Game Crashes Computer on Level Load and Party Buttons

I've hit 2 problems:

1) The game crashes, sometimes, when I hit a party button in an arena or at the Jelly King.

2) The game crashes, sometimes, when loading screens.

In both instances there is a slight delay. I can move my mouse but nothing happens in the game and then my entire computer locks up. I have to power cycle my entire machine to get usable again. No other Java-based program I use does this.

This has caused me a *lot* of pain, deaths, lost CE, etc. I'm sure my guild is starting to think I'm an amateur. I've filed several bug reports. Here are my specs:

Ubuntu 10.10
Intel Core 2 Duo (fast enough, it works!)
Radeon HD 4650 (Shut up, I know)
8GB of RAM

Java (from the prompt)

java version "1.6.0_20"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.7) (6b20-1.9.7-0ubuntu1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode)

--

I often have a browser open along with the game. I *always* have about 2-3GB of free memory when playing the game. I am connected to my router by ethernet, so my connection (or a related hiccup) shouldn't be the problem.

What do? Is it IcedTea? That seems standard enough. Any idea? I'd like to add that I have *no* other problems with the game outside of minor, tolerable lag.

Is there more information I can provide?

Log Files..

Not sure if this helps but I have *tons* of error/log files in my SK folder that look like memory mapping problems.

Hmm, not sure what to tell

Hmm, not sure what to tell you here. First thing that comes to my mind is trying Sun's Java JRE. Instructions on how to install it are found here.

Thanks Lufte

I switched over to Sun's Java JRE last night. Haven't stress tested the game, but things do seem to run a lot better. Will report back if this clears up after a few days.

For the record, someone has

For the record, someone has reported problems with the IcedTea Java Plugin before. It doesn't seem to want to cooperate with Spiral Knights.

But it didn't

@Lufte- It didn't work. I could always load the game.

Switching to the Sun JRE didn't do anything. After completing a Tier 3 run earlier, on load to the arcade, the game crashed and took down my entire system.

So it's not IcedTea or the Sun JRE. It sounds like a memory thing. Is it possibly something is wrong with my memory?

Perhaps, though it's rather

Perhaps, though it's rather difficult to predict hardware problems when the supporting software for this game can be a bit finicky. Memtest it up just to be safe?

Nope

Memtest came back fine. This seems to be related: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/11330

You installed Sun's JRE, but

You installed Sun's JRE, but you did you tell the game to use that one instead of OpenJDK? Just checking all possibilites here.

No, did that

Nope - Did that. Changed the path to the Sun JRE's path in the game shortcut icon on my desktop. I know it was correct because fonts started to render correctly.

Thanks for the help so far. I'm less concerned with losing CE than I am screwing up my teams in the middle of arenas.

Error

Here's the syntax for the actual error. This one happened when I tried to load *Haven*. Seems to be getting worse:

No Worries

Thanks Lufte. I imagine it's something mega weird - maybe a Java bug, or something with my setup that I just can't detect. The fact that other folks are having similar issues makes me think it's a Java or SK thing though.

I'm going to bite the bullet and reformat this week and dual boot with Windows (hard to do for a Linux guy, will probably kill me). I'll see how that goes.

Actually..

First, I'm going to try to update ATI drivers. Seems like ATI released new drivers in early May. Will report back soon.
