Out of curiosity, what say you, players, to this question?
I'm quite aware that I'm not the only one who lurks around these forums, even after not playing the actual game itself for a long time.

What would bring you back to the game?

Personally, I'd make my reappearance if the game had more balance, or perhaps the original Radiant Sun Shards were somehow implemented again.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Based off the responses to this topic, here are the things that would "bring players back".
*last updated at post #59*

16 - New Content (Thunder-The-Bright, Aumir, Atomicblaster, Sweet-Hope, Pipipipipi, Gwenyvier, Hero-Of-Cheese, Poothis, Stormguardia, Chromeandroid, Qwao, The-Worst-Knight, Sintag, Amaki, Glittertind, Colray, Avixi)
10 - Changes to User Interface (Pichali, Paintool, Hrpb, Sweet-Hope, Ewbte, Chromeandroid, Qwao, Peter-San, Glittertind, Red-Galaxy)
8 - Balanced Content (Thunder-The-Bright, Pipipipipi, Klipik-Forum, Sir-Turtlebear, Glittertind, Bamzalot, Colray, Avixi)
7 - Changes to Heat (Me-Luv-Ulongtime, Hero-Of-Cheese, Ewbte, Qwao, Peter-San, Dibsville, Avixi)
6 - Changes to Energy (Zaffy-Laffy, Avenger-Of-Troy, Paintool, Hero-Of-Cheese, Ewbte, Peter-San)
4 - Consistent Updates/More Frequent Progress Updates (Blaze-Breaker, Klipik-Forum, Qwao, Avixi)
3 - Return of The Originial Radiant Sun Shards (Whimsicality, Skold-The-Drac, Sir-Turtlebear)
3 - Changes to Revive System (Paintool, Ewbte, Sintag)
3 - Changes to LockDown (Klipik-Forum, Sintag, Glittertind)
3 - Changes to Prize Boxes (Bitsbee, Colray, Avixi)
2 - Changes to Enemies (Chromeandroid, Mystrian)
2 - Performance Improvements/Bug Fixes (Divsville, The-Worst-Knight)
1 - Map Editor (The-Worst-Knight)
1 - Changes to Crafting (Peter-San)
1 - Changes to Aesthetics (Midnight-Dj)

3 - Bribes/Cookies (Fehzor, Pandafishie, Avixi)

5 - Unsure/Didn't Answer (Ironic-Biscuit, Pandafishie, Goldtrimmer, Bopp, Asthix)

Let me know if there's some better way I could categorize this, or if I got your response wrong.
I've also been thinking about putting together an actual survey for the community, which I've started a thread about here.

The Heating System

The heating system. The current one is stifling players from even considering new gear to get, because they don't want to deal with it at all. Which in part, impacts lockdown massively. Players get their get gear to T3 and never look back - so T1 and T2 lockdown dies :(

I'm going to say the UI. It was thrust upon us with no mention, and like any good UI it should have had an option to switch back and forth between the old UI. Features are constently in the way of the screen (shield and health bar), can't see my team mates health to the pip, can't share pick ups for teamwork (click and drop is gone!!! GONE I TELL YOU!!), and I still don't like looking at my massively expensive self portrait all the time. (Serve's WHAT FUNCTION!?)
I do miss the old item icons, however I do like looking and telling what gear I'm playing with.

MIST! Sure it stopped you from playing all the time, but it reinforced me to come back everyday. I didn't get to play all the game had to offer, but I always came back. I just felt it could have been handled differently somehow.

i mean like it used to be: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=110452779

the only thing i can think about WHY they MADE that USELESS BIG KNIGHT PORTRAIT, its to tell players "HUR DUR YOU MUST CLICK HERE TO INVITE SOMEONE" and isnt working as they intended, because most of the time that a new player need help with their mission i tell them they can invite me without send me friend request and they only say "how i do that?" when they just could simply add a small sign plus button to "Invite options". i really can tolerate and stand changes like the UI... even if they arent so useful like before the UI update... BUT BIG KNIGHT PORTRAIT ITS WHAT ANNOYS ME in the UI because it dont have purpose other than help to block your view.

I would also appreciate if we kept on topic, though cookies are certainly appreciated, Pandafishie.

@Mystrian "How do you know users are "lurking"? There is no "users browing this fo[r]um" other forum have."

My main evidence lies in the fact that I'm quite familiar with a majority of veteran players, and for the most part, these friends of mine who've put so much into the game certainly care about that same game very much. Thus, they do keep tabs on it, even when they've not played it for some time (as I have). Most people tend not to completely abandon something that they've put vast amounts of time and emotion into.

My main evidence lies in the fact that I'm quite familiar with a majority of veteran players

That's highly doubtful. You might have a big friend list, a big guild, and big former guilds. You may be familiar with everyone who plays Lockdown during your waking hours. You may be familiar with frequent forum posters. This set of acquaintances still constitutes a small minority of veteran players, probably.

It's easy to underestimate the size of the silent majority --- those people whom you don't even know you don't know. For example, I have a number of ultra-veteran friends, whose names have never come up on these forums.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you know the community and what it wants. Cheers.

Indeed.

@Bopp
Allow me to explain my previous statement, "My main evidence lies in the fact that I'm quite familiar with a majority of veteran players.", as you've correctly pointed out that I in no way know the thoughts of the entire playerbase. I completely agree that I don't know what the majority of players are thinking. I attempting to explain the grounds for calling "veteran lurkers" to state their arguments.
If we were to get into the topic of how many people I know, again, you are correct in assuming that I only know a fraction of the playerbase. I do, however, claim to know a small fraction of the "veteran lurkers", that is; the players who follow the game despite only playing it on occasion and who have dedicated large amounts of resources into the game. Again, with your point, that I do not know all of the players, and thus, why I have asked for their opinion and summoned them by posting on this forum.

Content, content that is not

Content, content that is not event based and will be gone in 1-2 weeks time. Plain and simple.

I take frequent (increasingly longer) breaks because I get bored. More bosses, floors, monsters (beasts are incredibly weak and under-developed, just as an example) would make the game interesting again. Things that are challenging would be nice also... and I do not mean challenging due to unfair level design/too many mobs at a time to possible be able to dodge them all. Elite mode was a nice addition but the mobs having more HP is a moot point, and them dealing more damage only matters if you get hit. It is not really a challenge either when you know the areas/mobs so well from doing them for 3 years that you could do it in your sleep.

Honestly when I heard about Elite mode I expected all the enemies to be reverted back to pre-nerf and very dangerous forms (which would have made the game much more interesting). That unfortunately was not the case. Alpha Wolvers still move like trains that are incredibly easy to kill once they start attacking, Zombies still don't turn, etc etc.

The last constantly accessible normal boss we got was the Twins in mid 2011, Shadow Lairs late 2011 (which are rarely ran due to cost), and the last one was Seerus in OCH (DLC) in early 2012.

While I understand new content takes time to create and code, the lack of consistently playable content is something that makes a lot of the older players get bored.

The point at which we should have a fully balanced and final game.

Honestly, coming back's pretty out of the question for me. I've beat the game.
I had the best weapon that anybody in the game could get. Radiant Sun Shards.

Only way I'd be willing to visit again'd be my shards coming back. And something worth challenging that isn't stuck behind a wall of pay/random number generation.

Both aren't happening I assure you. So yeah.

PvP is the same boring game here. And PvE isn't in a condition for old blood to play.

I have been playing this game for two years, do I count as a veteran, albeit, one year late?

Anyways, for me, it would be if they bring back the old heating systems. You know all the reasons for this. Radiants being rare, takes a lot of them to heat up a weapon, yada yada yada. And I know that for that to be possible, you would need mist to come back. And we know that's not gonna happen.

Also, new stuffs to play around with would help as well. Promos are nice, but we need something to really sink our teeth into. You can't just have icing and no cake. It's good for a bit, but then you want something else.

I'd come back for Radiant Sun Shards.

On the other hand, I get the impression that the developers don't care about the game any longer, and that's infectous; it makes me lose my interest in the game as well.

I don't know if the developers actually do care or not, but it's certainly not the impression I'm given. There are numerous bugs and balancing problems with the game that have been around for an embarrassingly long time. If the devs had still cared, I feel like, even if they wouldn't be fixed, they would at least have been addressed. That is to say, they would have at least been replaced by other, hopefully lesser, bugs and balancing issues.

What? It was in the beta before they tried it again with the UI update. It's the only thing to have been implemented and removed twice.
Also sad veteran angst is sad.

The thing that bugged me on this topic lately is the boss u fight from the book of dark ritual. It's the coolest boss in the game hands down. It is the most recent boss added to the game by a longshot. I can't for the life of me figure out why at this point (3rd kat event) they wouldn't make it any easier to play at all.

I read the whole thread as "What would you bring back" instead of "what would bring you back" and got really confused.

As for me, even though I still play fairly frequently, what would get me back in heavily would be either a fairly steady flow of content-adding updates, like once a month or something, or a major weapon rebalance and explosion of playerbase combined with a ranking system for LD and custom lobbies.

Bored.

I played a while, then got bored. I then fired it up again after quite a long break when mist was removed. I grew bored quickly though.

I believe the things that would bring me back are, in order from most to least interesting:

1. Enemies that aren't boring to fight. The current enemies are really easy. Their attack patterns are very predictable, which makes for very boring battles in general. I remember the monsters being less restricted, of course that could be nostalgia.

2. Permanent, interesting content. I am not interested in limited time offers. If I can't get to it on my own time, I won't start the game.

3. UI Changes. I agree that the large self portrait is obstructive and unnecessary. I can not think of a single reason to have it in the game.

Any of these would at least make me give the game another look.

I first started writing this and it turned into a ridiculously long rant so I'll just condense it a bit and all~

I think for me I'm past that point where I'll "be back", I sort of just hang around every now and then, sometimes just to chat with people I made friends with etc, but maybe that one "bring me back" factor would be for OOO to set themselves a certain kind of timeline and *try* to follow it. With the Gunner update being delayed so terribly long I think it's a long shot, but "consistent" updates are a good way to keep people on their toes. (More so if they would just tell us what they plan in advance more often... Surprises are good, but sometimes...)

Excerpt from what I had originally written, some points to ponder:
"After the hype Gunner update has lost its appeal (to me) and I'd say I'm done with SK gunner update or not. I still come back because of friends and some other things. I think."

SK has a really great gameplay system (I'm talking about its action-based combat. Okay, maybe not so much action, but it is still-) for a free to play game, and personally, I've had problems trying to find any other free MMORPG/game with a similar gameplay style to SK, so at least for me is the main attraction as to why I stick around even after about three years.
-Story: I still want to see more of the Crimson Order, and there's still the enormous potential with the swarm and the core and all that. So this is good.
-Items, equipment: Now I'll be honest: I do not believe balance will ever be fixed so I no longer care so much about it anymore. Just release the guns (I want my piercing antigua- that is all), and what may be over 30 useless or so armors. ????
...
I'd say as a whole I don't mind the UI changes, but while that is true I'll agree with some people that the new UI has partially made SK lose the "Tis' what makes Spiral Knights Spiral Knights" factor. However it won't be a driving factor to get me playing again, because as long as it sort of works the game is playable and I'm not going to leave because of it.
...
Heat: As we all know the demonic fires of the Forge and its servants the Fire Crystals have not been a really kind neighbour to us. But as a veteran player with 70+ 5* items, changing the heating system is going to be a boon to me rather than be a driving factor to get me playing again, but I'm all in support of tweaking it.

Good that you asked...

Well the UI at first although it won't happen. But if it would I wouldn't play any other game than SK anymore because it made the game perfect.
The old Energy , Crafting and Heat System should really return. The game just isn't good anymore when you can't get 5* gear to level 10.
I'd also like more new content. REAL content. No events, no promos. Just new missions, story and gear.
Promos are cool, but you should keep them at ~4 per year. And NO reskins. It would be really nice if the promos don't come back, so that everything would be really rare in some months. That's everything for now

Three Things

1. Revamp PvP

As it stands, PvP is like sports. The ones with steroids (Max UVs) will always win, but unlike sports, there's nothing stopping them. Maybe disallow UV's most matches, or limit them in some way, make the people who have them have to suddenly fight on us commoner's levels.

2. Revamp Revives

Revives come from a rare item. Anyone else seeing the problem with this? Moving on.

3. Release the Gunner Update already.

Do I need to specify?

May be the wrong place to put this ...

Could be its own topic, really. And I'm not sure if what I have to say would be well-liked or easy to categorize. For that matter, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to be in this discussion at all, given I still mostly happily play every day and generally have been satisfied with the current build. But since we're imagining, let's toss out what I'd personally like to see.

People have been asking for more content, and I generally agree ... but I'd like to point out that people generally haven't been particularly specific. There's one particular type of content I would like to see: additional visual interest/variety. What do I mean by that? I mean that the game, while having a pleasant art style, simply stops being interesting to look at after some time.

Two areas need to be changed to fix this, assuming it needs fixing. First off is level design. The current maps could afford to have a bit more randomization and more visual effects and props. The Scenario Rooms introduced some time ago were a great step in this direction, but ideally every room would have something to separate it from the others. It's something I learned back when designing D&D adventures: the same 30' by 30' room is going to get dull fast. We don't need new levels in the sense of, say, Candlestick Keep. What we need is for interesting shapes, breakable props, extra hazards, and interesting background events.

The second probably holds lesser priority, but it's still worth mentioning. When you think about it, how many monsters have you killed? Wouldn't it be nice to have their appearance be random too? The idea of "monster accessories" might seem a little silly, but I tend to like it. There's unfortunately an upper limit to how many different behaviors can be implemented (though we haven't reached it yet), and making Wolvers different levels of fuzziness or giving Thwackers something other than that hammer-wrench-ax thing to hit people with might be fun and interesting while giving the art team something to do.

So yeah. That's my ... what's the phrase? Two crowns?

Glittertind

Hmmm, what would keep me interested?

Well, for starters I find it very easy to point at things like the balancing of gear in this game and go "That. Do something about it." Like many others, naturally, I'd love to see something done about that, and the UI, and new content, and content for Lockdown and so on. After playing for two or three years, posting on the forum regularly, complaining with others about the things you mention in the OP...

I find myself just tired of it all, and ultimately I think that the last drop for me was the way Three Rings handled things. Not because they didn't do anything, physically, about it, but because they seem to have this freaking sacred oath to never really tell what's going on or update us on anything.

Remember the official balancing survey(s)? What ever did we get out of that?
Remember when someone from Three Rings said "I'm keeping tally" (or something of the sort) during the UI rage thread? No word after that. Not that we ever got to know how many would have been needed to begin with. (Not too annoyed by the UI anymore, seeing as we can turn off all the annoying stuff like charge meter and red screen and all that. Still a bloody ugly web 1.0 UI and an unnecessary portrait that weren't there before...)
Remember when Nick stated they would look into armours that became obsolete after the Chaos buff? No word after that either.

Not to mention how easily Three Rings could lay the AT discussion dead by saying "No, we won't be doing anything about that." Imagine. People seem so caught up in the AT discussion that they turn on each other, and Three Rings don't mind. I'm sure they still like the feedback about AT, but after such a long time they should know that some people don't like it and give a statement about it.

I'm sure they're working their buttocks off behind the curtains, and Spiral Knights isn't the only game they've got to maintain, but honestly how hard would it be to just let us know what's happening.

All of this was just tiring and finally, after all this time I'm pretty much through with this game.
I guess you can take this as a vote for "Consistent Updates/More Frequent Progress Updates." That's something that could possibly bring me back, I guess.

What would keep things more interesting for me?

Hmm... Although I clearly see multiple issues with this game, I still find enjoyment in it. I get bored of the same old stuff like everyone else, but that is unlikely to change. So instead I change myself and go fighting the same old with stuff I've never used before. This keeps things a bit more fresh for me. Though even this will some day dry up because at this rate, I'm going to have used everything against anything 100 times over.

But when that happens, here is what would keep me in Spiral knights for a very long period of time:

Add a new vender to the Bazaar and Guild Halls called the Arms Dealer who wears a snazzy Trench Coat and Hyper-Ultra-Swagmasteh-Toupee that everyone would want. Even those who usually hate toupees. He would stand in an awesome pose right next to Bosco twerking on a box whilst throwing random Iron Slugs all over the place and every time a person stepped on one, every item in their arsenal would get replaced with the Iron Slug for the rest of the day. Including Crowns and Energy. Every now and a then, the Arms Dealer would also come parachuting in on a random party exploring the Arcade along with a bunch of Recon Rangers and starting rapid fire one hit killing everything with dual M60s. Every time you see his NPC, a (most likely) illegal copy of 'This Ain't a Seen it's an Arms Race' would start playing at max volume.

For something more realistic to happen, weapon balance. The Acheron has completely driven me away from the Obsidian Edge. And that means I can't completely goal number one.

My apologies for not updating things swiftly; I'm currently rather busy with things but will keep this thread updated.

i havent done this yet!

Well, what would keep me playing...

I had a lot of fun playing this game and going through the missions. Something I would like to see implemented are more unique missions, like the cake mixer mechanic from the Anniversary.

I see they have the boxes for Apocrean back on sale for energy, that was one of the things I was going to add. I hope it isn't only on energy necause of the overlapping events.

I don't want total weapon balance, but I want to see something where someone using an Acheron/Gran Faust can be beaten by someone who is using an Iron Slug. Change the weapons so tactics a can be employed.

Even if none of this happens, I would still play this game. I'm still a new-ish player so this game still has my main interest.
