So guys, I was on a roadtrip with a bad computer and nothing to do, so I made this. I hope you all enjoy! :D
But before you start, this is the sequel: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/43970
Chapter One: Cradle and All
Vot was late, again. He missed the shuttle to the launch site. Thankfully he was able to take different one, since the whole area was bustling with activity because of the scheduled launch that day. His letter was labeled "Important: For Captain Kadin's Eyes Only" and he was directed to give it to the Captain himself. He ran through the twisting corridors of the shipyard, looking for the correct hallway. Finally he made it to the Skylark Mail Room. "Hey Vot," Vot's friend Kiri said, "do you need help getting into the ship?"
"Sure, but do you have any idea where the captain is?"
"He's up in the bridge, do you have a letter for him?"
"Yeah, here can you give it to him when you see him?"
"Sure." Vot handed her the letter and Kiri left. Kiri was so lucky, she was an offical knight of the Spiral Order. They have been defending the planet Spiral for millions of cycles. Vot really wanted to join the Spiral Engineer Corps, but his application hadn't been accepted yet, and possibliy would never be. I mean, he wasn't terrible at building things, he was actually pretty good. It's just that sometimes, maybe even most of the time, his creations would either try to kill him, or backfire and nearly kill him. As he ran back his messaging post next to the Engineer Corp building (that required some pulled strings) he felt a letter fall out of his pouch. Went he turned to pick it up he saw the same "Important: For Captain Kadin's Eyes Only" as before. The letter had fallen out of the envelope. He read it quickly and began to fully understand the importance of the message that he was supposed to deliver. It went like this:
Dear Captain Kadin,
We had recently discovered a flaw in the plating of the core reactor. For the safety of the crew of your ship, the Skylark, we advise that you postpone your launch until we can correct the problem. Your ship is still able to fly, but the core's gases would build up and explode unless the error can be corrected.
Sincerly,
Corporal Damen
Head Engineer
The low rumbling of lift engines was heard as Vot sprinted back towards the Skylark.
As Vot came into the mailroom, a knight was starting to close the doors leading on-ship. When he called out, Vot showed the letter to him, hoping it would be enough to let him on. The knight side-stepped away from the door, and Vot kept going. He was getting tired by then, and could hardly think straight. Was it two lefts and a right, or two rights and a left? When he got to the emergency escape pods, he saw a map. He was at the back of the ship, as far away as possible from the bridge. He felt a strong lurch and fell into an escape pod. The hatch snapped shut behind him. He turned away in time to see his planet slowly shrink away, and then disappear.
He had failed.
The hatch to Vot's escape pod popped open, two figures were peering into it, blocking out the light that was blinding Vot. "What is this?" One of the Knights asked, "Is he dead?"
Vot replied with "Who are you?"
"A good question to ask you." The other Knight said.
"Do you have enough room for us in there?" The younger one asked, "Because I really don't want to be stuck on the Skylark when she hits the planet."
"What?" Vot asked.
"The core melted, and we're plumeting towards a planet, which hopefully can support life." The older one replied angrly, "Of course, I'm just happy to have a planet to crash on. But still, it isn't my favorite way to start my day."
The ship lurched, and a huge explosion ripped through her, knocking everyone off their feet. The two Knights scrambled into the pod as the entire thing tilted over. The older one hit the launch button as sirens blared and lights flashed. Vot again looked out of the porthole. This time he saw a planet free of cities, of spaceports or of trash.
But free of life?
The pod hammered into the ground, creating
a large crator in which the knights were strewn about. Vot was the first to come around, and began waking up the others. The older one had turned out to be called Kort, and the younger one was called Sly. Kort was decked out in full Cobalt Armor, with a Brandish and a Stun Gun, while Sly had an Autogun, a Pith Helm, and a Spiral Brigadine. Kort started rummaging through some equipment crates and was able to find some basic equipment and a proto sword. A comm unit in there pod flickered to life."Matqa to all pods, rendezvous at camp near the canyon. I'll try to get the location on your HUD's map." The line went dead, then started back up, "I think there are some hostile animals out there, so watch your back. Matqa out!"
The group of Knights packed their supplies and started out towards the point on their minimap, when they came across a strange building. In it they found a panel with a dashboard covered with buttons.
Before they did anything too stupid, Kort took a picture of the strange thing. Out of no where the grate opened and a platform rose up with a few strange figures on it. They were kind of dog-like, but were humanoid, and one was carrying an axe and the other one was holding supplies. Both parties jumped back in shock of each other. The axe wielding one charged at Kort, which was a huge mistake. Any swipes were blocked by his shield and the animal was despatched of quickly. The other one pressed a key sequence and dropped into the ground. The Knights ran up to the edge of the elevator and peered in.
It stretched for miles.
When they reached the rescue camp, a group of pods surrounding a campfire, Lieutenant Matqa filled them in on the main happenings of the Knight's situation. They had found a small city enhabited by a race of large humanoid robed slug-like creatures called the Strangers. The Order was setting up a base in the city, called Haven. They had also learned from the Strangers that the planet, called Cradle, was supported by a huge underground labrynth of tunnels and platforms. These clockworks supposedly lead to a core of unimaginable power. The order had already sent a team to investigate.
Vot spent a few weeks at the camp before heading to Haven. Everything that had happened was a lot to take in at once.
Those dog-like creatures turned out to be called Gremlins, and supposedly created these clockworks, and maintain it currently. They, along with pretty much every other creature out the planet were bent on killing anything that went below the surface.
Vot was called by Kort to come to Haven as soon as possible on behalf of "Urgent Matters".
It turns out that Kort was being assigned to a "Special Mission", and was ordered to take a few knights along. Both Sly and surprisingly Kiri were also chosen. Kiri was Kort's training partner back on Spiral, and they became good friends. Their mission required skill, and cunning, or at least that is what they told Vot. All the other details were going to be discussed on "Briefing Day". All the knights were feeling anxious about what was to come. Vot felt like he didn't belong, that he wasn't a knight.
The band gathered outside of the Order HQ in Haven. The door opened and they were ushered in by a knight who brought them to a small room. First they were giving better weapons and armor, then they were seated. "Good morning," an important looking knight said, "and welcome to the Briefing Room. We have gotten info from our sources that the Gremlins are making a secret weapon, and we need you to hinder or stop their operation, at all costs. If you fail, this new weapon will destroy us. All of your brothers and sisters in arms, killed. Failure isn't an option. Do you understand?" They all mumbled their answer. "Then I think you need to meet your allies."
Three Gremlins entered the room. All of the knights were surprised by the entrance, and Kort even drew his sword in defence.
"You will need all of these Gremlins alive." The important knight said. "It looks like you'll get along just fine."
The real quest had just begun.
As they travelled to their first stop, Emberlight, they were attacked by a huge mob of constructs. Only one of the Gremlins was a warrior, his name was Soro. The others were called Vakros and Plavise. The knights made quick work of the first few, but Soro took his time, only deactivating them and throwing them to the menders. After they were despatched of, the knights looked back to see that they had been flanked, and the Gremlins were leading a smaller force towards them. "I knew we couldn't trust them." Sly said seriously, which was strange because he was usually pretty light-hearted. The robots got closer and closer. They all nodded to each other and charged. Most of the bots were busted before they heard an ear-spliting yowl that forced them to drop their weapons. The cause was Plavise, who was fuming with the other Gremlins.
"How stupid are you freaking knights?!" She yelled.
"Those were our allies!" Vakros joined in.
"Now everyone, just calm down," Soro started, "the knights were oviously too stupid to understand that what they were doing was wrong."
"Ummm... sorry." Kiri replied, "But what just happened? Weren't they our enemies?
"No you moron, not after we fixed them!" Vakros snapped, "Are you really so stupid that you didn't know that bots are one of the easiest things to reprogram!"
"Yes, we are that stupid!" Kort yelled back, "Why would we know that? It's not like you'd ever tell us!"
Vot stayed silent just in case he said anything too stupid, but he hated the whole argument.
"You know that this is going to help, nothing!" Sly yelled, "We're wasting time! Once we finish this stupid freaking argument whatever we are stopping will have killed half the knights!
Everyone looked kind of embarassed as they kept going, with a single Scuttlebot following.
"How do you kill this thing?!" Kort yelled as he was knocked across the platform.
"You have to hit its crystal!" Plavise replied.
The group had became more of a team after the argument, and were only one level away from Emberlight, with the elevator in sight. A Trojan Knightmare was in between that elevator and them though, and was proving to be quite difficult to destroy, even with the number of fighters they had with them. Kiri dived right under the monster, and started hacking at its crystal, while Vot tried to get its attention. It turned to face Kiri, and Vot charged it, thrusting his blade deep into its soul. The monster slowly froze, turned into stone, its eyes lifeless.
The band ran for the elevator, excited for their next challenge.
They arrived just in time to see a Crimson Order Gremlin dragging away a knight, with all of his comrades dead. They ran towards the elevator they were in, but it left before they got close. They turned towards the fallen warriors. With them was the important knight. Vot ran to his side, and the knight whispered three words with such a hatred and fear, that it sent shivers down Vot's back.
The Chimera Project.
Getting into the Grand Colony was no problem, since Plavise's uncle was a higher offical in the politics of the Gremlins. The knights had to wait outside the city though, and Vakros felt a bit vulnerable without them. He was easily able to get in to some deeper medical groups because of his expertise in medical work, but still hadn't heard of this "Chimera Project" thing. But then one day when he was passing an important Doctor's office he heard something that caused him to stop in his tracks... "Yeah...Chimera...Room 27...top sercret...security code...1, 4, 9, 4." Vakros memorized it, then messaged Soro it in code.
It was time to venture into Room 27 and finish it.
Vot and the others were camping in an abandoned wolver den when they got the message from Soro. Everyone had a job in the final step of their mission. Vakros would find where they were holding the project, then Plavise would take out the automated defence and Soro would take out any organic guards. The Knights would creep in with the two Gremlins making sure that they wouldn't be caught. Vakros would open the room from the inside. Then Kort would clear the room, and Vot would plant the bombs. Sly and Kiri would cover their escape. After the bombs went off, they would meet up at the wolver den. Of course, thats if everything went perfectly.
Everything didn't go perfectly, although things could be worse. Kort broke his leg on the way to the outer walls, and Kiri had to bring him back to the den, so they were down two Knights. Vot was in the lab with Vakros right next to him, they were both staring at a vat on the opposite side of the room. In it was a mix-matched creation of several monsters, one of them a Knight, that same knight from before. This was messed up. Vot wondered whether he could really take the life of that knight, that poor knight. That thing wasn't a knight anymore, and even if it was, the knight inside would be long dead. Or would it? While he tried to convince himself that he could kill the thing, Vakros was trying to convince himself that his race couldn't be that evil. Then there was a loud bang and the door blew open and several Gremlins charged in. Vakros ran forward and yelled to Vot, "I'll buy you some time, just plant the freaking bombs!" Vot ran forward and planted a bomb, but was grabbed by some Darkfangs who threw him against a canister. All Vot was able to do before being smothered was pressing the detonate button on his controller.
At least they would go out with a bang.
Vakros hurt all over. He, Soro, and Vot were stuffed in a tiny cell. Vot had ask earlier where Sly and Plavise were. Soro said that they didn't make it. It was all over. They won, but at a serious cost. At least Kort and Kiri would make it out. As they thought, they heard an alarm and some loud noises. A grate above them popped open and Kiri's head popped in. "We're gonna bust you out." Everyone smiled.
"But how did you find us?" Soro asked.
Vot's face became red even before she said it, "I have a chip in Vot's bum." More smiles. A couple more loud crashes rang out. "Listen, that criple isn't going to last forever. The prisoners were lifted out. Vot was pulled out right before the cell door crashed open and some Gremlins poured in.
The band ran for their life.
It was done. The Chimera Project was ended, and although sadly, only a Knight and a Gremlin lost their lives in the process. Vot felt bad for the poor knight who had to be killed...
But the Chimera felt bad for nobody.

Chapter Two: The Next Mission
Vot and Kiri were heading back to Spiral HQ.
When they entered the briefing room the new important knight came forward. It was Kort. Or Lieutant Kort, who had received an award for bravery along with Vot, Kiri, Soro, and Vakros. "We seemed to have proved helpful to the Order, considering they've given us a new mission. I'm sad to say that I won't be joining you, but there's a fairly large group of people that you should meet. Also, as always, good luck. You’re going to need it.”
They walked into another room, with a couple of knights sitting on a bench. Vot saw something that caught his eye.
"Frost! I didn't know you were on the Skylark too!"
"Yeah, but I defiantly didn't think that you were! Wait, are you even a knight?"
"Yep." Vot had got his application accepted after getting his badge.
"Here," Kort said, "We'll talk about the good old days after I brief you. After our knights began attacking a treacherous palace owned by the undead King Vanaduke, our spies are reporting that a large army of dead soldiers and Trojans has amassed outside of one of our most important outposts. We have an ancient text that was found in Moorcraft Manor, telling of a wolver den, in which mysterious ‘Werewolvers’ hid a powerful weapon called the Vanabane. If this text is correct, this weapon is the key to holding back Vanaduke’s armies. The text gave clue to where it is hidden, but most of it is in Wolver writing. We believe that even today’s Wolvers can read this, and we are trying to get a few to cooperate, which is hard.”
“How do you know that the Wolvers can read this writing?” Kiri asked.
“We have no clue, but we can only hope that ether they can, or you can somehow find a Werewolver. Again, best of luck. I’m sorry to say that I can join you, although we all know that I wouldn’t be much help with only one leg.” Kort sat down and took off his mechanized leg. “See you later, if any of you survive that is.
As they traveled to their first objective, Moorcraft (they would meet up with a scholar working there) they learned a bit about their new allies, and Vot and Frost shared many a good story. The other knight was a scientist, who had joined to study these “Werewolvers”. The trip was relatively easy, as they were all skilled fighters, especially now that they had the two new knights with them. The other new knight was called Kantint, and was a skilled bomber who could hide anywhere. The other knight was Vot’s old buddy Frost, who Vot had nearly killed when he was testing a new weapon (he mixed a Calibration Mod up with a Mod Calibrator). Frost was reckless, but he could back himself up with skill, as he had a lot. They seemed to be fighting a lot more of Vanaduke’s monsters than usual, they knew that this was because they were amassing their forces in a tier one treasure vault, and would spring up into the outpost through the elevators, bypassing any defense.
The Knights’ only hope was the Vanabane.
When the knights entered Moorcraft, they saw that Vanaduke’s Trojans had broken in. A small group of knights and Spookats were guarding a door. They wouldn’t hold out for much longer. The band of Knights realized that the Trojans crystals were exposed to them. Frost charged in and dealt with two before the others even got there. A Trojan, looking just… better turned towards him. He raised a sword that was again, just… better than the others’ swords and pounded Frost back into a bookshelf. “You guys hold these things off of him, I’m going to find out what’s behind that door.”
“Okay,” Kiri said, “But make it quick, I don’t know how long until they get reinforcements!”
Vot charged forward dodged a few blows, then took out a Trojan and dove over some barricades that the other knight set up.
He entered the next room, and saw something that can only be described as “strange”.
Blue was looking around for the sudden change of volume, and was able to make out one of these “knughts” or whatever they’re called. He door was wide open, and see could see that outside the door there a battle that was raging. I wonder if it’s Wolvers, come to save the others and me? A Trojan went flying and slammed the just closed doors right open, sending the knught who walked in flying on his face, dashing all of the poor Skolver. The knught guy got up, and looked around, a bit dazed by the fall. Another knught came forward and helped him up. They went and started talking to the three, and last one of those stupid knughts in the room. This went on for a while, until they took that book of the shelf. The EVIL book. And they were heading straight for her! What did she do to deserve this? As it got nearer, She heard strange whisperings. Then muffled mumbling. But this time it got louder and LOUDER! She yelped in surprise and stumbled back. Then words were formed, words that were in a weird accent. This had never happened before. Then true words, sentences were flung at her. “The time of great suffering has come. There is only one to prevent it. You must aid this knight." "Wait, they’re called knights?" Blue wondered to herself.
"The knight is true of heart, he will prove it to you in the coming time. You must guide him to the Den of Zos’vakish. There you will find what he needs." What all of Cradle needs!”
