To help judge!

That's right, my Art Contest got over 100 entries and instead of squandering the joy of picking winners, I thought I might as well get the community involved.

Now, I'm going to do something a little bit interesting with this.
Instead of just having people shout out who they want to win the loudest, I want you guys to pick which entries you think should win what prizes.
The people who are the best judges will get some nice CE prizes, so put on those curly white wigs and get out those gavels.
Because this is Judgment Day.

And it will continue to be Judgment Day until the 21st.
At which point I will be announcing the winners of all the prizes.

I'm not going to mention the prizes I will be giving out or what they will be for, in relation to this particular contest.
Simply because I want people's judging to be unbiased.
Though I will say there will be at least 1,000 CE given away.

There's also no guarantee that just because an entry is popular, that it will win a prize.
I will be taking your opinions into consideration, but the final decision is still mine.
So do your best to persuade me into liking your favourite entries.

Entry Format:

Just copy and paste this form and fill out the sections provided.

Major Prizes:

Major Prize One:

Why do they deserve to win a Major Prize?

Describe the overwhelming feeling of cuteness you experienced upon viewing this image:

You don't have to fill out all of the fields, you can just fill out the ones you want to judge in particular.

Also, my formatting of this entry form was a complete waste of time since the code tags just change the font.
Oh well.

Rules:

There's only one rule, if you entered into the art contest, you cannot judge it as well.

Anyway, that's it!
This isn't a courtroom, there won't be any objections of any kind to anything, anywhere.
Now get judging, you kids.
Before I turn this gavel into a meat tenderizer.
Also, keep all general discussion about the Art Contest in the original thread, I don't want to have filter through arguments to read people's verdicts.

While a shoo-in for Most Dapper, I feel that this piece deserves a major prize. The lighting is great, and the few colors bring out all the necessary elements of the portrait.

Major Prize Two:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Valkyrie.png
Very imaginative interpretation, with good details.

Major Prize Three:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Cypreus.jpg
Again, very creative. Smacks a bit of W40K, and taking Spiral Knights into the Grimdark is a very interesting move. The attention to detail and consistency with in-game artwork makes it stand out.

So. True. The entire presentation is spot on.

Minimalist, and just cute by itself. No extra frills or add-ons that most artists try to add into a "d'awww" pic, which gives it even more appeal.

Again, nice style and atmosphere. Some interpretation, but nothing too exaggerated.

I feel this deserves the top slot. The entire scene fits together nicely with the colors and shading. I also like the nod to the plot with the falling capsule thingamabob.

Major Prize Two:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:SpiralGuitarist.jpg
Almost deserving of the top slot. The artist took the time and put in a lot of detail into making this serene scene work (alliteration!).

Major Prize Three:

This definitely deserves a spot. Well-drawn on the knight and background scene.

Craziest Crossover:

Definitely the best entry, has great art, writings on the wall are a great idea (remind me of first Portal)

Major Prize Two:

Why do they deserve to win a Major Prize?
Hand drawn (must have required a lot of effort), sort of reminds me of a group photo taken before fight with the Big guy (Vanaduke in the background looks really badass).

Major Prize Three:

Shows the second (first for some) main way of spending time in SK - sitting in haven and chatting with friends.

Minor Prizes:

What makes this the funniest entry?
I didn't find any of other entries funny, this one at least made me chuckle.

Most Dapper:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:SK_FlameLashArena.jpg
What is so classy about this entry, compared to those other peons?
Smokin' awesome, looks like a poster inviting to this specific map (cool idea), the guy in the picture wears the same hat I do.

Craziest Crossover:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Gremlintactical1600.jpg
Sure, it's a crossover, but what makes it so crazy it deserves a prize?
I wouldn't think of SK/ Spy vs. Spy crossover, and the idea of two gremlin spies leading each other into spikes and flame traps or saboteuring each other's mecha knights made me vote for this.

Unique Snowflake:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Tileable-mashup.png
What makes this stand out from the rest of the entries? What makes it so unique?
Original idea, great art. Plus - it's my wallpaper now xD

D'awwww:

Describe the overwhelming feeling of cuteness you experienced upon viewing this image:
I was going to vote for the Love puppy, but Salamander-tan is too adorable for that. I like manga-ish style of that picture too. Just look in those eyes on day 5 and 7 and try to refuse her (I dare you) xD

Finally over, took me around 40 minutes. There are so many other good entries I realy had a hard time voting for this. For example the ones showing knights in more realistic manner - they have awesome art and all, but I thought it just doesn't match SK.

    [MAJOR PRIZES]

Major Prize One
Entry:
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Siegefault_cypreus_spiral_contest.jpg

Out of all the entries, this one is my absolute favourite. The art style is stunning, the colors are strong, and the poses are amazing. I also really think this piece captures everything Clockwork Terminal is. You have one knight purchasing some recipes, a couple knights switching and fixing their gear, and you have the one knight who is waiting for the rest to finish (the one vandalizing the terminal :D). I also really like the graffiti on the walls, would be awesome to be able to do that ingame.

Major Prize Two
Entry:
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:SK_catsnipe.jpg

This piece caught my eye early on, the colors are, to put it simply, AWESOME. Everything is so vibrant and gorgeous. An extremely well done piece of art to be sure. Amazing.

Major Prize Three
Entry:
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:How_Deviliteful!.png

Ahh... everyones favourite little minions: Devilites. This is a crazy cool piece of art, the artist really captured the look and feel of the devilites perfectly. Very clean and neat, can't say anything bad about this. I love the little pink guy in the air with the TV. Do want a plushie of that hehe.

Haha, oh, I love this piece. It's funny, and so true. Trying to dodge those wicked chairs while being bound by the chains of lag is enough make anyone want to cry. Lag IS a drag. I also really like the art style.

Most Dapper

Look at this dapper guy! Great composition on this one, and the art style on this is great. I love the pose (dual pistols please OOO :D). Even those turrets look dapper!

Craziest Crossover
Entry:

The idea behind this one is awesome! I love it, and would totally play it :D By far, the craziest crossover. It's lacking a bit in the execution department, but the idea is all there. Good job.

This entry is very different from most of the entries, but that doesn't mean it's less good! Infact, this was executed to perfection, it's stunning. The colors are great, the composition is amazing, and it's totally original! Mad props to the artist.

There's something about seeing the usually mean and nasty Snarbolax curled up in his/her den with the little tiny widdle babehs that just makes you forget all the pain it was to knick its ass in the first place on your first days as a Spiral Knight. It has a dark aura to is still, giving you the feeling that you aren't really allowed to watch such a tender moment between the Snarbolax family that just adds to its cuteness.

Major Prize One:
Entry: {http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Siegefault_cypreus_spiral_contest.jpg}
I beleive this one deserves to win, because it not only is the most stylish and accurately to detail- but has a level of creativeness and ingenuity that is
unparalleled in other works in the contest.

Major Prize Two:
Entry: {http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:CYPREUS.jpeg} http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Cypreus.jpg (colored)
I beleive this work, "cypreus" deserves second place because of how utterly original it is. It takes from the original character seen in-game, and
displays in in a very new, and creative way-- making the bright, happy world of Spiral knights seem darker... and more testosterone filled.

Major Prize Three:
Entry: {http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Sir_Basil2.jpg}
This obviously deserves third place, if not a higher position. It Takes a character from the game, and gives it detail and realism- while throwing on a comical mustache and tea. Its brilliant.

Sounds like fun. Finally,

Sounds like fun. Finally, being artistically inept is working out for me.

Major Prize One:
Entry:http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:How_Deviliteful!.png
Why do they deserve to win a Major Prize?: This picture just screams out to me. The posing of the Pit Boss and the fierce looks on (most of) the Devilite's show that they're a force to be reckoned with. There's also this power ranger posing type of feel to the picture, something almost as if these guys deserve a game all their own and this is the cover. All That combined with a low angled view shows the supperiority of the species.

Major Prize Two:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:SoquiSubmission.jpg
Why do they deserve to win a Major Prize?: This one speaks outward in a way I don't see any of the others, in an epic final showdown kind of way, like that of Gilgamesh or Dante's Inferno (especially the latter considering the 3 beasts). The suspense of having this great hero surrounded by beasts and knowing he may be in trouble even if he manages to defeat the 3 monsters before him invigorates the soul.

Major Prize Three:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Tileable-mashup.png
Why do they deserve to win a Major Prize?: I had to list this one twice because I think it absolutely deserves a prize. All of the reasons are the same as the one's I listed below for "Unique Snowflake". This entry is a great piece of work and I don't think it should be sold short by any means, its definitely unique but its also a good piece of art and I think it should definitely be considered for a top prize.

Minor Prizes:

The Funniest:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Spirallag.jpg
What makes this the funniest entry?: I like this one. The thing that made this one really stand out compared to other funny entries was that its completely relatable in-game. The rhyme helps with the lightened mood as well and its completely true. The picture is also accurate, look at those pips of health flying off the knight, which further adds to the relatability. Finally the imagery of the lag itself, being chains physically holding down the knight not only adds to the humor but to the overall quality of the picture.

Craziest Crossover:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:OG_crossover_Cypreus.jpg
Sure, it's a crossover, but what makes it so crazy it deserves a prize?: Its accurate, its funny, and its a crossover. I really like the conversion from each respective game into Spiral Knights. The Snipe saying "Hey, look, and listen" adds a special humor to it for anyone who's played Legend of Zelda Ocaraina of Time. The art style also gives it a unique look of something thats dirty or battle worn, yet refined.

Unique Snowflake:
Entry:http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Tileable-mashup.png
What makes this stand out from the rest of the entries? What makes it so unique?: This piece is very eyecatching. Its colorful and has a lot of different shapes in it. All of the Spiral Knight elements that make it up, the enemies, bosses, tokens make it playful and memorable while the creativity behind it and the style of the piece itself make it one of a kind.

D'awwww:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Be_Mine.jpg
Describe the overwhelming feeling of cuteness you experienced upon viewing this image: This is absolutely adorable! The look on the knight's face is just too cute. Whether the Love Puppy is there to induce a trance on the knight or playing a wedding preacher role I'm not too sure but in either scenario it definitely appeals to a person's inner emotions.

OMG IM POPULAR~

I really didnt expect to have so many people vote for my entries! I feel like a celebrity~

However, the Cypreus and Faaust 40k-styled ones, if they win, are all going to my cousin who plays this game as he's the one who came up with the concept and blew me away with it. I had thought of doing "realism" knights but never 40k ones. As for the contest, I don't know if artist's can vote for themselves, but had my cousin or I not entered (ie: I don't vote us for the big prizes because OBVIOUSLY we deserve them. :P) I think I'd have chosen the following:

Major Prize One: Flame Lash Arena by Whiteoxygen
Partially because of the symmetry, partially because of the cleanliness of it, partially because of how the colors really push that old western feel. It's just a really solid and awesome piece brimming with (mist) energy.

Major Prize Two: Tranquil Days by TypeProton
Holy crap. I loves me some slice-of-life, but this takes it to a whole 'nother level. The detail is awesome, the knights are all fleshed out perfectly, and the perspective is magnificent!

Major Prize Three: Wolver-Walkin' by Kibblesalad
It's so...clean! And the idea of wolvers and gremlins working together excites me as it means I can use my two favorite weapon types against them.

Minor Prizes:

The Funniest:
Entry: Bad Toupee by Martinsen5
The only entry that really elicited a chuckle from me. Probably because I feel like this is troll-dad incarnate.

Most Dapper:
Entry: Sir Basil by GordonChoo90
My love for monocles is showing.

Craziest Crossover:
Entry: Gremlin vs. Gremlin by Iceni
I never would have thought of this in a billion years, and it was drawn out perfectly.

Unique Snowflake:
Entry: Cryo Knight
I really wish I could put something down to really explain why I'm drawn towards this piece, but out of the rest of the entries it just seems to stand out for some reason. Maybe it's the atmosphere, maybe it's the sort of machined loneliness and power that's portrayed. I don't know.

D'awwww:
Entry: Spiral Knight by Kobato1215
I saw this be placed in the contest early on, and it's still a favorite. Hyper-adorable.

Heh... Judgement day on the 21st? Pity this wasn't in May. Well at any rate...

Major Prize One:
Entry: http://media.spiralknights.com/wiki-images/6/6e/Final.jpg
Not only is the Cryo Knight itself very well drawn, the surrounding area also gives the picture some depth and mystery. The subtle effects like the electricity on the blade doesn't hurt either.

Ok... This one looks like it could have come straight out of an intro cutscene for Spiral Knights or something like that. I wish we could have an area like that in the game. Reminds me of the City in the Sky in Twilight Princess.

Major Prize Three:

Ok... So while I don't think this is the best way to draw one of the knights, this looks like it could easily be a new epic boss for T3 or something. It's got that intimidating presence to it. Once again, like the others up here, very well drawn.

Time for the fun commentary!

Why do they deserve to win a Major Prize?
This masterpiece literally made my hair stand, it seemed so perfect for a loading screen in-game, if my loading takes too long then I wouldn't mind staring at this forever!

Why do they deserve to win a Major Prize?
Simply master craftsmanship, if this were some gear to be crafted I would give up since I know it would be more impossible than the impossibility itself for me to goal for. The funny thing is, this "Valkier" artist has done it TWICE (Can't decide which one I should pick, but I guess is doesn't matter).

What makes this the funniest entry?
I love how this can relate to almost literally everyone in-game, and while others rage about it, others just try to find the funny things in it and this is one of them.

Most Dapper:

What is so classy about this entry, compared to those other peons?
The real question is, what isn't classy about this entry? Its painted in a traditional-like form with a traditional look for our Basil. The artist better know how fancy he/she is.

Craziest Crossover:

Sure, it's a crossover, but what makes it so crazy it deserves a prize?

I can't say anything about this piece of art although this will never be erased from my mind whenever I enter danger rooms, never is a long time. I can't help but remain quiet and just stare at this for too long knowing the author is simply brilliant! Its so uniquely ironic that I help but think.

[[MAJOR PRIZES]] Major Prize

[[MAJOR PRIZES]]

Major Prize One:

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Painting_of_Skolver_armor.jpg

I believe that this entry deserves a major prize as it represents fairly well the dream of almost every new player: Have an awesome armour and a big sword.

Though some would say that this artwork lacks originality, as it is simply a picture of a knight, I say that what it lacks in originality, it makes up for in technique. This contestant is not only knowledgeable in Photoshop or another similar program, but also knows about visual arts. A light touch of chiaroscuro, i.e., light from darkness, is used on the knight.

I find that this is also very fitting for the knight. The Skolver set seems to be more "pure" and "divine" compared to it's fiery "devilish" Vog Cub brother. Wielding the Cold Iron Vanquisher only enhances the effect: this knight is the light that will vanquish the darkness.

The fineness details are also applied: just look at the chain around the sword, the dents in the "crotch plate" and the glow in the fur. Blurring the background behind the knight to further accentuate its importance in the artwork is also a very smart move.

Thus, I end this justification with the statement that this entry far surpasses any other entries in detail and technique.

Major Prize Two:

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Final.jpg

This entry is made in a similar style to the one above. Though it lacks in detail compared the first one, it is still more aesthetically pleasing than the rest.

Firstly, the usage of chiaroscuro is very evident in this entry. (As you probably have figured by now, I am a very big fan of this technique). The glow of electricity on the blade juxtaposed by the darkness of the background makes a very nice overall feel to the entry. The electricity glows and illuminates the visor of the MechaKnight; a very nice touch if there is one to be seen.

Secondly, the position of the blade, the snowfall, and the burning of the MechaKnights "engine" gives this entry a very "movemented" vibe. This is where this entry beats the above one. When observing this entry, it seems as if any moment now, the MechaKnight will come to life, the blade drop, the head turn, and the "engine" shooting flames to power its movement.

As a closing word, I believe that this artwork deserves a major prize by how the artist managed to give the MechaKnight so much "life". We have before us a very oxymoronic picture: A Robot with Life.

Major Prize Three:

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Caelifer_pixel.png

This might seem to be a very surprising choice for a major prize, however, it is one of the very few entries made in pixelated form.

Pixelated artwork is a very original form of art, IMO. Many artist who use the computer to generate an image try the render everything as smooth as possible. Every brushstroke must seem like a real one. However, with this entry, the artist went in the complete opposite direction, as if the artist was stating: if I made this entry on the computer, why not make it obvious? Why try to hide it?

Assuming that this artist used a pixel editing software (like the old Paint on Windows), one could argue that it required no technological know-how. Perhaps this is true, but can the average person make something similar? In fact, can someone that is knowledgeable in the usage of Photoshop make something similar? Perhaps, but it would be very time consuming for them.

The simplicity of this technique is by no means any indication of the level of detail used in this entry. Look at the soft shading that is used on the knight's armour and helm. Furthermore, look at the completely original pose the knight is taking, the detail in the boots, the shadow that the hilt of the sword casts on the blue of the blade. The smallest of details that many would have neglected.

[[MINOR PRIZES]]

The Funniest:

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Saadiandwolver.png

Perhaps not originally intended to be funny, I couldn't help but give this image a chuckle. The Wolver armour is known to be crafted from Wolver hide. In this entry, we see a very awkward scene. The Wolver Knight and the Wolver seem to be friends.

Is the knight a sadist and befriending his future victim? Or is the knight as equally ignorant as the wolver and doesn't know that his armour is made of the animal's fur?

Regardless, this entry is funny to me because the artist didn't intent to be funny. In my opinion, these situations get the best laughs.

Most Dapper:

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Vog2.jpg

The lack of flashy colours give this entry a very classy feel. Sure, the image itself does not represent anything too "classy", however, I believe that class takes finesse, subtlety. In this entry, we can feel the burning of the Vog Cub armour, but it is very subtly done: there is almost now "fire red" in this entry, more of the colour is actually brown.

In addition to this, the pose the knight takes seems very majestic, a very classy pose to me. He has a sword raised, as if he were challenging an opponent (like in fencing, a classy sport if there is any), not viciously hacking away like many do in Spiral Knights.

Craziest Crossover:

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:My-Little-Snarbolax.png

Must this really be justified? My Little Snarby :)

Unique Snowflake:

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:SK_tranqildays.jpg

This entry is unique in a way that it has a very heavy usage of perspective. Many of the other entries is just one main object in the middle of a background. This one, however, has NO main object. The first things to catch your eyes would be the three knights by the right, however, the eyes shortly drift the Snipes in the front or the Wolver knights in the back.

On top of the number of elements in this image, the artist must have spent a lot of time on this entry. knights are drawn in every position imaginable.
No other entry has managed to display this amount of elements in one picture WHILE giving the illusion of third dimensional view. Most of the time when there are multiple objects in on picture, a simple 2D perspective is used.

D'awwww:

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:LUVScripting.png

I decided to nominate this entry as the "cutest" entry because of two reasons.

Firstly, the message written above: "Processing thoughts of you always". For some reason, when I read this message, I can't help but think of the :3 smiley. It's just the most endearing and sweetest thing a computerized Gun Puppy can say to a human. To add to this, the hearts in the image just makes it perfect.

Secondly, this artist steps into original grounds to achieve the cuteness award. All the other entries seem to just exploit and abuse Snipes and Mewkats for their cuteness factor. How come the Love Puppy gets no love?

To finish, the pink and purple colours don't hurt one bit in making this entry simply adorable.

The second one makes you d'aw with it's simple, yet heart-warming message, it's just too nice of it.

The last one has this powerful color, sleeping Snarbolax and this little thing in the middle, it's yawning. You only'll realize it if you look hard, but if you do, you'll die on a heartattack!

Wut?

Your 3rd choice for a major prize is a screencap? Are you a troll, or just an imbecile? I've held my tongue for a lot of people's opinions, but yours was too upsetting. I can understand someone choosing something of inferior quality, because it appeals to their tastes (see: almost every post), but this was ridiculous. I'm not entirely sure it should have even been accepted, let alone win anything. http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd463/aavb132/spiral_2011-07-19_21-5... . There; I just made that. Haz I made an arts? No, no I did not.

Full Disclosure: I'm only 90-95% sure that that is a screen cap, but even if it is not, my opinions still stands, as the poster would go from "not art" to "skillfully made crap"

I can understand someone liking something I do not. This is something else; this is someone choosing a black and white photo of a bench over The Storm on the Sea of Galilee. The other two were quality pieces, and several more, mine NOT included amongst those, were significantly more deserving of a major prize. Whether or not my actions were petty enough to warrant the sort of response you gave me, is entirely besides the point, which is that the man's opinion is so flawed, so tremendously idiotic, that If we were to invent a power generator which ran of of derp, a "derp turbine," if you will, we could power half of the homes in California, with clean renewable energy.

Oi, Shoebox, first of all, lets keeps this civil, shall we? I could have started to drop f-bombs, but instead opted for a slightly more complex answer, at least out of consideration for the forum rules. At least give me curtsey of doing the same. Secondly, and this is more to the point, where do you suggest I take my "[whining] and moaning" ? My complaints are relevant on this thread, and more importantly, I'm not exactly allowed to take them somewhere else. I'm not allowed to make a thread called "N3cR0m4nS1r's stupid 1337 name is stupid to precisely the same degree as he is," am I? Admittedly, ad hominem attacks are not allowed on the forum, but at least I'm not likely to get banned for my previous posts, while the former option might result in exactly that. So what exactly do you propose I do, shoebox? Judging from your previous post, "Shut the hell up"? No, not quite yet; I'm stubborn and petty.

Major Prizes:

Major Prize One:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Glitchpop_shoebox_fanart_smr.png
Beautiful depth, colour, imagery, composition ... Everything about this entry is stunning. The intersection of real photography with digital process/illustration is a personally fascinating realm (it comprises about 90% of my own graphic design), and Glitchpop accomplishes the mashup with a magic touch. "Magic" is the right word - the artificial elements are incorporated enough to seem tangible, but still hazy enough to evoke a surreal, imaginary atmosphere. And, of course, the concept is cute and clever and strikes to the heart of every Spiral Knight; after all, each of us is just a kid playing dress-up.

(Glitchpop, you're cool. Do you actually listen to glitchpop music? Friend me dude. IGN spookas.)

Major Prize Two:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Fanart-Rits_devilite-.jpg
Anyone who has ever sewn anything knows how difficult it is to construct an object in 3D; so, from a technical perspective, this piece is really impressive. What really makes it a winner, though, is the fact that I'm irresistibly in love with a plushie of a ##!@*!**ing Devilite. Any art piece that can make love a Devilite has some kind of supernatural power.

Major Prize Three:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Spookat.gif
I was going to put this into the "cuteness" category, and then the "unique" category, but it deserves centre stage. Lo-res pixel animation is essentially an exercise in constrained art, and the creation of effective imagery is actually much more difficult than in freer art forms. Everything here is spot-on - the rainbow wiggling, the stars sparkling, the running feet, the little jump the guy makes at the end of each cycle... This image is 1600 square pixels total and every pixel is used perfectly.

Minor Prizes:

Abstracting the most badass looking sononfagun from Spiral Knights's chibi-style artwork is a killer leap of imagination. This guy would destroy a mutant hybrid of Conan the Barbarian, Gandalf, and Cerebrus.

Craziest Crossover:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Spiralcraft.png
"Crazy" is right: this thing is ridiculous. Kudos to the time and effort that went into this Minecraft reconstruction of the Roarmulus promo material. The artistic talent and effort is clearly present; what held this back from Major Prize territory was the fact that it was a recreation of a pre-existing piece. You could have moved mountains, man! I mean, you kind of did, I suppose...

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Snipe.JPG
The truest art speaks to something greater than its immediate subject, and I think this entry is not only an origami construction of a snipe, but an exploration of the nature of cuteness itself. What do we find cute, and why? It seems like the reduction of living creatures to their most minimal geometric elements is a common motif - Snipes are basically a sphere with eyes and a beak. Using such simple tools (construction paper and markers) to recreate an already-simple design gives this piece an air of childlike wonder. In other words: d'aawwwwwwwwwww. Imagining this on a coffee table is a really charming picture.

The use of color, light, and shadow produce what I feel is the best piece in the contest. The artist provides a new perspective on the activities at a clockwork terminal. The splashes of bright color do not overpower the image and achieve a nice balance between bold and subtle. The attention to detail in the character's equipment is impressive, yet, the details didn't initially hit me when I first looked at the image. The first impression is of of the overall story that this image is telling. Only after looking at it for a few seconds do you realize just how much really going on here. Very well done.

Major Prize Two:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Sir_Basil2.jpg
Another entry that makes excellent use of shadow to bring focus to the key elements of the image. The largely monochromatic palate really conveys the sense of dark gloominess of the terminals that Basil inhabits. Despite the gloominess, the artist manages to give Basil a feel of quiet dignity and contentment with the monocle, impostocube stache, and cup of tea. Does Basil actually stop for tea time while waiting for the next group of knights to pass through? I think this well done image makes that an entirely believable possibility. I would also like to note that much like the real Basil, this one doesn't seem to have the recipe I'm looking for either.

Major Prize Three:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Painting_of_Skolver_armor.jpg
This entry immediately struck me for accurate details that went into the knights gear. The clarity of the knight contrasted against the misty background really draws my focus right to the amazing detail the artist put into the knight.

Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Spirallag.jpg
This artist takes one of the more frustrating aspects of the game and manages to make me smile. Many times have I found myself lagging while surrounded by a devilite mob with office supplies flying. I like how the artist created humor out something that few players find funny.

Unique Snowflake:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:SK_tranqildays.jpg
This one is unique because it simply has so many different elements going on. The alternate viewers perspective, the lack of a single focal point, and the variety of the knights gear, knights positions, and number of scenery elements included push this entry in direction all its own. How can you say no to friendly fellow waving in the foreground?

D'awwww:
Entry: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Snarbolax_Den.jpg
I was impressed that the artist was able to take something something as dark, pointy, and decidedly uncuddly as Snabolax and introduce a cute factor. The yawning baby snarbby has definitely got the D'awwww factor. I realize this is my second vote for an entry from this artist but this work was too to good to ignore.

Thanks to all the artists who submitted an entry. Job well done.

I dislike it because it is in no way shape or form art. It is screen captured image (ie: a picture of what your monitor displays) edited to look like a demotivator, which can be done in minutes. And I entered the dead and alone picture, because a guildmate suggested I do so, though I had no intentions of winning. I'm creating "portraits" for all of my guild's officers, and this was simply the first one done. They'll be lined up when I'm done.

Thanks for the very kind

Thanks for the very kind words people =) I should clarify because I'm not sure if it's clear from the image, yes my image is a hybrid of photography and digital manipulation BUT those jelly cubes are real. They're not quite that big, lol, toy sized actually, and I made them out of resin. I thought I'd chime in now since judging is basically done.
