I don't know about you guys but I simply press the key that is being endlessly repeated. It stops it that way without me needing to completely close down the game or anything.
I too am on a Linux machine, I commonly get this problem when making emoticons such as :) or O_o where : or _ is the repeated key respectively.
I get the same thing, but for me it's / that keeps repeating. I'm also on Linux, running Ubuntu 11.04. Makes it almost impossible to trade, since you often have to relog in mid-convo.
My guess would be, it happens with almost all special characters and numbers. Key is repeated, until it is pressed again. This got me killed quite a few times and sometimes makes it VERY frustrating to use the /g//u///////il//d/// /c///ha///t.
I'm on arch too, using qwertz no_dead_keys layout, compiz, firefox among other things. Heard of "apple people" having the same problem though.
Are you able to download the game and run it as a Java application? I don't run Linux, but I've never played it in-browser either.

Does anyone on linux/mac NEVER experience that problem? I don't think there's anything I can do about it: never had it in any other java application / game.
I noticed this happening and found out that it's exclusive for Mac OS X and Linux.
About the ^^^^^ Problem, it could be that it has something to do with "nodeadkeys". But hey, I'm no specialist at Java.
I've had this happen for just about any key. Quickly switching to another window and back seems to fix the problem. But this is definitely an old, annoying, and long-neglected bug.

I'm not using Linux but the same thing happened to me just awhile ago. Typing my password and then some letter spammed. ****************************************************************************** Annoying.
This happens to me too and I am, as the rest, running Linux. I've noted it only happens with characters that need the SHIFT or ALT key to be typed. It doesn't happen if I press the SHIFT key, wait a while (I don't know how much, maybe a second) and then press the char key I want to type, it seems the problem only occurs when I do it too quickly. And if it does happen, typing the same characters again (doing it slowly too, like I said) works as a solution.
@lufte: I think I've seen the same behavior. I've noticed it most with ':' and '*' in trade chat, both of which need SHIFT.

I'm running a Mac and this problem sometimes happen to me. Sometimes, if I press the repeating key (usually for me it's a 1 or 2 from using items) and then press down arrow to clear the text box, the problem goes away.

This has happened to me tons of times, running mac OSX, usually it happens when I hit multiple buttons at once while choosing one of my top screen items. I get stuck with a 222222222222 or other number. Usually fixes itself by exiting the dungeon or mashing many keys while holding down the repeating key. Also, I don't run in browser either.
It happens often to me on Windows as well, to fix it I gotta type text in another window.
Once, I had this exact same problem with the 5 key on the numeric part of my keyboard.
Since that, I never experienced this problem again.
It still is slowly eating away at what sanity I have left at this point. Sometimes after typing a sentence over and over and over again without getting a "clean version" I just forget what I was trying to communicate and start screaming random curses instead.

Seems to be a considerable problem for everybody running Linux.
To everybody dying: Try hitting escape to terminate chat input. I can usually put my ::::::: problem on hold and fix it once I'm out of combat.
No can do. I urgently need to curse when that happens. And before I can do that, I need to get rid of the repeating characters, because otherwise I'd be banned for circumventing the word filter.

Repeating a previous post, the fix I've used, have told others to use and have heard of being used (with succes) is the ALT-TAB method (or any similar thing). Essentially 'focusing' on another window, or minimizing the Spiral Knights one.
The characters should then cease repeating endlessly.
That is not a fix, that's a workaround and a bad one. It doesn't reduce the amount of times you have to type a sentence to get a "clean" version in any way. Being "socially challenged" at times by not being able to respond in a timely and neat manner is the main problem about this bug I guess. It's often clear to see where it started in my sentences because usually that's the point where grammar + spelling stop and frustration kicks in. Like:
"Hey guys, have you seen that there's aare now aurora new gate today?"
or
"By the way, I think that I've $#§" §/$#' fu#$&%( fri#'§(= goddammit!!!!!!!!!"
( Also I started to put random people on my ignore list for making me type something that triggered the bug. Like that one guy who asked me where the spiral warden can be found... what an ass! xD )

When I tried to chat, I didn't notice that i was accidentally holding down the acute/accent key and it stuck.
ýýýýýýýýýýýýýý was flooding everywhere and i didn't know it was the acute key (probably combined with a "y" i typed).
My teammates joked, asking if i was from russia and while i hit random keys, trying to find the stuck key, the blue text "your voice has become a hoarse" showed up in the chat area.
After two more levels, in Emberlight, I finally found out it was the acute key. This sux.

Been doing that for almost a year now, retyping every second f'in sentence or word, often enough even multiple times. I think you should be able to understand how annoying that gets, unless you're 4 years old.

If you wanted to necro this to give it new life, a simple bump stating that the issue is still persisting would have been enough, because others would have chimed in supporting you if they shared the problem. Spamming 1's is not the way to go.
I have the same issue and it usually occurs with the "c" character and the only way for me to resolve it is by disabling JoyToKey and reenabling it. I use a controller and JoyToKey as I prefer mouse aiming over the analog directional facing and had just assumed the issue was being caused by JoyToKey as it disappears when I close and reopen it.

I am just glad mine do not include "slash." I am a bit compulsive about language, so my inability to use quote marks in-game results in a workaround that probably looks like a bad joke. This bug should at least be put in the FAQ, along with the alt-tab workaround and some kinda acknowledgement that the devs give a darn. I agree that a "won't fix" is at least better than conspicuous silence.

Why is there no reply? This isn't a keyboard problem, and I never get it any were else. It is an SK problem. It gets oh so annoying. I can't do :)'s and such, and I like doing that. Yup, get that issue as well. Not limited to linux and mac as stated above. I'm using Windows... Vista I think? and I get that issue as well occasionally. Seemed like a jammed key, or at least something where it doesn't register that the key isn't pressed anymore. It's probably the latter, so... that might be something the programmers can do something about.
EDIT:: Now that I think of it... it might just be something with the computer itself or its programming and might not necessarily be the game's programming. In any case, it'd be nice for them to check out what the problem with it is.

Most recently I had it activate while hitting the ^ key.
Usually the only way to fix it is to completely exit the game, then relog in. Though a bit of experimentation earlier when it happened for the sixth or so time, I ignored it and atl-tabbed to check something. When I came back, it was fixed.
It's happened several times since then, and each time alt-tabbing has fixed it...
Though on the occurrence when it started spamming ^, I hit the _ key by accident and it launched into doing both at once, resulting in ^_^_m^_y^_^_^m^_^es_^_s^_^a_^_^g_^e_^_^_s^_^_^_^_^lo_^o_^k_i^n_^_g^_^_^l_^i_^k_e^_^_^_t^h_^i^_^_s^_.^_^_.^_.^_.^_.^_^_^
Which is fairly annoying, y'know, but not a major bug if I can alt tab to fix it.
It's already amused a few people in the chat.. XD
