Hey guys, it's Latisan Sklay from The Arsenal podcast.

On a previous episode of The Arsenal, we came up with an idea to reward community members and help in-game players who are ignorant of the community (forums, Twitter, Facebook, Adventure is Delicious, Arsenal podcast, etc.) learn about us and hopefully join us.

To do this, we wrote OOO a letter. It's there, on the second post. Maybe go read it and then come back here?

But we need your help. To make this idea fly, we're looking for support. If you like our idea, please post your knight name down below. When we send the letter to OOO (Eurydice or Nick or whoever), we're going to sign it with our names as well as everyone who shows support for the idea.

Please consider reading this and supporting us. If it actually works, then for pete's sake, I think that every one of you who helps out deserves the costume piece yourselves!

And if you support the idea, tell a friend or four about this post! Post it, share it, Tweet it, b/vlog it, Keek it, whatever! We want to go as viral as we can with this idea.

The Letter

Tto whom it may concern:

This letter has been written by Latisan and Lord Hood, co-hosts of The Arsenal podcast, but we represent many members of the community.

We know that you are always interested growing the Spiral Knights community, and we share that goal. On our most recent podcast episode, we thought of a idea that might raise awareness of the community and potentially draw many more people to the forums, Facebook, Twitter, and other Spiral Knights related websites and content.

Our idea is to implement a community costume piece - maybe a helmet? The costume piece would expire in seven days upon being granted and would have a name and/or description that indicated that the costume was acquired through involvement in the community. Possibly:
The Community Cap.
A helmet granted through service to the community. Join the community yourself if you like it, and maybe you’ll earn one as well!
Expires in 7 days upon acquiring.
This item is bound to you.

This costume might be generated and distributive by authoritative sources such as the crew who finds fan art for Fan Art Friday, forum administrators, or maybe the admins of Adventure is Delicious, The Arsenal podcast, or other Spiral Knights related websites. The costume might then be granted to the creators of fan art Friday-selected works, helpful forum contributors, contest winners such as those from Lockdown tournaments, or recognizable characters from other Spiral Knights related projects.

Please consider the idea, as we feel that it might bring knights who know nothing or very little of the community directly into it. If a less informed knight sees another wearing the helmet and inspects him, he sees the costume piece and learns about the community and its rewards instantly.

If this idea is at all plausible, would you consider attempting to have this implemented into the game? If you’re not the person we need to talk to, would you tell us who to talk to next?

And if the idea is not possible, we would appreciate the feedback so as to not be left sitting and wondering what will happen.

Thanks for your time and consideration!

You have my support.

There are a lot of community sites dedicated to contributing to SK, through fan art, updates on what the game is up to, or just showing the general community the game itself. Having an item of such that shows these communities in-game would actually help people become aware of them, and possibly spark an interest to see these communities themselves.

A way to get more people interested into the game is always something I would support. For various reasons, one of them being that it could potentially bring more profit to OOO, another being that as the community grows, the amount of player driven force and overall support for the game increases.

OOO as of now is a company that needs money in order to bring in content. So, in this case, having a means to bring in more people into the community as well as allowing players have a better awareness of the communities out there, in my opinion, is a win-win scenario.

Agree!

Quite nice project I think that more Knights will post their work at forum and will help each other.
Costumes will be helpful with growing the community of Spiral Knights =)
Good idea with expiring items after 7 days, maybe more for ones who are very helpful?

I hope that, Game Masters will find a time to read this and think about it.
Sorry if my English doesn't sound too well in this post, but I can honestly support this project Latisan and Lord Hood ofc.

There should probably be variations on the costume varying by what you do. A different costume for artists, creating guides, hosting contests, et cetera; so if someone sees it they know what you did instead of having a generic hat. For example, some kind of beret on a simple base helmet for artists. Or a top hat for contest hosts. Classy.

I still want a massive rebalance update. Even if I support this, a cosmetic update. We still expect them to fix the game.

Hi all! We do have something

Hi all!

We do have something similar to this--the Purple Spiral artifact. The notable differences are that a) it's permanent*, and b) players sadly have no way of showing it off right now. I'd like for that last bit to change, obviously. :)

Speaking only for myself, I am fond of the type of system you're suggesting. I will keep it in mind. Please note that I can't make any guarantees about the allocation of dev time to this, though; the devs are hard at work on stuff like...guild halls (as you may have noticed).

*Unless manually removed by a staff member. We've never had to do that before, and we hope it stays that way.

Question for Eurydice:

About that Purple Spiral artifact, has anyone gotten it this year?

I don't know, but this award seems to be placed on discretion too. :x

Yes, we are acutely aware

Yes, we are acutely aware that the Purple Spiral artifact exists, but because of its lack of 'show-ability', its rarity, and its lack of direct relationship to the community, it doesn't seem the same to us. /shrug

Just would be cool to have something to distribute. The idea kind of came from having a cool UV-ed piece of gear to just pass around, but then we figured, "Why not dream bigger?" Kind of spurned off of our plans for an event this holiday season as well - would be good as something to give out to the winners.

I think to start off, there should just be some sort of costume item you get for activating your account on the forums. As of now, a huge portion of the community doesn't even know these kinds of resources exist, and I think a desirable costume would help spread awareness.

A more exclusive "community award" sort of thing might promote contributing to the community, although I think it would really just lead to people begging and whining about why so and so should get it but not them.

It's pretty easy to see where

It's pretty easy to see where you got the idea from, but in all honestly, it isn't that bad an idea. SK already has a code redemption system in it, so the only things needed would be a model for it, and to send the codes out.

The only problem I see is the 7 day expiration date. Depending on how rare the codes would be, it would be kinda pointless to everyone if they disappeared after a week. The whole point of the thing is awareness of the outside community, right? So why limit it if only 2-3 people a week, at best, get it? There's also the fact that it would entice less people it it was time limited.

But yeah, outside of that, like Eurydice said, it all depends on OOO to make and implement it.

@Patchi

Patchi,

First of all, I've never seen that Woot-ish toy ever in my life and I don't know what under the Architect himself it is for... ok, I can read the website... but you can think that if you want.

Secondly, yes the expiration date seems a bit wonky. The thought behind it is that most awards would be distributed once a week. Fan art Friday, contests, events, Player of the Week. All of these things come around weekly. Rather than make it so that before long, many people would have the award, it made more sense to us to make the reward an un-tradable limited time rarity.

You said that it would entice people less? I feel like it would entice people more, to try to get something that no one else has. To get it twice. To get it two weeks in a row. You get the idea.

But thanks for the feedback. Very helpful.

@Eurydice By clicking that link to the artifact page my computer froze for a minute 0_0 Just saying

@Latisan-Skylay You've kind of lost me through the entire thing :(. So is it like this?: You want to reward players who are community members and contribute to the game and help other players, thus helping others become more aware of the things like Spiral Forums, The Arsenal podcast etc.
That's really all I snatched from the entire paragraph :(

But hey, if its to help other players then I'm in =). My name is right

I'm with Patchi; there's no

I'm with Patchi; there's no harm in many people having the helmet. So what if half a dozen people get it a week; that's just more people getting involved each time and more and more people going around Haven showing off their shiny new hat, thus promoting the idea. If it's only a 7 day thing then no one'll ever see it; most people spend their time in the mission lobbies and ready room or LD runs, and won't likely see the hat (or gain the awareness) from their trips to Haven if only half a dozen people in the entire game have it.

You want awareness and promotion, then let a lot of people have it. Let them show it off, let them keep showing it off. When a lot of people have it after a while, just shows that it worked.

Explanation, I hope

@Xxpapaya - Spelled plainly, the idea is to distribute a costume piece to community members who have made an impact in the community itself. This might be for people who host contests, artists who are selected for fan art Friday, or other notable figures like that.

@Darkbrady/Patchi - I definitely see the reasoning in the 7 day limit. Maybe it needs to be increased to two weeks or a month. However, I'm a little wary of making it permanent, just in that once you get it once, you're done. I'd love to see people be able to come back to it again and again. If we extended the time limit, the costume would be shown off for longer, but it would still give incentive to previous winners to try again. What do you think of that?

Add a date/code on the name

Add a date/code on the name or give repalettes each time so they build up a collection of trophies and can actually keep count of what they've done; better than doing it and losing it thereafter. win-win?

@Latisan-Sklay I don't have enough energy/crowns to support myself 0_0 Don't even get me started on hosting contests............ As for the costume, well I think something not-visible like the Purple Spiral would be enough of a reward. The aim of this is to help the spiral community and all the players, not to get some fancy smancy hat...........

not to get some fancy smancy hat.........

Doesnae matter; that fancy shmancy hat is what will encourage most people to contribute. Not everyone is out for a huge reward or world-fame, but fact is that the majority of people like wee token rewards or some recognition.

Yes, but..

Yes, but the Purple Spiral seems more a reward and less a community builder. One of the main ideas is to raise community awareness, we think that having something that people can see and recognize will help this. The Purple Spiral artifact is a few steps down from this: few people get it and no one can see it. The Purple Spiral is a good reward, but it doesn’t help with our goal of community awareness like having a costume item that people will see and want.

Hey bro.

Don't feel like we're teaming up on you, but just to clarify a couple of things.

- When we said that the award would be good for contests, we meant that it would be a good reward for people who won the contests. We weren't thinking of awarding them necessarily to people who host contests (although that is a very good idea as well).

- If you're wanting the award, there are other ways we have suggested to get it. Draw some art (as far as I can tell, your art from Tev's GBC is worthy) for fan art Friday. Make a video. Write a song. Participate in an event.

- As for "fancy smancy", the point of the award is not for bragging rights. We tried to make it as clear as possible that the award is not primarily for bragging rights. There are two reasons for implementing the reward.
1) Community members would be motivated to keep making awesome fan art, fan fictions, music, videos, contests, events, tournaments, and all the rest.
2) Knights in the game who don't know about the community can learn about this awesome community by seeing and inspecting someone with the hat.
You'd be surprised as to how many people don't know that this forum community doesn't exist (even 5* knights), much less all of the fan art, fiction, music, videos, contests, events, Adventure is Delicious, the million other blogs, tournaments, and everything else. It's a way to get as many people as possible into the community.

Maybe that clears up some doubts?

It has no description or specific name on it for some reason. The actual item in my inventory is this, not this which has a slightly different icon.

Why are we talking about me? We should be talking about rewarding people who contribute stuff like fanart, fanfictions, fan-atics, Wiki contributions, guide writers, et cetera. People who do stuff. Anyone have ideas on what we should give them or are we playing patty cake? Tev said Three Rings contributed some stuff for prizes for the contest which concluded not too long ago. How about she gets a nice little hat for hosting that? A medal is nice, but the only way other people can see it without standing next to you is through Steam inventories; even then it just says the item is named 'Artifact' with no description or anything. How are people supposed to know you earned it by doing something? Vliddles thought it was the exact same thing as the promo item from back when Blast Network was new. It came with the Plasmatech costume set.

I thought it was because you made such good suggestions. :\

(Yes, I like your suggestions. The only thing I don't like is the occasional berating of other's ideas, but meh. We each have our own methods of dealing with crap topics, and I guess this isn't a good place to talk about this because I am technically derailing the thread by doing this.)

Oh, and Canine, that won't work. What would be nice is if it was some special costume or something that normal players could see and inspect. If it had a description saying how it's obtained, then it would have a good purpose. You can't see any description at all on prestige badges.

What did I do?

Oh, the medal thing. Maybe one day a bunch of my stuff might be used for new content like that bomb that inflicts a status that prevents the afflicted from inflicting statuses while statuses are statusing statusly everywhere. What the li- In the distant future. Maybe. I hope. Not me getting a medal or whatever, getting rebalances and what not. I would be more than satisfied with the new and/or rebalanced stuff than getting something to stuff up my nostrils but no one else can see it. But what about people who still want the nostril medal for hosting events, writing fanfiction, making art, creating guides; things that contribute to the community. Did Tev get one of those fancy purple medals for hosting that event? Have any guide writers received the medal? Did Soldier lie when he said every one of us deserves a medal? Well, yes. He did. Soldier is crazy.

Now I feel like some TF2.
