A question about forum etiquette

There seems to be a slight inconsistency in the "community rules" regarding behavior on forums. When someone creates a new thread about a topic which has been discussed before, the thread is ignored and the person is instructed (repeatedly) that they should have used the search bar to find the original thread. However, if someone finds that original thread and posts on it, it constitutes necro-bumping, which is against the Forum Terms of Service.

So, my question is the following: Is there a legitimate, good way to go about discussing topics which have been discussed before, or do we all just like jumping down the throats of anyone who wants to do so? If it is the former, then what is that method?

I see what you're saying, but I feel the difference is that most of the time people who bring up a topic that's been discussed before don't add anything new to the discussion. Thus, they could have seen the previous discussion by searching, so threads that repeat a discussion are in a way similar to necros.

So with regards to discussing something that's been discussed before: maybe search first, and if what you were going to say isn't in the first couple pages of results, then start a new thread?

Welcome to the Forumtrix

Only necro if you have something competent to add, like continuing a fanfiction or reopening a guild recruitment thread to accept new members.

The only time '+1' is acceptable from what I have seen is a thread like this or that, and only if you have absolutely no problem with anything in the thread to comment on.

In this section they have a stickied thread where people can drop the link to a thread and go home. In this section fanfictions get their own page on the Wiki and fanart has a stickied thread. Those kinds of tools defeat the purpose of bumping because the thread link is saved in a place that will not be bumped down without having to keep it on the first page all the time.

BOG's view on "necro" threads

If you just post to say something like "necro" or "hi", then your post is viewed as not contributing. Think about what the thread is saying first then type what your going to post. In this way you are organizing your thoughts. Or if you cannot clearly organize what you are going to type, ask if the someone can summarize or clarify what the OP is saying.

Its appropriate to go onto a thread and necrobump it with a sort of "Necrobump! But this is still relevant!" Or to make a thread acknowledging your uncreative nature with something like "I know someone has probably asked this before, but I would like the information still because of X." But have a reason to do so.

It is not appropriate to make threads asking questions that have been answered several dozen times, or to bump threads for no reason. For instance, don't ask "Voltedge or Combuster" unless you have something new and "big" to bring to the table. Kind of like a- "I found X way to use combuster, and Y way to use voltedge; has anyone else found them out?"

you may have missed

People responding to Blade-Of-Grass may have missed this thread, which is what caused Blade-Of-Grass to necro the thread you're currently reading.

I made some guides for things to think about before creating a new thread of necro-posting.

@Hexzyle

Thank you for your links! I gave both of them a read and they are very insightful. These could even be worthy of a sticky.
