I am interested in faust, and silent nightblade. I would like to know you guys opinion of which is better.
I would think silent nightblade, because of the three strikes and speed, and I've heard that faust doesn't do a ton more damage.
Faust, curses though on the second swing, but the charge attack isn't really usable.
Silent nightblade vs. Faust.
I think the same, still looking for more responses though.
That silent nightblade users LOOOOVE thier sword. As a Gran Faust user, i only like my sword. Plus, you can more easily get a nice UV on the Nightblade. As a GF user with no nightblade experience, i'd probably suggest that you consider nightblade. However, the Gran Faust is a fantastic weapon and serves me quite well. So you can't go wrong with either weapon.
They're both useful for different things, but in my honest opinion it all comes down to two things:
Acheron is safer.
Gran Faust can curse.
That's about it. If you want a solid, dependable shadow weapon, go for Acheron. It's quick, you can shield between strikes, and the charge attack is always handy.
If you want the ability to curse enemies every so often, you'll have to accept a little more risk with the Gran Faust. The swings are so slow it's difficult in some situations to make use of the second one without getting hit, and the first swing on its own is fairly weak compared to the two strikes Acheron could put out in the same time. Additionally the charge attack just isn't worth it unless you have Curse resist gear. Cursing yourself can be a death sentence in many situations, and the charge is so long even at level 10 that it's just not feasible for most battles.
Depends on what you like. I struggle a bit with Faust since I grew up on 3-hitters, but Faust deals excellent knockback and has curse potential. Also, the range attack is fun to use when you want to kill yourself (terminal for example). Idk, ultimately it depends on which type of sword you're better at. Acheron does a bit less damage than Gran Faust, but it's also faster and easier to use if you're 3-hit.
I myself went through this debate and chose Faust since it's cheaper/easier to get when you're already farming Jelly King. :P Also I really like that it just looks so much bigger/sexier than its wimpy cousin.
I prefer the Gran Faust, my first strong weapon was the Nightblade but FAUST is just great in every way besides speed.
If you're planning on getting the Vog set or swiftstrike buckler, then DEFINITELY go for the faust line, with the full Vog set it moves at almost normal speed. But If you're going for different gear, then I guess the Acheron line would be best, because of it's superior speed.

i love my grna faust.
nightblade is like moss.
because all the kings horses and all the kinds men,
cant survive the gran faust again.
who needs speed? its gota such a long reach. i can smash explosive boxes without guns.
Acheron, ud need a cahrge atk or real precise.
Speed? my gran fuast has no speed multiplier. its jsut fine. people like nightblade apparently, because:
1. speed.
2. UVs.
3. they grew up on a 3 hit proto sword.
speed=who cares? itll kill the mosnter quicker anyway.
uvs= one more 2 more chances for a uv. so? a gran fuast is naturally rarer.
3.=duh.
the chagre attack? who cares about curse. u smash em to bits,(literally. nothing, i mean nothing, has survived my gran fuast charge atk) and the curse chance is neglible. i used the charge atk 27 times ina row (i counted) beofre i got cursed. just remember to use it somewhere roomy. or with respawning hearts.
seriously. try knocking back witha n acheron. the speed is nullified, cuz the monster cant reach you (i have a vile striker for gun puppies)
Lumber? hit his back, run aorund, hit, shield, hit, run aorund, etc.
kat? an acheron wouldn't be any better. why do u even ahve one there? spiral court?
a slice of pie? you only need quarters (4 people in ur party, not 6) thus, 2 slices.
i have a notorious ability to be the last one alive on the lsat wave in arenas. (u know, with the 12 mecha kngith lag crap)
gremlins are dead, then i cna go: lalalala slice shield for 2 secons lalala repeat.
A burning oiler will burn u if ur close. it wont if its far.
Gran Faut owns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nightblade-series -excels- against Slimes, Gremlins, Beasts, and Constructs.
It has speed and very good attack power, making it an overall better weapon. It has no noticeable flaws except that it's range isn't as good as a Faust-series.
It easily handles all monsters in the game, though the damage obviously isn't as great on Fiends and Undead due to resistances. A Faust-series, being a slower weapon, isn't as good for situations with faster enemies as the Nightblade-series is. In fact, my Silent Nightblade is better on Beasts like Wolvers than my Damage Maxed Rigadoon. (After a lot of testing in different situations I've come to the conclusion that Flourish-series, and Thorn Blade-series weapons are useless for me, personally, since the Nightblade-series does an overall better job)
It's a great weapon for safety as well because of it's speed. You can easily cancel your combo to shield, and you can much more easily pick away at monsters in large groups; e.g. Arenas, Danger Rooms, etc.
The Faust-series' cons outweigh the pros without a doubt, so Nightblade is the overall better choice. I easily handle even Tier 3 Arenas and Danger Rooms with it.
From what I've seen, it looks like SN is the better sword, so I upgraded to that and am pleased so far.
Thank y'all for your help.
thank you for this conseil but i'm french i don't understand english very well.
i have a silent nightblade i love it but i haven't faust or grand faust
i have vile striker
i'm arnozor in spiral knights
You can just have a Nightblade in your arsenal. You have to specialize to use Faust to its potential. I've cursed entire rooms, sniped out many healers and turrets dealing them fatal status, and when you're equipped for it and know what you're doing, Faust is a safer weapon because of its very long range, knockback, and multi-hit kiting ability.
I wear a max curse Vog set with CTR trinkets, but you could do almost the same with sword UVs and/or trinkets + curse resistant armor (silvermail, valkyrie, etc). With two five-star curse armor equivalents, you are cursed only for 25 seconds, and you get only one vial and one weapon cursed. If I'm in a situation where I need the Faust, very rarely do I need to even switch weapons (1/16 chance after the chance of being cursed at all, if both my Faust and Remedy Capsules are cursed), and if I do I still have something neutral to the mobs I'm fighting.
I don't agree that Nightblade is superior. The only thing Nightblade is superior for is single target DPS. That's it.
On the contrary Faust :
- is the only weapon that can curse
- can easily hit 3/4 enemies at once (with a Nightblade, 2 is possible, more is HARD), so you'll be able to use it to full while the nightblade user is stuck shield cancelling every hit to not be hit by other mobs which were not hit
- you can go out of a corner while surrounded just by attacking (you'll die with a Nightblade)
- the curse is only on charge attack, and is not a problem if you carry at least 3 weapons
I can't agree with "you need curse resit". You don't, carry 4 weapons and /laugh at curse.
I can't agree either with "nightblade is safer". If you hit every mob, there are knockbacked, therefore cannot retaliate (or you have the time to shield cancel before they do). Nightblade can't hit every mob. Faust can.
I am basing my points on my experience. I went up to Silent Nightblade and almost did an Acheron before I tried Sealed Sword series. Well, at first I didn't wanted to try slow swords because I thought it was not my playstyle. What a mistake! I instantly ditched every Brandish I had (luckily, only 2) and stopped using Calibur line, to replace it by Avenger and Faust. They are so much more enjoyable, do much more DPS in almost every situation (yeah, you don't usually have only 1 mob sitting in front of you) and have some awesome tricks to destroy mobs (check the dedicated topic on heavy swords tricks). And their charge attacks are way superior to Brandish.
In short, at least try a Sealed Sword. You may enjoy it and you'll certainly regret it if you don't at least try it. And you may end up prefering it to Brandish line.
I just want to add that you indeed don't need curse resistance. You need four weapons (three is a little restrictive but doable) to play around curse, you just need curse resistance to be utterly unaffected by curse.
YAY Rangerwilll got a Silent Nightblade!
Of course, this is coming from an Acheron user... But I recently got a Faust. It's pretty good, and awesome in player versus player.
@Glowing-Ember Yeah lol wouldn't it be funny if someone liked Gran Faust so much that they got four of them so that even if they were cursed they coul still use it every time, charge or no charge?
@Lithanium Gran Faust is worse! ACHERON PWNS!
With my setup, I already can. Only once since I got my curse armor did I have both my remedies and my Gran Faust cursed at any given time. Also, that setup is horrible; you only need two GFs (three with no curse armor) and you lose a ton of damage versatility.
I use a silent nightblade, and I am very happy with it. It does great damage against jellies and gremlins. Overall great sword that is very versitile. I recommend it over the faust.
I havn't picked up my silent night blade ever against since the time I started using "Shield Cancel" on my first hit.
My own opinion is that I don't prefere the Calibur series as they Drive you into the enemy pack in the 3 hit combo.
Where as if you use the Heavy Sword line, you can shield cancel your first hit and stay still, with such a great knock back, you don't have to worry about being ganked.
Rule of thumb on brandishes vs sealed swords is that brandishes have better single target DPS while sealed swords do better with clumps of units. So that being said, Acheron is better for gremlins while Gran Faust is better for jellies.
Everything that Zealousd just wrote is correct. I'll add just that I find gremlins harder than slimes (on Stratum 6), so Acheron is more useful to me.
Funny about Fradow's story, because I had the near-exact opposite experience. I started with the heavy swords, and went up to 5* for DA and GF. After using them for a month, randomly tried Fireburst brandish line for whatever reason, and was hooked on the brandish series since. Loved the line so much that I made 5* of all Brandishes for different situations (though 3 of them are nearly practically redundant because they're elemental).
I've prefer Acheron/Nightblade line due to the swiftness of it all, and how quickly you can kill mobs by either picking them out one by one, or doing a charge to simulate a double-swing and sweeping range of a Gran Faust. That versatility won it over the heavy sword for me.
As a baseline, it's generally better to start with the Nightblade line only due to the fact that heavy swords are really only good when you can do a few (but not necessarily all) of the following:
- Have some amount of ASI from Vog Cub set, UV (good luck on that), or trinkets
- Experience with heavy swords to not always combo out due to the opening that enemies can pounce on after second swing
- (Reminded that I forgot to list this by Fradow) Heavy Sword experience to also know when a delayed second swing is a good choice against mobs.
- Shield canceling swings
I am still going to reply some points, still based on my experience :
- yes, gremlins are probably easier with Nightblade (except when you have tons of them rushing at you, but for chasing menders, it clearly wins), but for them, i found that a piercing sword, despite doing less damage per hit, have a better attack pattern. Perhaps that's just me, but i do fine with Faust for big packs rushing me down (melee and flamers) and Thorn Blade for those who try to avoid me (menders and bombers).
- I don't agree for the need of ASI. I am currently running Faust without any ASI on my alt, and it is doing just fine. But I strongly agree with the need to learn when to not use the second swing (that's what kills you a lot when you begin) and shield cancel (common technique that should be mastered anyway). There is actually a third very important technique to learn, which is the delayed second swing (it will dramatically change your dps output and your safety, once mastered).
All in all, it's a matter of preference. In this thread, most players seems to prefer Nightblade over Faust, but in-game, I certainly see more Fausts than Nightblades. Try both, pick one.
The nightblade also win for the ease of access.
I have a silent nightblade it is has a UV vs gremlins med.
so it so easy to kill gremlins i would go for the silent nightblade.
The first time I used the sealed sword I was also put off by the same things you dont like about it. Slow attack speed, only two swings, and the risk of cursing myself while doing a charge attack for the faust as opposed to the fast hack and slashing of the brandish line. Now that I've been using faust for quite a while and getting advice on how to use heavy swords, I came to see the awesomeness of heavy swords in general. Using the faust and other heavy swords effectively takes some getting used to but when you do get used to them, they're really great. I suggest you read this thread: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/13083 It really helped me alot.
You could state that without necroing an old thread.
I just got a silent nightblade and I love it. It's not as fast as I like because I am used to my wild hunting blade, but it is still sweet. I would get it.
all the talk about the faust made me want one. please can someone sell me the recipe (joking)
ive owned an SN and i currently own a faust. I had nightblade a while ago, its a good medium speed sword. its much safer then faust, as i currently curse myself very frequently. I like faust better because it has higher knockback, multi-monster hit ability, and curse. if you have a faust, i suggest dropping your remedy before you charge though and picking it up directly after just in case if you do get cursed, but wear curse-resistant armors and trinkets though.
I like faust better
Why is Rangerwill asking this question anyway? He is the one who generally gives advice! Am I missing something?....troll thread?!
Someone is digging the old forums :O....... O.o
Ok I need to tell yu some stuff. The Faust is one of the best weapons in SK. If you get the Silent Nightblade keep an eye on packs. Faust users keep an eye on your health bar before you use Faust's charge attack. Faust has alot better attacks but the charge isn't the thing that yu will want to use. Silent nightblade has a alot better charge. But If I were you I will choose Faust.
Faust's got large knockback on its regular hits, and only curses the player on a charged attack. Its normal attacks can still curse enemies, and Curse is an amazing status effect as long as it's not on you.
I think I'd be more comfortable with the Nightblade line though, due to the speed.
