--Update Box-
Edited OP some. Things should be clearer.

--Download-
LATEST RELEASE (Might not run yet! We're using the latest version of our engine, so this means the engine could run into issues on some computers! I'll do my best to help you if it doesn't work.)

You'll need either Windows 7, Windows 8, Mac OSX 10.10 or later, OR a modern version of Linux. You also need an OpenGL compatible system. If you don't know what that means, you probably have it.

For Windows users who aren't in the know, download the Win7-8 version, and unzip it. Then run the elemedals.exe program in the folder. That should work!

Oh, and also understand that I'm only putting releases here. If you want the latest, bleeding edge version, you'll have to pull Elemedals from the git repository. For most, though, this is unnecessary. (Only if you want to help develop the game.)

--Original Post-
Greetings,

I am sending this from a location which I cannot identify. My owner,
Pivot, has just killed the squad which he led. His motives are unknown. If you
see him, exercise extreme caution. You will probably have to resort to violence.

Class: I
Type : CUSTOM
Code : 0000
Name : Joint
Date : 8/3/14
Area : undef

What is this? I thought Pivot was the good guy...

Hello hello! This is a bit of a reboot. This time, I actually have something to show to you rather than words and hot air! Take a look! The frog and tiles/background come from Frogatto, not me.

Boss lineup. (The top-right two icons are placeholders and shall be replaced.) The bosses are, in no particular order: Vanaduke, Revird, Snarbolax, Pit Brute, Royal Jelly, and One.

Playable version will come when I can get the latest version of the engine and package it up. You can access the git repo. (See links section)

By the way, in the "Who's your favorite character?" contest, Feline-Grenadier got first! (Colray's Lost Soul of Almire is my personal second favorite, while others liked Midnight-Dj's choice a lot.) Because of that, Happyapathy might get to be the first NPC! I have not recieved a reply yet, but, if he agrees, Happy can chose how this NPC acts, looks, and what he/she shall say. (Feline, I shall make sure you get something as well, but I'm not sure what, yet.)

Seriously!? 48 hours is LONG enough!

/kidding

I will be posting pictures or a video every Sunday. Once I get the player and a few monsters created, I'll create a demo.

Until and after then, anyone who comes up to me, either on Steam or in Spiral Knights, is invited to help. That being said, I won't take absolutely everyone. For example, I won't take any coders who do not use FFL (Frogatto Formula Language) at all. I myself don't know it too well and cannot teach you, and I'd prefer to work with someone who will be learning it as well.

But, seriously, I think I can handle things on my own for a little while. It's part of the design; I only want help after the first demo.

Early update! Just for you!

I'll show you how it looks in game. I still have to do the code, but that should be pretty fast. The check here on Sunday! (Night...if you live in PST. I will need to record, upload, etc.)

Keep in mind that I might not be able to make it; I'm working alone right now, so it's a bit of a crunch. But I will be back on Sunday, regardless.

Yay, a 2nd post that isn't mine!

Suggestion acknowledged. However, I will say that a turn animation is more polish than necessity. Since this is fairly bare bones right now, I would rather not have to redraw Pivot another time just for something which makes the game look nicer.

I will put it on the todo list. Thank you! Tips hat.

Well, while I do agree, it's not getting me down. Even if nobody sees this yet, it's good for historical reasons, once people start coming.

Due to the nature of the project, being a fan game and all, word of mouth is the only way to get others to know about the project. You could help that way...

Interesting idea...but translations are way over my head. C'est vrai, n'est pas?

Also, I really should get that disclaimer up before long. I intend on having a splash screen, detailing the project's bounds. I need to get it up ASAP, I guess. It's going in the next update.

Although it may be spoilers, I've made a folder for various dialogue ideas.

Unfortunately, I think I might have stumbled across a glitch in the demo version of the engine which make jumping not work the way it should. So...yeah. I will be working on something else for a little while, instead. Like taking damage. *puts on helmet*

Minor setback: I've recently updated the engine after receiving the latest build. Unfortunately several things changed at the code level and now none of my code works, so I'm having to rewrite half of everything I've written. I'm doing this to fix a big glitch in the old version which made jumping harder to implement, as well as access all the latest and greatest editor tools.

This means, though, that I might not actually get a video with anything new next Sunday. I'll try, but...

Well, (almost) everything is running again. To top it off, Pivot can jump now!

Just for laughs, here's a story: normally, when the Gunpuppy fires a shot, the bullet should get propelled with a set amount of force. However, the update made it so that the Gunpuppy would propel itself when it fired. Doh!

I probably will keep that code around and show it to you in the video, which, yes, I will be able to post.

A week and a day later, Chromalisk!

As much as I look forward to taking Physics and Economics, I hate to say that school will be starting again in a week. While I will be cramming whenever I can to get more done in these last 6 days, it is hard because I can only work from one computer. Once school starts, I cannot promise any regularity at all. (But I will aim for a video every two weeks) I will do my best to work through school the best I can and still have time to work on Elemedals, but I am afraid that on many days I will be too tired out and will just want to do something recreational.

That being said, slow and steady wins the race! It will be a slow, grulling race, but I will go in swining. Even though I will get no money from this, I think I have enough dedication to make it work.

I think one of the next steps would be working on attacking. (i.e. Test Model Sword/Gun/Bomb)
Or maybe the wolvers or lumbers. Probably the lumbers, they show up more frequently in the beginning, so it would make sense for him to be the next enemy.
I hope that school does not get in the way of you being awesome!
Good work, And good luck.

Somehow I had forgotten about attacking. Yes, that's probably a good idea. While I am still in the loop of getting the Chormalisk's AI a bit more advanced, after that, I will definitely go to attacks and damage types. I've already written a lose system on what this should look like, and I shall probably be deep in the mires of coding for at least a month before I come back here to show what I've done, but it should be awesome.

Hmm, have you have ever considered a story line or what kind of bosses for this game of yours? I mean, a 2D side scroller like this one should have a simple open ended story and some bosses to put player's skills and knowledge to the test.

A word of advice.

When you work on the bosses, Don't show us anything.
We want the attack patterns kept secret.
We need things to be kept behind curtains.
Our guesses need to be well earned.

So. . . There's that.

@Midnight-Dj

You have no idea.

Eon and Neo will indeed host separate stories, and you will dabble in them both before the game's story finishes. (I will hope to make it somewhat repayable, without content overload.) Indeed, I will do my best. I shall only post prologues, nothing more. These shall whet your appetite, I hope.

One is already written.

@Liminori

I shall honor that, and it is indeed what I've wanted to do. I have already told the names of the bosses in the OP, but I won't tell you how they work. Jelly King, Snarbolax, and Vanaduke will all get surprises for the side-scroller world! (Sadly Roarmulous Twins don't make the cut, both lore and mechanics-wise.)

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

While I don't have time to create a new video, I am proud to say that the slashing animation looks quite authentic. I also finally fixed the problem of the physics going nuts as soon as I used the sword. However, if you attack while facing left, everything looks fine; but when attacking while facing right, the sword is floating in space. I need to get a good way to tie the sword to Pivot's hand, so that it doesn't have that problem.

In the mean time, I need to ask: If you'll be able to move while charging and firing guns, should you be able to move while swinging your sword? While you will be able to move when slashing-in-air, I am not sure about ground...I have three options:

  1. Anchor the player while slashing.
  2. Let the player slide around while slashing. (Looks funny but least work.)
  3. Give the player a running animation to go with attacking. (Most work but best looking/functioning. I don't know how to do this yet.)

Any preferences/opinions?

Over the next week, I'll be working on getting the sword attack more refined and potentially getting a slash combo system working. I want to allow the player to attack before going on to doing fancy damage systems.

You are experiencing a SICKNESS ERROR!

Unfortunately, being sick last week has kept me from working on Elemedals.

In addition, I have a short story due for Thursday. However, it will be related to Elemedals. So...next Sunday I'll have that for you. (I will do some edits based on teacher's feedback, of course.) If I have extra time, I will try to do more work on the game itself.

EDIT: I have gotten to boot up the game recently to make a few edits. Pivot's sword is now linked properly up to him, so it looks like he's actually holding it, and it appears and disappears with correct timing. You may currently slide back and forth while attacking, but you can't turn around.

Right now, attacking deals no damage, flinching doesn't work in air, and Justen Bieber thinks he should be in the game. (All of these are glitches.)

So, Question.

Why not. . . Make the sword a part of the animation?
It seems easier to do in my opinion, Despite not having programmed anything.
As far as I'm aware, you would only have to work on the hitboxes.

Heads up, I'm referencing a lot of things I haven't covered yet.

I was considering that for a long time, but I decided against it.

Let's say I have 5 different swords that use the share attack animations. Due to the crafting system, this will make 3 versions per sword. This leaves us with 3 x 5 = 15 different swords. If I include Pivot in every single file, then I will have 15 more files with Pivot in them. This is fine right now, because I can just copy every file to the next and make some modifications.

But what if I want to change 2-3 pixels in Pivot's foot while slashing? (This is quite likely to happen.) I can just change one file and...woops! I would have to change 15 different files to change 2 pixels!

This is why I have to put Pivot and all the swords in their own files, and why I must go through the coding trouble of getting this system working. (It will save a lot of trouble later.) I shall be asking the engine developers for some tips on how to make this work better, because I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Thank you for your suggestion. It helps me to know that someone else cares about this project. ^.^

Daw, thank you! ^.^

I know that my ideas might be impossible to achieve, as someone who knows almost nothing about coding, but would you be offended if I posted them?

No problem at all! Ideas are appreciated, and you can't really help it if they're impossible to code; I'll just let you know. So, let 'em fly! We might both learn something from it.

Just so you know, there's a section about post formatting that might interest you. Yes, html* tags do count as code. To make something bold, for example, you'd say < strong >bold text here< /strong >, without the spaces. It works the same way for any other html tag.

Also, coding is a bit like speaking in another language. In English--or any other language--there are rules on syntax, spelling, word usage, and sentence structure. Programming is very similar, and there are a lot of parallels. The main two differences are that there are more rules and computers tend to be more picky than people. :P

@Colray

Thank you! The support is much appreciated.

You are experiencing an UPDATE ERROR!

A wild video has appeared!

Yes, I know I'm a day late. No, don't hold it against me! :(

EDIT: Looking back at all the posts in a row I've made, I feel silly. I do, however, have something to say. So I'll just stick it here.

When using a sword, attacking while standing still will do a combo attack like in Spiral Knights. Attacking while walking will do a thrust attack. Attacking while in air will do an air attack. Charge attacks will the same whether standing or walking, but some may be slightly different in the air.

The reason for having a separate combo attack and thrust attack is because I would rather not fix the player to one point while attacking, but I do not want the player to walk while slashing, either. A good compromise is to have another attack which triggers while walking, which propels the player by some distance.

While I was considering doing more directional attacks (think Smash Bros), that would be getting more involved than necessary.

For a while, I will not be doing any new enemies, and will rather expand upon what is already in the game. This list is fairly large, but here's some of it:

  • Get working damage and energy systems
  • Give Gun Puppy following attacks: Energy Blast(10), Triple Shot(25), Homing Triple Shot(50) -- (Numbers are experimental)
  • Give Chromalisk a bounce attack (No damage, stun; Replaces perma-hitbox on its feet.)
  • Give Spookat everything

Well, I intend on having a single monster from each monster family for the demo. This means that the next one has to be a fiend, gremlin, or slime. I actually do have a monster which is in-game, but it isn't quite ready for reveal. (Fortunately, this denizen won't have eyes, so he doesn't get to see how bad he looks right now.)

On turrets, most of the code related to turrets came with Frogatto. It took me a while to get the Gunpuppy working because I was still learning how to tap into this code. (And it was the first thing I created.) I do not think it will be hard to make Howlitzers and Polyps, but I will not make them yet.

Thanks for your comment!

Sorry to blast your hopes, but it is impossible to make randomly generated levels with Anura yet. While you will not be able to level up equipment with heat, you will be able to upgrade weapons with materials dropped by enemies. I will get into this next update. (But I can't implement any crafting for a while.)

As for the vendors...let's just say that we'll see a few new faces mixed with the old. :3

Implementing shield, bomb for clearing up obstacles and trash mobs, and guns for ranged attacks.
Shields are a yes, but I can't tell you how they work yet. Bombs will hopefully be really fun to play with, and guns will be fast and flexible. I hope to make it as fun as possible to experiment with the weapons.

That's a very high praise. (Thanks!) But I think I ought to say something which must be adhered to: The game cannot draw revenue from Spiral Knights, nor can it raise any money. (A rough quotation from OOO's emails.) Despite this limitation, my hopes are high right now. If everything goes according to plan, the game will feel like an awesome GBA game.

EDIT: Linkboy has given me permission to include his awesome remixes! No game should be deprived of nice tunes in the background, eh?
