I'm relatively new and I've noticed that there's not many people running around in Haven very often (max I see at any given time is maybe 25 people). Is the Spiral Knights population really small or am I missing something? I enjoy talking with randos and lately it feels like I'm running into the same ones over and over. Is this game dying or has the population/community always been like this?

Like I said, I'm new so apologies in advance if I am indeed missing something here.

What are your guesses on the total population [of actual active players] in the game right now?

There are many different

There are many different haven instances and the game tends to put you in a haven with people on your friends list which creates sorta of an illusion of seeing the same people over and over.

haven 1 is usually crowded, altho ive never really counted and i prefer ready room over random trade requests anytime lol

on special occasions ppl get together

u can also see population of players in each gate i think, then there are like 50-200 pvpers together in EU and US at all times and some mission runners i guess

oh yea and this is what it looked like when game launched on steam(i think they had that promo going on with 1st price all steam games for free)

changes to game deflate Haven

Changes to the game (ready room, missions, supply depot, guild halls) have decreased the number of people who can be seen in Haven. You should not take low Haven populations as a sign that there are fewer people in the game.

Assuming that the price of CE isn't being heavily manipulated, you can infer something about the health of the population from it. I mean, if no one were spending real money on CE, then the pool of CE would start drying up, and CE prices would skyrocket. On the contrary, CE prices are at pretty reasonable levels right now, compared to historical levels since the game launched. So, while this isn't a perfect measure of game health, things seem okay.

And of those 25, how many are

And of those 25, how many are alts? How many have more than one account open at a time? How many are developers, admin and staff making the sites community look bigger than it is for reasons of business? How many are playing with that script?

This will give you an idea of just small the community has become, try to find a true noob in Haven or try to sell a 2* item on the AH.

I have been in Haven more than once recently and no one was there.

None, actually. In the first place, that'd be really impractical (there aren't that many of us), and in the second, it'd be kind of creepy. We do have "civilian" alts, but we use them for actually playing the game, not hanging around in Haven being decorative.

Potential-Newbie, welcome to the game! Server population varies a bit depending on time of day (when people in more heavily-populated-geographies like to work and sleep, for instance, it decreases), but it's in the thousands at the moment, which is a "slower" time.

D3rp.

Also it depends on which Haven you are in. If your in Haven 50+ your gonna be lonely, but if you move over to Haven 1-4 your gonna notice alot of people. usually because players from Haven 50+ just go to Haven 1.

@Hyperion. Always had this question about your "civilian" alt: Do you guys have cheat codes or like unlimited money or do you start the game like the rest of us? Making a account and going through that painstaking process of trying to find a name that hasn't been taken already? :)

Civilian alts are on regular

Civilian alts are on regular accounts, no shortcuts! That'd be really boring.

Hehe

Hehe, yeah, I could tell the population of SK went down, mostly from the UI change, lols i should know, I took a break from SK after that came, its too frustrating now, cant see my crown and CE amount without having to: unlock HUD, and then click on arsenal.
Besides, school is all cramming now before the summer break

so much misinformation

I could tell the population of SK went down, mostly from the UI change

This sounds anecdotal at best. I doubt that you can tell in any reliable way. And how would you know that the UI change is the reason?

cant see my crown and CE amount without having to: unlock HUD, and then click on arsenal

It is easy to make a keyboard shortcut for your arsenal. My shortcut has been the I key, for two years straight now. There is no need to unlock the HUD and click with the mouse.

Out of curiosity; have you personally purchased CE, or Elevator pass/etc.? I'm quite fond of the elevator passes... they make the game so much less stressful, and it's nice to have mist waiting when I make a mistake.

Also, do you get any sort of CE bonus for playing? That would be sweet!

You should visit Haven some time, it's nice this time of year!

Game is dying, that's what's happening

No new content usually got people to stop playing for a while, but I am sure lots of people still enjoyed the game or occasionally came up again when in a spiral knights mood.

3 rings killed the game howver, and people that didn't wanna conform because of principles, have quit playing. 3 Rings underestimates this problem. The game used to peak around 1600 on an average day, now the game even struggles to stay around 1000. And that within such a short time. Coincidence?
People have/had built great contacts in the game, and the more leave, the bigger the chain reaction is. Many people's guilds are dying of activity. Only the loyal of the loyalists are still playing. Personally my take on this is, if you dont like the direction, your statement doesnt have much credibility if you still play.

Nobody ever bums in Haven

Nobody ever bums in Haven Square, ever. They are either in Lockdown or the Clockworks. Besides this is a game intended to play with 2-4 people (PvE) or 8-12 people (PvP)--so a lack of players shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

Considering the time you

Considering the time you posted at, you're probably living in Asia? I used to play at the same time, I'm from EU but had free time in the morning which coincides with eastern-asian usual playtime. Well you're right about SK beeing deserted at that moment of the day. I can witness I often was alone in haven and could not find a random party, like none, zero, nada. Now this will never change so the only option is to play at a different time.

But it is also true the game has less players than before despite the likes of the eternal SK defenders. At least for the Steam SK players, I've some datas and the numbers are quite low compaired to two years ago (which is normal since it was the steam launch) but even 1.5 or 1 year ago.. There is a decreasing trend in players, veterans get bored and leave, that is normal, but you need to replace them with newcomers. Since SK is F2P I don't feel they've a problem getting newbies around, but more to make them stick to the game. But heh, they'll tell you everything is fine with the game population, dellusion...

something else to think about

It's the end of the school year. That means exams, warm weather, all that stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if all E- and T-rated MMOs, and to a lesser extent M-rated ones, had a population drop for two or three months in the spring.

It depends.

It depends. Some days Haven is crowded with what seems to be 50-70 people. Just this morning, I logged
on and there were only 4 other people in the town square. Either way, most people are generally down in the
clockworks, running missions, or PvPing in the coliseum. Oh yeah by the way, whatever you do, avoid the
coliseum until you get a sword in the Flourish series or one of its subseries ("toothpicks" as we call them).
It's pretty much a waste of crowns until you have one.
