War

--------------------
Prologue

“Help… help… agh…” an injured soldier cried. He had been lying down on the cold, hard floor of the arcade. A medic ran over to help him, and seconds after he had arrived, the soldier was pronounced dead. This process was being repeated all over the arcade as warriors lay down on the ground and slowly bled to death.

Feron, a lieutenant in the Spiral Army, strode across the floor. He saw knights carry the dead over to the edge of the elevators and drop them. There was nothing else they could do. There was no place they could bury the bodies, so they threw them into the pit where an earthquake had struck weeks before. Feron felt a tear slide down his face. It was a horrible sight.

He forced himself to ignore the knights carrying the dead and hurry to the meeting that had been arranged. Ozlo, Vaelyn, Kora, Feron, and the remaining members of the Squad were going to be there to discuss their next move.

Feron walked into the makeshift room that had tables acting as walls. An opening in the tables served as an entrance. Vaelyn greeted Feron as he slipped in through the opening. Kora smiled at him. Mary stood in a corner, spinning an Argent Peacemaker on her finger. Greg sat on the floor, poking at the indentions in the tile. Andrew was writing something on a slip of paper. Damien was nowhere to be found. And Ozlo, the great leader himself, was leaning on the back wall, and let out a toothy grin when he saw Feron walk in.

“Feron!” he shouted. “It’s been awhile.”

“Indeed it has,” Feron agreed.

“And quite a rut we have run into,” Ozlo said upsettingly. “Even Andrew here is stumped.”

Andrew piped up, “Yeah, being locked up in the arcade with barriers being the only thing keeping the gremlins outside from coming in here isn’t the best spot to be in.”

“We could retreat to the Clockworks,” Vaelyn commented.

“And be cowards?” Feron argued. “No thank you.”

“She’s right, ya know,” Andrew agreed with Vaelyn.

“She’s right in saying we should be cowards?” Feron was taken aback.

Andrew gave Feron a stern look. “Feron, we have a few hundred men and even more citizens held up in the arcade. If not for that TNT one of the miners had to blow up more space, we’d all be crammed together. We have about a thousand spirilians in Haven at this time. There are more than three times that many gremlins outside. If we launch an attack to take back Haven, we would fall into an even bigger rut than the one we’re in now. Our only hope is to retreat to the Clockworks, recover from all the deaths that have been happening lately, and prepare for what is yet to come.”

Feron relented, “I suppose that is the best plan… But we must first figure out how we are going to get all of these citizens to heed our command. I was skeptical, and still am, so imagine how some of them might react.”

“Not well,” Kora joined in.

“There’s not much we can do. We’ll just have to hope they obey. Kora, do you still have that radio transmitter?” Ozlo asked.

“Yes,” Kora answered.

“Send a broadcast to all knights within ten miles then, saying: ‘All citizens are to report to the elevators immediately.’”

Greg was confused, “Ten miles?

Ozlo laughed, “Haven is pretty big.”

Kora smiled and sent out the broadcast. Andrew heard her voice echoing in his ear as he listened to her in the meeting room and in his earpiece as well.

Greg looked out the entrance of the room into the arcade. Most citizens were shuffling slowly to the elevators as they had been told. Some were arguing with each other and some were trying to figure out why they were needed at the elevators.

“We better get over there,” Ozlo commented.

They all agreed and headed over to where the crowd was gathering. Once they arrived, Ozlo held up a hand and shouted, “Silence.”

“As many of you know, hopefully all of you, we are currently boxed in the arcade by the gremlins,” he said gravely. “Well we have discovered a way out of this problem. We will retreat to the Clockworks.”

“Retreat to the Clockworks?” a man from the crowd yelled. “That’s just postponing the problem! Not getting out of it!”

“Yeah!” several others agreed.

“Would you rather we stay here and either starve to death or get killed by gremlins?” Andrew, annoyed, counterattacked.

Those who had called out mumbled and moaned.

“Then let’s start,” Ozlo said. “We’ll send you down in groups of nine until everyone is down in the Clockworks.”

The citizens began to file onto the elevators. After they had all gone down, which took a few hours, Ozlo, Feron, Vaelyn, Kora, Andrew, Mary, and Greg went down in a group of seven. As they descended, Andrew thought about what may lurk down in the depths of the Clockworks. He also thought about how he and the rest of the Squad had gotten back to Haven. And this is what had happened…

NOTES:

*In this story, you could consider a Guardian a Vanguard. "Guardians have power in our Army" -Feron

*No revives or health pills. "A creature that is dead stays dead." -Feron

*In this story, the clockworks are merely an underground home for many creatures. I expect most come up to hunt, or for similar reasons. "Many animals come on the surface to hunt for food." -Andrew

*Haven is a huge town, rather than what we know it to be like. "Haven is pretty big." -Ozlo

*In this story, the gremlins have designed a way for a living being to psychically create lightning out of thin air. "No, not magic. PAD. Psychic Air Distortion." -Zoro

Chapter One

The Journey Home

The Squad ran as fast as their legs could carry them. They had to hurry back to Haven. They sped through the forest and hurried up the hills. The smoke that had been rising into the sky had indeed been coming from Haven. Gremlins surrounded the small town. Andrew zoomed down the hill they were standing on. The rest followed him. Once they had gotten to the gates, they started to fight their way in. Andrew heard someone yell, "For Haven!"

A chorus of clashing metal followed the command. Curses were being thrown this way and that. Damien, Greg, Andrew, and Mary all swung their swords back and forth, killing gremlins. Andrew had a feeling of deja vu when he saw Feron fall to his knees as gremlins jumped on his back. Feron was lying on the ground as gremlins ripped his armor apart. Andrew, ignoring everything around him, ran over to Feron and slammed his Leviathan into the head of one of the assaulting gremlins. He repeated this action to the other gremlins mauling Feron, then helped the lieutenant up.

"Ah-Andrew... y- you just saved m- my life," Feron stuttered.

"All in a day's work," Andrew said. He examined Feron's back and saw that it was bleeding heavily. "Where can I find a medic?"

"In the Arcade..." Feron started to drift off.

Andrew knocked an approaching gremlin to the side, picked up Feron, and hurried to the Arcade. When he got in the spacious hangar, he saw very few gremlins that had made it past the Arcade's defensive line, and the knights in there easily dispatched of them.

"Medic! Medic!" Andrew shouted.

A knight came to them and asked if Andrew would set Feron down on the ground nearby. The knight asked Andrew if he would leave him alone. Andrew gave him an "ok" and went out to fight. As he left the Arcade, he passed someone holding a knight in their arms. The injured knight's stomach had been literally cut open. And their arm was nearly severed. Now looking more closely, Andrew saw that the knight was Damien.

Andrew suddenly felt a great feeling of guilt. If he hadn't saved Feron, he might've been able to save Damien's life. Too many choices for one brain to handle.

He ran out into the battlefield and started killing gremlins. After hours of fighting, the knights were pushed back into the arcade. They barricaded the entrances. Andrew went to check how Feron was doing and had great pleasure when he found out he was going to be okay.

He got a transmission from Kora saying that he was to report to a makeshift meeting room in the left side of the Arcade. He hurried over to where he needed to be and told Feron he had to be there as soon as possible. He went into the room, and sat down on the floor. And waited. He waited for Feron to come.

Chapter Two

Division

When the lift stopped, Andrew checked what depth they were at. The elevators had brought the spirilians all the way down to Depth 6. Ozlo hopped on a large rock and started to talk to the citizens.

"We, the Spiral Order officials, have decided to evacuate you all to the Clockworks because we do not stand a chance against the gremlins as is," he sighed. "And we intend to stay here until everyone gets proper medical treatment and we are ready to launch an attack to take back Haven."

Many voices started being thrown back and forth after that, with quite a number of people opposing the idea of being cowardly.

"YOU can stay down here! But I won't!" a particularly annoyed knight shouted.

"No! You will stay here! It's in your best interest!" Feron yelled back.

"Incorrect! I'm leaving, and anyone who agrees with me might as well come too." the knight growled.

He marched off in the direction of the elevators, followed by almost four hundred spirilians. Ozlo and Feron ran after them. They told them to come back or they would be annihilated by the gremlins. The massive group of rebels ignored them and picked up their pace. Ozlo held his face in his hands. "If they all die up there... All hope is gone."

*^*^*

Jason paced back and forth. He looked at his Depth Detector yet again and saw they were on Depth 2. He kept checking it every few minutes, out of boredom. A knight came up to Jason and told him what was happening with their new Spiral Army.

"They are ready to go up, sir," Peter explained. "They have all been equipped with armour and weapons. Our soldiers will succeed. It is impossible that gremlins will be able to defeat us in our current state. I suggest going now, before they get tired."

Jason disagreed. "Let them sleep tonight. We need all the power we can have. We shall wake the warriors up and attack at the crack of dawn."

"But sir-"

"Who's in charge?" Jason asked. "Yeah, that's right."

"And after all this is over, I will be the new leader of the whole Spiral Order!" he continued. "And you will be my Lieutenant!"

"You plan to challenge Ozlo for leadership of the Order?" Peter asked.

"Er... something like that." Jason's mouth curved into a devilish grin.

*^*^*

"Wake up!" Jason's voice echoed throughout the large environment.

Knights woke up and hurried to where Jason stood. Once Jason saw a few hundred soldiers in front of him, he began to speak.

"Gremlins have taken our home. The blithering idiots we call leaders of the Spiral Order have let them. Now we must clean up their mess. We must go to the surface, and banish the gremlins from our homeland. For we are not cowards, we are not scared. We are Spiral Knights! Now we aren't going to let the dumb gremlins beat us! We will march straight up to them and drive our swords through their faces. We will gun down their warriors! We will blow up their factories! Because we are knights, and knights don't just let enemies defeat them. They fight! Now let's go up there now and teach those creatures a lesson!"

The Rebel Army raced to the elevators and after a couple of minutes, they had all reached the surface. But they were not greeted by a nice welcoming committee. Nearly a thousand gremlins stood staring at them from no more than a hundred yards away.

Jason stared into the eyes of a determined, brave gremlin at the front line.

"Go!" he yelled.

Jason dashed towards that first gremlin and sliced its stomach open. "One down, nine hundred ninety nine to go," he thought.

Chapter Three

I Dream a Dream

"Ah damn," Jason cursed as a knight next to him got gutted by a gremlin thwacker. He spun around, smashing his Sudaruska into the creature. He wiped sweat from his forehead and got back to fighting. Hours passed, and eventually all the gremlins in the Arcade were dead. However, only three hundred soldiers remained of the original four hundred.

Jason proudly rushed to the entrance of the huge elevator dock. He felt like the king of Cradle after beating all those gremlins. "Psh..." he thought. "Ozlo and Feron didn't know what they were talking about..."

Just as the leader of the rebels passed through the wide opening in the long dark wall, gremlins jumped out of their hiding places. Jason screamed "Retreat!" and darted back into the Arcade. Hundreds of gremlin thwackers sped into the huge hall. Scorchers followed them. And in the middle, a large Scorcher towered above the rest. He wore a light green jumpsuit, with a name tag that read:

HEREX

This behemoth sported red goggles with blue-tinted glass. He wore a dark red scarf around his neck. Small whiskers grew around his mouth. 'Herex' walked closer to Jason, his big black boots clicking with every step. Never before had Jason felt such fear.

He backed away from the tall gremlin, but tripped over a loose rock. Jason fell backward, and gazed into the eyes of Herex, who had now pulled his goggles away from his face.

Herex looked at Jason with light blue eyes. Then he lifted his boot over Jason's face.

"Goodbye," the monster said firmly.

Jason saw Herex's boot fall down on his face...

He bolted awake, his eyes wet with tears. Peter stood over him. "Jason, you alright?"

"Huh? Oh um... yeah..." Jason exasperated. "My face feels like hell. Did you guys beat that Herex dude?"

"Herex dude?" Peter was confused. "What are you talking about?"

"We went up to the surface... We beat all the gremlins in the Arcade. But more came out of nowhere and their leader was named Herex." Jason explained.

"We haven't gone up yet... You ordered for all the soldiers to get sleep. We're waiting till dawn," Peter told.

"Then it was all a dream," Jason realized.

"A nightmare," Peter corrected.

"It seemed so real. So vivid."

"Well it was just a nightmare. You should get back to sleep. There's only an hour or two left, if my watch is correct," Peter said.

"No," Jason contradicted. "We can't go up there. We have to find another exit to the surface, we have to attack Haven from the outside."

"Attack from the outside?" Peter asked. "That's suicide! We gotta fight our way out."

"No. We're not going up through this exit if my life depends on it." Jason demanded. "We're going to find another exit, and that's final."

"But-"

"Final. Go tell the soldiers to spread the word, we're going now," Jason ordered.

"Yes... sir," Peter defeatedly relented.

Chapter Four

The Broken, the New, and the Furious

Andrew threw his Leviathan at a wall in frustration and it broke in half. He scowled and picked it up. Andrew was annoyed all those knights had left them. He went over to Vise. Vise was the only gremlin that had stayed with the knights; Punch had betrayed them.

"Vise, think you can fix this?" Andrew asked.

Vise inspected the broken blade and finally told Andrew, "I'm sorry, there's no way. This crack here... I've tried to fix ruined swords like this before... It's impossible."

Andrew grabbed the cracked Leviathan and tossed it over the edge of the depth. He had to get a new sword, but first he had to meet with Feron to talk about their plans.

*^*^*

Andrew, Vaelyn, and Feron sat on big grey rocks, talking with each other about their next move. Vaelyn and Andrew were in a heated discussion about where they should go next.

"Well then, let's search for supplies," Andrew argued with Vaelyn.

"See this depth?" she retorted. "It's void of any life other than us spirilians. What's to say the other depths aren't like this one?"

"Nothing..." Feron butted in.

"Then how about we look for the ones that made it that way?" Andrew grinned. "Let's go kill ourselves a few gremlins."

*^*^*

"What was that?" Ozlo pulled his Triglav out of its sheathe.

"Gremlins," Mary growled. She ripped her Umbra Driver from her belt.

They hurried behind a wall and watched as a gremlin carried a cart full of weapons by. It looked to be having a tough time, but worked on. Mary aimed the Umbra Driver at its head, and in a matter of seconds she and Ozlo stood before the metal cart, a dead gremlin at their feet.

Ozlo was dumbfounded when he looked inside the cart. Tons upon tons of Rocket Hammers were piled upon each other. And there were a few weapons Ozlo had never seen before. A blade that looked like a Leviathan was burning with a light green flame. The flames licked at the hilt and when Ozlo went to pick up the sword, the fire went out. He backed away from it, and it turned back on. He wrapped a cloth around the weapon and put it in his pack.

There was another weapon that looked somewhat like a gun. It had shadows spinning around it like a tornado and a bloody scarlet eye was lodged in the side of it. Mary picked it up and smiled. This was her kind of gun.

Finally, there was a long yellow stick with orange spikes protruding from its sides. Ozlo grabbed the mace-like weapon and tossed it in his pack with the sword.

After admiring the gremlin creations a bit longer, Mary and Ozlo began to haul the cart back to the elevator, where they would take it back to the temporary Spiral Order Camp.

*^*^*

Andrew and Vaelyn ran away from the twenty or so gremlins chasing them.

"Come on! We have to stand and fight!" Vaelyn yelled to Andrew. "Where's your sword?!"

Andrew frowned and shouted, "I sorta... Broke it."

"You idiot!" Vaelyn said, annoyed. "Take this!"

She tossed Andrew her second flourish and on the count of three, both turned around to face the gremlins. They fought well for the first few minutes, stabbing and slicing gremlins to and fro. After at least five had been killed, a gremlin mauled Vaelyn. She fell to the ground, trying in vain to knock the gremlin off of her, to no avail. Andrew saw her plight and rushed to save her. He kicked the attacking gremlin in the gut and lifted Vaelyn up. She had a nasty cut on her arm. Andrew told her to stay there while he went to fight.

He dashed around, swiping his sword back and forth. At least ten gremlins died at his hand. As Andrew was finishing off the last gremlins alive, Vaelyn picked herself up.

"Nice... Work..." she stuttered.

"You don't sound too well," Andrew said unhappily.

"I'll be fine, it's just a cut."

"Just in case?" Andrew asked as he pulled a roll of bandages from his pack. He wrapped it around Vaelyn's arm and once he was satisfied, he put it back in his pack.

"Let's get back to the camp," he continued.

They both took what they thought they would need from the gremlins' carcasses and headed back to the spirilian camp.

Chapter Five

Two Plans and Two Swords

Vaelyn moved the com unit closer to her mouth.

"The plan is in motion. I can soon get the blade," she spoke into it.

"Perfect," a voice responded. "How long until you... do it?"

"I have to find a way to get close to him," Vaelyn explained. "Two days, maybe three."

"Excellent. I want you to send me a message via com unit once you do it," the unknown voice told.

"Yes, anything for you," Vaelyn said.

Vaelyn heard footsteps. Someone was coming. She pressed the off button on the com unit and slipped it back onto her head. Feron saw Vaelyn and started coming towards her.

"Vaelyn, what are you doing up so late?" he asked.

"You know... Just thinking," she lied.

"About what?" Feron wondered. "Our plan to beat the gremlins?"

Vaelyn smiled, "Not really."

She strolled closer to Feron and danced her fingers across his chest. "I was thinking something else."

Feron stepped back. "Vaelyn, that was... uncalled for."

"What? You don't like me?" Vaelyn cried.

"No! That's not it. I just..."

"I get the message. Leave me alone," Vaelyn let a false tear slip from her eye.

Feron slowly backed away. Vaelyn stood up as soon as he was gone and pulled a recon cloak out from a bag nearby. She covered herself with it and sneaked past Feron to where Ozlo slept. She quickly but quietly unzipped a bag next to the sleeping captain of the Spiral Order and pulled a long yellow stick out from it.

"Ah... the sword," she thought. Vaelyn slipped the thin sword into her backpack and sneaked back to where she was supposedly sleeping. She put the recon cloak and the blade into the bag and laid her head down on the soft dirt of the Aurora Isles depth. After a few minutes she was sound asleep, dreaming of dark, twisted things and happy, beautiful things at once.

In her dream, Vaelyn was staring at the disfigured corpse of a knight. She turned towards another knight standing next to her and stated, "Peter, it is done."

Peter turned to her and chuckled, "Indeed it is." Peter then threw a torch at the dead knight and lit it on fire.

Then Vaelyn was somewhere else. This time she was looking at a different knight that had been murdered. It lay with its arms and legs sprawled out, as if it had been struck hard with the blow of a heavy sword. Peter stood next to her, just like last time.

"Ha! We're almost ready, Vaelyn," he laughed.

"Soon..." Vaelyn agreed.

Suddenly the area around her melted into darkness and a different background took its place. Peter put a crown on his head and glared at Vaelyn.

"Seize her!" he shouted.

Two knights came from both sides and grabbed Vaelyn. She resisted. Peter pulled a Voltech Alchemer from his belt and shot her. Vaelyn fell to the ground, dead. But then she jumped back up and ran around, slicing knights and monsters alike with her flourishes.

Once all the opposition was dead, Ozlo appeared before her, shaking his head.

"You have been naughty. Naughty people get punished," he frowned.

Then Ozlo shot Vaelyn with a Voltech Alchemer just like Peter had done. She fell to the ground, also like the last time. And again, she jumped back up, this time feeling spasms every few seconds. Vaelyn ran up to Ozlo and gutted him with her flourish. Then she tripped over his corpse and died.

Red and purple lights flashed all around her body and she heard a loud booming voice shouting at her.

"Die, you scum!" it screamed. "You are nothing but a dirty piece of trash and you will never win."

Vaelyn wiped a real tear from her eye, "Please, don't hurt me!" she called out to the mysterious voice.

"I won't do a thing. You will be your own downfall," it responded.

Then Vaelyn bolted awake. She was sweating from head to toe. She took a rag and cleaned her face. She realized she had been crying in her sleep. It was true. She was most likely going to be her own downfall. Every night when she slept, she had nightmares like the one she had had this night.

But there was no turning back. Not now, not ever. She had to go through with the plan.

*^*^*

Andrew smiled after a good night's sleep. He passed by Vaelyn as he was going to get more supplies for the knights, and she looked suicidal. He asked her what was wrong and she said she didn't want to talk about it. Andrew shrugged her bad mood off and ran into Ozlo because he wasn't paying attention.

"Sorry, sir," Andrew apologized. "I wasn't looking where I was going."

"It's alright," Ozlo said. "By the way, Andrew, did you get a new sword? I heard you broke your old one."

"Oh, I borrowed a Calibur from the weapon cart. But it's still not the same," Andrew explained.

"I can get you a better one. Let's see here," Ozlo looked into his pack. "That's strange... I thought I had another sword. No matter."

He pulled a shiny gray Leviathan from the pack. "Andrew, this is no normal Leviathan, it lights up green when no one touches it."

Ozlo handed the sword to Andrew and it blazed with a bright green fire.

"Whoa!" Ozlo exclaimed. "It was like that when I found it, but when I held it, the blade turned dormant, like it was before I gave it to you."

"Well, it seems I'm the chosen one," Andrew laughed.

"No kidding..." Ozlo watched in awe as Andrew swung the sword around a bit.

"Thank you, Ozlo," Andrew grinned.

"Your welcome," Ozlo replied.

Then Andrew eagerly ran to the elevator to test his new weapon. He felt like he was invincible now; this new sword was one of a kind. He happily pressed the down button and went down to Depth 7.

He saw a group of wolvers and rushed towards them. He swung his sword at the closest one to him, and it lit up bright green, then burned to death. Andrew's smile stretched from ear to ear. The sword did make him invincible. He made short work of the other wolvers and dashed through the rest of the depth, slicing up everything in his way. When he got on the elevator and pressed up one depth, he was extremely happy.

Nothing could stand in his way, and the Spiral Order's way, from winning the Gremlin War.

Ghostmane Style

"Hello my... king," the ghostmane stalker said. "Have you lost weight? I think you've lost weight. Yes, I can see, you have lost weight."

Tinkinzar sighed, "Please, Zoro, not now. I need to think about who will become the new Warmaster... I still don't know how the knights got out of their cages. They were under max security."

"My lord, if I may, I believe it was Herex who let them loose," Zoro lied. "I suggest we execute him."

"Even if it was Herex who unlocked the cages, he is in Haven at the moment, leading the gremlin forces," Tinkinzar explained. "I suppose you could say he's the temporary Warmaster."

"But my lord, he hasn't even earned that title," Zoro argued. "Trust me, make me the new Warmaster and you won't regret it."

"I suppose... Fine. Zoro, from now on you are both the Shadowmaster and the Warmaster," the king relented.

"Excellent," Zoro smiled, thoroughly pleased.

Zoro walked out of the room. He touched the katanas on his back, the grenades hidden under his shirt, his knives and all of his hidden weapons on his body. He grinned. Zoro strolled down the hall until he slipped into the ghostmane headquarters. Grimace looked up when he heard Zoro coming and went over to greet him.

"Warmaster?" Grimace asked.

"Warmaster," Zoro snickered.

They both laughed maliciously.

"So, when do you plan to assassinate that idiot on the throne?" Grimace whispered.

"As soon as Herex dies," Zoro replied, also in a whisper. "I have ghostmanes stationed in Haven, they'll know if knights kill him. And if the knights don't kill him, I'll order Phoryn to."

"Phoryn is a bit incapable, wouldn't you agree?" Grimace commented.

"He's not the best for the job, but he's the best we have in Haven at the moment," Zoro explained.

"I see," Grimace sighed.

A com unit on a table near Zoro started crackling.

"Zoro, Zoro, come in Zoro," a voice spoke.

"Yes?" Zoro said into the small machine. "I'm here."

"I would've gotten this message to you sooner, but I just didn't have the time," the voice responded. "The knights have retreated into the Clockworks, repeat, they've retreated into the Clockworks."

"What?" Zoro growled. "Get Phoryn on the line."

There was a bit of banging from the other end, and when Phoryn finally had the com unit in his hand, Zoro's patience had all left the building.

"Yes sir, Phoryn here," Phoryn stated.

Zoro held his head in his hands. "I want you to assassinate Herex. Fail to do this, and I will murder you."

"Seems like a good trade," Phoryn agreed. "I'll kill him as soon as possible."

"Good," Zoro turned the com unit off.

He told Grimace to go back to what he was doing and left the room. Zoro cloaked himself and sneaked into Tinkinzar's throne room. He watched as a tall, thin gremlin walked in. It had a large purple Wrench Wand slung across its back and its face was hidden under a light grey hood. It had a pouch full of vials hanging over its shoulder.

"King Tinkinzar, I've come as you requested," it called.

"Ah, Mender Melicules. I must talk to you," Tinkinzar smiled.

"Of course," Melicules smiled back.

"I need you to go to Haven," Tinkinzar said. "To help with mending our fallen brethren. You're the best mender we have, you've brought gremlins back from the dead before. Think you can do this?"

"Absolutely," Melicules grinned.

Zoro frowned under the cloak. If Phoryn was to kill Herex, this mistake of a gremlin would revive him. Zoro had to kill him. The Shadowmaster tiptoed out of the throne room and followed Melicules. The mender didn't ever go into a room where he was alone. Zoro swore under his breath. He'd have to come back later.

He returned to the ghostmane headquarters and told Grimace what had happened.

Grimace looked Zoro straight in the eyes and said, "I know what we have to do. Phoryn's an idiot, he won't kill the mender properly and it'll just revive itself. I have to go."

"Grimace, you're my best ghostmane," Zoro said.

"It must be done."

With that, Grimace left the room.

Chapter Seven

Death and Blackmail

Vaelyn crept up to Feron's sleeping body. She pulled the yellow stick, which she had now named Slicer, out of her bag. She pressed it against his neck, and got ready to kill him.

"Now, you wouldn't do that," a knight laughingly smiled from behind her.

Vaelyn hurriedly stuffed Slicer into her bag and turned around. Hahn stood behind her.

"Do what?" she asked.

"Don't play dumb with me," Hahn grinned. "You just tried to murder Feron. I'll bet if I told Ozlo this, he'd kill you."

"You wouldn't," Vaelyn growled.

"I would," Hahn retorted. "Well, I wouldn't if you did something for me..."

"Fine. What do you want me to do?" Vaelyn sighed.

"I want you to first: Give up your Lieutenant title and tell Ozlo to promote me instead."

Vaelyn glared, "You have my word."

"Two: I want you to give me that delightful weapon you have there."

"But I can't!" Vaelyn disagreed. "I just can't..."

"Then I guess we're done here..."

"No! No... Fine," Vaelyn said.

A devilish smile appeared on Hahn's face. "Lastly: I want you to kill Ozlo too."

"But that makes no sense! If I kill Ozlo and Feron, what's the point in you becoming Lieutenant?"

"Don't question my ways," Hahn gave Vaelyn an evil eye.

Vaelyn turned around. "As you wish."

She left Feron, but as soon as Hahn was out of sight, she returned to her job. Vaelyn grabbed Slicer and cut a small indention into Feron's throat. She slipped it back into her bag and left the scene.

*^*^*

"Feron!" Andrew shouted. "Someone help! Medic!"

A medic dashed over to where Andrew, along with Kora and Hahn, stood staring at a puncture wound in Feron's neck. The medic emptied bottles of medicines into Ferons mouth and wound. He wrapped Feron's neck up with gauze, then continued to dump medicines into Feron's mouth.

After a few minutes, the medic said that Feron would need special care, and that they'd need to go away. Andrew left and sighed. He felt the long scar going down his bad eye. A piece of cloth covered the gruesome memorandum. He could only imagine a cut like that across his throat. Thinking of it sent shivers down his spine.

He could only hope the medic knew what he was doing. Then another thought appeared in Andrew's mind.

Who did that to Feron?

Okay, here's the best I could do with a Phantom model. The head, if nothing else, is accurate, although I'm not 100% certain what level of Cobalt the Phantom armor actually is. Artist's interpretation and all that.

Chapter Eight

Power Hungry

Peter cracked his knuckles and began to wake up the soldiers.

"Captain Jason wants you all up! We're not going for the Arcade today, however. Apparently, Jason thinks the gremlins have gotten in without even going up there!" Peter growled.

After a few hours, the soldiers were all equipped and ready to go.

Jason hopped upon a rock.

"Listen up!" he shouted. "We're going on a different path. Up there is a suicide mission. There is a Wolver Den a few depths down. There is a separate exit at the end of the depth that comes out a few miles away from Haven. We're going to use this exit and attack the gremlins from the outside. They won't see it coming and we'll be able to storm the town. And... Yes, this is the Depth where the rest of the Order is."

There was a bit of agreeing and disagreeing chatter before Jason smashed his Sudaruska into the ground with a loud boom.

"Let's go," he stated.

*^*^*

In the Wolver Den, they came upon a fork in the road.

"We'll take this path," Jason nodded his head to the left. "The Order is down the other one."

The army marched down the left path. Some soldiers kicked dirt and stones that had been lying on the path around. Jason suddenly heard something. He told everyone to stay still while he went ahead.

The captain of the rebels sneaked past a bend in the road. His eyes widened when he saw a Spiral Technician staring right at him. Jason's eyes quickly glanced past the technician at a fire blazing in the distance. He had accidentally lead the army down the wrong path. His eyes turned back to the fear-filled knight in front of him.

Before Jason could make any moves, the technician began running back to the fire.

"Rebels! Someone help! They've come to attack us!" it started shouting.

Jason swore under his breath. The technician had it all wrong; but it was too late. If he let the young knight go tell Ozlo that the army was coming to attack the Order, they'd fight back. Jason could only come up with one plan.

He ran after the technician. When the poor soul tripped on a tree root, Jason took his chance and smashed down with his Sudaruska. The knight fell to the ground dead. Jason looked up and saw six knights looking at him with anger.

The technician had done it: a full on Civil War was about to start by the looks of it. The group of knights ran back to tell the rest of the Order. Jason hurried back to his troops. He came to them in a few minutes and was sweating buckets.

"Civil... War... go back... we have to go back..." he managed.

Peter turned to the troops and yelled, "You heard the man! Ozlo is declaring war on us! We must fight back!"

"No..." Jason disagreed. "We gotta... go back."

Peter scrunched his brow. "This coward looks battle in the eye and runs. We can beat the Order, am I right?!"

The army cheered a loud, "Huzzah!" and rushed past Peter to fight.

Peter looked at panting Jason. "I always knew you'd do something like this. I'm taking charge now."

He punched Jason in the gut. Jason fell down, clutching his stomach. He then proceeded to kick Jason where the sun doesn't shine. Peter stood up and walked away, but not before spitting on Jason.

The injured knight watched as Peter dashed to the new war-zone. He couldn't get up. All he could do was lie on the ground and wait.

"What have I done?" Jason asked himself.

He felt his dislodged rib. He groaned.

Peter had definitely been working out.
