Prologue
Andrew ran as fast as he could. The gremlins were coming. To get him. He passed the dead bodies of many of his men and started to weep. Tears fell down his face. He couldn't believe such a great plan could've gone so wrong.
Andrew looked over his shoulder. The gremlins had called upon their scuttlebot creations to aid them in battle. For this reason, he ran faster. A town came into view. Haven. Several knights stood outside it, guarding the doors. Once they saw Andrew coming, they hurriedly opened the gates. He ran through the arch way. The knights followed him and pulled the gates shut. There was a long chorus of clanking metal and screeches as the battalion outside stood still.
The gremlins were not happy.
All of the knights who had been guarding the doors threw themselves up against them to keep them shut. Andrew did the same. Finally, the gremlins left. Or so they thought. Once the area was clear, the knights went outside again to guard the gates.
Andrew left them to walk through the town. Haven seemed...different. The town had been hit hard by the war. As he walked through, Andrew got many jealous and annoyed glances from those who looked at his brightly colored Azure Guardian Armor. He felt bad. All these spirilians from towns everywhere had taken refuge from the gremlins.
Andrew had to ignore their pleas for food for the time being. He had to tell Feron about the Spiral Army's status in the war. He jogged into the arcade where Feron stood, waiting. The arcade didn't even look like the arcade anymore. The elevators had all fallen into a deep chasm that had opened with an earthquake (caused by the gremlins, more or less). Only one remained. Sullivan had betrayed the knights and gone to live with his devilite brothers to hide from the gremlins.
Everything felt strange to Andrew.
"Guardian Lern, what happened out there?" Feron asked Andrew.
Feron could tell Andrew had been through a lot by looking at the condition of his armor. It had been shredded, burnt, broken, ripped, and destroyed.
Andrew responded, "We...they...they overwhelmed us. We fought and fought. But we couldn't beat them. Seerus...Seerus was with them."
Feron was surprised. "Seerus? What the hell was Seerus doing there? I thought we had gotten rid of him in that last expedition."
"It seems the gremlins deceived us," Andrew stated.
Feron waved his hand to Andrew, motioning for him to follow. They walked over to a table standing where Sullivan had once worked. A map was spread across it. It had all the areas surrounding Haven written onto it.
"We are here," Feron pointed to a drawing of a small building. "The gremlins are coming from here and here. At least, these are the areas we know them to come from." He pointed to two drawings of gears in the corners of the map.
Feron continued, "We need to enter one of these two gremlin outposts to dispatch of the threat from the inside. We can't get into a situation where we are locked in. We need to make a move. Now."
Andrew nodded. "And I expect you want me to go?"
"Yes, actually. Along with a few other knights. You all will enter the gremlin outpost and get rid of any power sources. Then, I want you to destroy Seerus, once and for all," Feron explained.
"This war keeps getting harder and harder to win," Andrew said.
Feron agreed, "Yes. Because this is the Gremlin War."

NOTES:
*In this story, you could consider a Guardian a Vanguard. "Guardians have power in our Army" -Feron
*No revives or health pills. "A creature that is dead stays dead." -Feron
*In this story, the clockworks are merely an underground home for many creatures. I expect most come up to hunt, or for similar reasons. "Many animals come on the surface to hunt for food." -Andrew

ART:
The Beginning of a Squad
Feron sat in a chair in front of the Auction House. Or what was left of it. He was waiting for his newly made squad to arrive. He grinned as he saw Andrew, Damien, Jane, Fred, Mary, Greg, and Noah walking towards him. He remembered how they had all come to join the fight for liberation over Cradle.
Andrew had been a knight in the Spiral Army for as long as anyone could remember. When the gremlins first attacked, many of both sides were killed. Several Guardian Knights were killed. Andrew took the spot of Guardian after his father, Jeffrey, had died. He had developed leadership skills quickly. This is why Feron chose him to be the Squad Leader.
Damien was a recon knight. He would play a sport in the Stadium called Lockdown often. He rose through the ranks of Players and came out on top. He injured many knights. All feared meeting him in a fight. When the Stadium was destroyed, Damien was heartbroken. He left Haven for a few days to see how he would fare in the wild. One week later, Damien was seen hobbling into Haven, leaning his weight on his Gran Faust. The medics took him in and patched him up. Damien told the rest he had been attacked by gremlins and had come back to join the war. Feron thought it only right enough to grant Damien the position of Recon.
Jane was a normal civilian before the war. When her husband was killed fighting the gremlins, she got angry at the world. She would throw tantrums at any who annoyed her the slightest bit. Captain Ozlo himself convinced her to not dawn on the past, but change the future. She finally calmed down and agreed with him. Jane decided then to help knights on and off the battlefield. She became a Medic. She felt happy helping knights not share the same fate as her husband. She saved many lives. That is why Feron deemed her worthy of being the squad Medic.
Fred was your lonely hermit. He lived secluded from the rest of the spirilian population. Down in the depths of the clockworks he had found scattered weapons left by knights who were long gone. Fred enjoyed the "boom boxes" the most. He would place them on the ground, then run away as fast as he could and see how far he could get before they blew up. Fred took four of these boom boxes up with him when he, for the first time, went up to Haven instead of descending. He was greeted by screams of many dying. Fred ran right into Feron while he was panicking. Feron looked at him and told him to follow. They arrived in a training hall. Feron told Fred to show him what he could do with the weapons. He proved to be a great bomber. And because of this, Feron made Fred the Squad Bomber.
Mary grew up with guns. Her parents had left her in a dark alley in Haven to fend for herself when she was young. Mary had only been 6 years old. She didn't understand why her parents had left. She wandered out of the alley and saw no one. She ended up crawling into a master gunner's workshop. He raised her as his own and treated her much better than her old parents. When she was 8, he taught her how to use guns. Mary was a natural. When she was a young adult, she got a blitz needle. And that was just the beginning. She collected many other guns after that, including Valiance and the Sentenza. The Polaris and the Argent Peacemaker. The Umbra Driver and the Biohazard. She used them all professionally too. So, Feron granted her the position of Squad Gunner.
Greg was a nobody in the Spiral Army. He had no relations to any high-ranking members. Ozlo and Feron didn't even know his name. When a Lichen Colony had managed to find its way into Haven, Feron asked if anyone would like to go get rid of it. Everyone stepped aside except for Greg, who couldn't hear what Feron had said. So, naturally, Greg was sent to go kill it. And to many's surprise, he came back alive! They all asked how he had done it, and Greg told them he had used an Umbra Driver for the most part, a Faust when it got close to him, and a Dark Reprisal to hurt it while he was attacking with the gun or the sword. Feron was proud of Greg. He had used all the weapon types together for maximum effect. Ferom decided Greg should be the All-Around for the Squad.
Noah was a mysterious one. No one knows where he came from, nor if he even is a spirilian. He always keeps a Chaos Set wrapped around him as to crush all possiblities of his face being shown. Even though Noah seemed to pop out of nowhere, everyone knows how good he is with a sword. He has a large array of them. Rigadoon, Flourish, Snarble Barb. Every lightweight sword he finds is his new best friend. He can use them very fluently. Some say he used to be an assassin in his past. Others say he is a construct spy made by the gremlins to destroy the knights. But all say he isn't going to be killed by any normal monster, or knight for that matter. Despite his gear, Noah was made Squad Striker by Feron.
Feron was happy with this band of knights with many different personalities he had brought together. He knew they were the right choice for this mission. They all sat in chairs facing Feron. Feron told each of them who everyone was and what part they would play in the Squad. They all seemed happy with what they were except for Noah.
"I am not the leader..." Noah sighed.
Feron agreed, "Indeed. Andrew is a Guardian. Guardians have power in our Army. Andrew has been a leader before, he shall be one again."
"So be it," Noah decided after a few seconds of thinking.
