you from making a separate casual mode that will let these same players compete against the casual players without letting their much, much better equipment give them a completely insurmountable advantage.

There's ways to please both parties here and it'd be a fantastic idea to address everyone's needs and interests, and I think it would be very easy for you to simply implement two separate modes -- and it'd be great for the community and game interest altogether.

I think it should always be same star vs same star when picking random fight. Against friends however you should be able to do and adjust whatever you want.

For a game like Spiral Knights something more casual would be better, I think. I think there should be teams and duels and maybe some other game types (King of the hill, capture the flag, etc). Teams should be 4v4 matches in large maze like maps where the knights have to navigate the area and fight each other till one team is left standing. Duels (1v1) should be in a smaller map like the arena's in the clockworks. All the game types should be filled with other obstacles too, like blocks, floor traps and different types of jars.

Also, I think there should be tokens received for completing PvP games, and unique equipment and weapons that you can buy with them.

I play a lot of competitive games - Call of Duty, Assassin's creed, Gears of War. I think I still prefer the more simple and fun little competitive games, however, like Worms, or bomberman.

I would love PvP, but I can't imagine it being very hardcore in this game: it's just too unbalanced* ; / I'm sure that would change over time, but for any kind of rewards it would be unfair to really make things TOO competitive.

That said, a separate "no cost, no reward" section for simple dueling would be neat.

Speaking of cost and reward, my only thing with PvP is that I think making it cost energy would be a terrible idea, even if it rewarded crowns somehow. Make it cost crowns to participate, even if more crowns are the reward (maybe in some kind of pot system where two duelers pay 100/200/300/400/500 crowns and whoever wins gets the other person's payment (- a 10% fee or something). This could also work with team "Capture the Crystal" play too, with each player on each team paying into the pot and the winning team getting the other team's share.

It would of course also have to balance players into gear brackets: 1-2* gear in one, 3-4* gear in another, 5* gear on its own (it can't follow the dungeon tier divisions of 0-1, 2-3, 4-5 because the difference between 2* and 3* gear is phenomenally large compared to any other jump, and the 2-3* bracket would be dominated by "twinks" in full 3* gear).

Overall though, can't wait to see it.

*Incase anyone's wondering what balance issues I'm referring to, here's just a few:

-All gear that gives bonus damage to a certain type of enemy would be undervalued (undead, fiend, beast... essentially a wasted bonus).
-All gear that gives status resistance to things no player-used weapons apply would be undervalued (sleep (none), poison (2 weapons, 1 a bomb), shock (1 gun, no 5* sword or bomb that does it))
-Freeze would be an OP mechanic, especially with the Shivermist in its current incarnation. Some kind of Diminishing Return on status effects would be warranted.
-Swords would dominate completely: successful gunslingers would be few and far between when three seconds of swordswipes can do more damage than 15 seconds of blasting away, slowed or immobilized all the while, and unable to block during sprays (autogun line) or reloads.

Curse would be an interesting inversion of the above: Only Faust line does it, but it's such an oft-used weapon that many would probably find curse-resistant gear necessary, which might devalue it in return. That's one of the more interesting dynamics though.

Also, costume gear would have to be disabled for PvP to make any kind of judgement fair, and it might be necessary to limit weapon/trinket slot use (or have a separate tier for people who have any unlocked).

If PVP did come out, than me and my friend would head over there and battle each other to see who wins!! Besides, the training room is fun but there needs to be some other way for other players to play against each other if they wanted to. I like almost any kind of PVP and if there was a kind of PVP choice, like team games or individual players, then it would add on to the fun that all the players might have while in it. But all in all, I would love it if PVP did come out.

Nick! Nick!! I love you for making this awesome-sauce mmo, Spiral Knights. I am a Tier 3, Lord Duke veteran/still exploring undiscovered depths since i've been a member for a month now. In my opinion,(and majority of player's), PvP would be a great feature to add to Spiral Knights. Guild battles, capture the flag, players vs players in a battle royale, popular video games like halo and call of duty are favored by nearly everyone that games because of their epic story and awesome online matches. I'm not sure what type of PvP should go for SK since it's a bit different then first person shooters. Probably themes like World of Warcraft. But either way PvP would be awesum!! Can you guys also add a BBS for guilds? Like a forum in-game so we can keep track of guild events and etc. Most Spiral Knight veterans have left since there's not much else to do in SK and the moral of powering gates doesn't appeal too much to them. PvP would really help lighten the load of loosing the lust of SK on them. =‿=

PvP must be accessible by anyone, easy to pick up and fun to play. Going with the statement mentioned, I am strongly against any form of hardcore elitist interaction. Things that promote rage like AoS-format gameplay should be eliminated and things that promote go-solo rambo god type players should also be discouraged.

While its nice to have cooperative centric games, its NOT fun when someone starts to rage at the other guys. Oh and, screw guild battles that encourage the whole guild vs guild drama.

How about you get to "rent" whatever gear you want, for free, for the match duration?

You pay a 100cr fee to join a Capture the Crystal battle. On match setup, everyone gets to select a full set of their choice (there would be 1*-5* brackets), for no added charge.

That way, you remove the inherent unbalancing mechanics of PvE gear, and players get to test cool weapons before they actually purchase them for their PvE runs. You may call it The Skylark Virtual Battle Simulator. How's that for the "casual" PvP side?

The hardcore PvP could involve guild battles on private instances of Haven, Moorcroft and Emberlight; if a guild loses all 3 battles, they get to defend their Guild Hall, with reinforced Gun Puppy and Mecha Knight defenses.

PvP would be amazing! Some thoughts:

I don't care if there are PvE rewards (equipment) for doing PvP... although it would be nice to have a ladder system and perhaps PvP rewards (such as costume outfits only obtainable through PvP)

If a ladder is made, I would like the option of both ranked and unranked matches.
Also, the possibility (but not requirement) of equipment homogenization for specific matches, so all players choose from a limited selection of balanced equipment pieces for their match. Alternatively, give players an equipment score based on what they are wearing (this would probably be tough to balance, though) and match similar players.

PvP Tournaments!! (for teams or single player)

I played Super Smash Brothers Brawl competitively, and the game might make a good reference because it appeals to both casual and competitive players.

I have been thinking about this for a while. First off, my favorite game to play on a competitive level is Super Smash Bros Brawl. Since it is not a combo based fighter with a direction influenced jump and move pattern, it makes it so you don't have to have extraordinary reflexes to play and the normal person can get good at it.

Now onto this game

PvP and PvE should be separated. PVE with it's lifebars is an amazing idea. When considering PvP, you should consider the fact that life bars are not going to work. Armors should be converted to Hp during PvP along with your character.

Now, Armor for PvP armors should not be valid for PvE and should be leveled on a point system based on how well you play in PvP. Similer like WoWs honor system.

Playing players should be based on Point Rank. If you have someone new to the PvP system, you don't want them going up against an experienced PvP player.

When designing armors, to create diversity, balance on weapons and armors should be created to give equal chance and uniqueness. I absolutely hate when there is one set of armor and weapons that dominate everything. It's like an easy button. You want someone with skill to be able to pick his own set and play well instead of just picking the op set. Balance in weapons and armor will be the most important part of a PvP system.

Now for how armors and weapons are bought and made, Vendors in the PvP should sell based on rank. Switching recipes only once a day at midnight IGT. I have to do more thinking to this last concept but this is how it should be

Pretty much Separate PvP armor from PvE armors (or convert to hp for PvP). A PvP rank system should be in order to promote fairness. A strategic metagame for PvP should be in place with Balanced weapons and gears. And for the love of god, don't make it wicked difficult to upgrade. I don't know how CR and CE will fit into these.

A problem I do see with my idea is the Cr Ce. If you keep the alching the same way, you need to work twice as hard in the clockworks to get the crs needed to upgrade. And as we all know, many people arent willing to pay money to upgrade buy CE. I have hypothesized a sloppy solution to this though. The solution is a membership. Not make everyone pay to play, but only the people who want it. In the P2P version, Ce cost of crafting should be cut inhalf, and .5 more Cr for every 1 Cr should be obtained from drops.
It's sloppy but still a solution. I'd say a 5-10 dollar monthly membership fee wouldn't be to bad. And I'd be the first to sign up. Thank you for listening.

If you have corrections on this, I would love to read them. Pretty much the only thing I care about in PvP is balance. I don't want to lose to some Scrub player because he has the best and no skill.

Are there going to be "level restrictions"? Or can I bring in my Vitasuit+Proto Shield+Proto Sword+Proto Gun dude against a Skolver set guy?

Maybe creating some values for each item when PVPing would be interesting.

Say I have the guy I just described above. Vitasuit gives me 1 point, Proto shield gives me 1 point, Proto sword gives me 1 point and Proto gun gives me another. Lets say I have the noob cap which gives me 1 more point. If we were to sum it all up, I would be a Level 5 PVPer. And so it goes.

And then having different PVP difficulties based on the Player's PVP level would be cool. For instance, Levels 10 to 15; 16 to 20; 21 to 25; and on.

Because its all about micro! It doesnt matter if I got the best gear. I might as well get pawned by a more experienced player.

I'd enjoy casual PVP, especially no-stakes PVP integrated into dungeon content - like say an arena that split up your party, and sent confetti down on whichever pair finished their fight first, and then let them join the other one. (A "Divide and Conquer" floor? Though it'd probably be mixed in with a more usual arena / dungeon content.) Or a "Gatecrashers" floor that let you match yourself up against another party that was also visiting that floor, competing to clear it faster and possibly being matched up against them in an arena.

Basically, I can't imagine myself going out of my way to put a PVP group together, but I think it'd be fun and social if a dash of PVP showed up in our PVE from time to time, without punishing anyone if they end up being bad at it. (So a PVP floor against another party would need to act as a normal floor if you didn't opt for PVP, though you might get increased rewards if you opted to play competitively, regardless of whether you win or lose.)

Nofence to anyone who posted about having sports or mini games etc. but i dont think that mini games, sports etc. would be best for PvP for THIS game. Maybe some other game but i myself think that OOO should stick with having weapons and fighting than that stuff. Maybe a good twist on lockdown or something like that.

And I would actually be all for that. I prefer Blast Network as a different way to interact in a PvP style, and anyone can play it without having much of an advantage. We already have a "minigame" for bombers, so it would make sense to have another one with guns and other with melee weapons. Or even a "maze (w/o traps) race" minigame.

Though I would be against something that would use our Knights actively, for the most part.

I left the "fav competitive question": Without a doubt, Ragnarok Online. Those War of Emperium were really, really nice when they were a massive three digit people per guild war. It is unlikely this game could do such a thing, though ^~^
