I think steam workshop would work well because it would allow players to create levels or gear and submit them to the steam workshop for Three Rings to review possibly add to the game. This would for one make more content for the game, two allow the community to interact more, and three allow Three Rings to work on bigger updates or other games while keeping Spiral Knights alive. I honestly don't see why there isn't steam workshop for this already.
Steam Workshop
I wasn't referring to tampering with game files in the slightest, I was going more towards new models and such, but maybe that's just me being optimistic, i still don't see why they shouldn't try.
I'm not sure a lot of SK knights are going to take time away from grinding FSC to make a model that will never be put in game.
Unless they did something like TF2 where the creator gets a reward of some sort I don't think we would see much.
If a weapon gets accepted by OOO then the creator gets a special version of the weapon free (like a gold version similar to the gold trojan is a recolor of the trojan)
I see what you mean with the lack of people willing to put forth the effort especially with this size a community (although I feel its quality over quantity) I like the idea of an incentive like a golden version or some sort of crest you can put on your armor.
The special version is nice but probably not necessary. People would do it just for bragging rights. Its another way of getting users involved in things. And even if nothing is used, something might spur other ideas for the creators. It would hurt anything to try and give sk more visibility.
First: This is the most original idea ever. Of all time.
Somewhere in all of those threads is every argument I could come up with for or against this. Personally I'm for it; the ToS can be rewritten (heck, probably should be if they did something like this) and the community could come up with a lot of content that would take OOO months to create with their limited dev staff. Of course there would be an absolutely massive amount of stuff to search through if they wanted to ever use any of it, but hey, that's what the Suggestions forum is too, right?
Another big theme in a lot of those threads is user-created levels. That would probably be easier to implement than user-created items and gear, since levels are much simpler and for the most part do not require new art assets. All they would need is an editor that lets you create chunks, specialized rooms, doors, traps, place monsters, etc - which I imagine they already have in some form for internal level development. If those tools were released to the community, the new designs could be used in arcade levels (after being curated of course) or have an event based on user-created levels.
Yay community! The biggest concern I have for it is time taken away from development of other things, but from the way things have been going recently I feel like that's not a legitimate excuse for anything at OOO anymore.
Yes, this would be the best move SEGA could make, as it would give new meaning to what our game is while staying true to the original image. I've been saying this for a while, especially the level editor which is already half baked in the form of guild halls.
I could also see some sort of special something being given to successful map makers, like one of whatever accessory they desire, or just tons of energy, or a unique reskin.
It could be done with another freebie event like the hat. Even with a rush of people not staying, some would if people were kind to noobs. It could be a nice little pr gig.
If users were busy making the weapons they want and are proud of, OOO would be free to work on the money makers like promos, new missions etc. And most likely with less whining and complaints on the forum because they'd be too busy working on their next piece of gear to suggest.
The bragging rights. The number lists on the forum of how many suggestions were accepted, who suggested the most, most popular suggester...no time to harass OOO.
People contributing to a game would feel more like they are part of that game and would have more incentive to spend money on their game to take care of it.
Get a new TF2 hat for Engineer: Groundbreaker Helm! Obtained by submitting something to the Workshop. However to be able to submit something OOO has to make sure you have some idea how the game works, so you have to be at least Knight Elite to submit content.
You wouldn't want to do a rp gig then have a bunch of flybys flooding the workshop with litter.
I want this to happen, let's make it happen! IT HAS TO HAPPEN!!
Seriously, my mind is already plotting out mad schemes and level designs, also reminiscing about old games I used to use the level editors of... If the layout were perhaps (for example) like the old Warcraft III World Editor, I'd instantly know what I was doing. :D
And to what Klipik said, great idea, as new players would get all excited and carried away, and just flood the workshop. Than again, the vanguards and veterans would probably be doing much the same. ;)
Rewards I think could consist of a costume/accessory of choice, that seems the most reasonable and fair way to reward people. First on my list is Military Dragon Wings! (anyone offering? :D)
I like the sound of this very much! It can give players a chance to come up with something good for the game and give everyone the chance to see the gear and vote on it! If I see anything good there, I WILL like it and fave it! This idea is a very good one since other popular games like Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 do this, so why not this game too!?
I dont like this idea much
I'm all for a level editor, but steam only?
we already have the steam only steam knight mask, I dont want something as good as a level editor excluding people
(I play on armorgames.com so if its exclusive to a site, I'm guaranteed to never get it)
also maybe have it locked, then opened when you get tier 3 clearance, things like arcade and prestige missions do that, it should help weed out some of the beginners who try to make tons of box only floors thinking everything will get added
Beyond the rank restrictions thing there's also the idea of user-curation/rating/like+disliking for something like this as discussed here that might also work, either instead of the rank system or complementing it.
As for the Steam-only part, I think it's probably easier and cheaper for OOO to set up through Steam since the infrastructure is already there. My guess is that they could create the software to allow user-created content and make it compatible with Steam Workshop first, release that, then keep working on a native system that serves the same function as the Steam Workshop. Once both are finished, the Steam Workshop creations could be displayed in the native system with a Steam logo next to them. But to start, Steam is better. Also you can do the free TF2 hat or DotA skin or CS:GO thing or whatever that way, which means more players.
I think it's againt the TOS to tamper with the game files (you can look but you can't touch). I would like to see some new models but the closest you will get is TF2 mods from people who came for the free hat and actually liked SK.
