Attention all Knights: your next mission isn't in the Clockworks.

We're making a new trailer for Spiral Knights, and we want to showcase what you, the community, specifically love about the game!
Behold! A Spiral Knights competition: The Spiral Knights Trailer Storyboard!
A storyboard lays out the elements that make up a video, the sequence of visuals, transitions, and text that tell a story.
We want to invite you all to create the storyboard for the trailer video you’d like to see to introduce Spiral Knights to new players and remind existing players why they love the game.

A winning submission could even be used as inspiration for the creation of a new trailer.

πŸ“œ Rules

There aren't any limits on how you construct your narrative, but keep in mind that video trailers are typically 60-90 seconds long and give their audience 3-5 seconds to digest each "cut" - a reflection of attention span and the time needed to take in an image.

  • Your storyboard should be between five and ten panels.
  • Draw it by hand or digitally; both are welcome.
  • A little text to support your panels is fine, but let the visuals do the talking.
  • One entry per account.

πŸ“… Deadline extended!
To compensate for the upload limit and wiki downtime, we're extending the deadline to Sunday, June 7th, at 11:59 PM Pacific.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Submission Format

We recommend using a sequence like the flow below. Use any imagery that fits - game screenshots, your own drawings, or a mix of both - to help explain the impression each step should make. Duplicate that as many times as you think makes sense to tell your story. See an example of a storyboard structure table here.

Preferred file formats are png, jpg, jpeg and webp.

Once ready, upload your storyboard to the Spiral Knights Wiki. Please follow this format:

  • Destination filename: Storyboard_2026_KnightName.png
  • Summary tag: {{Storyboard_Event|KnightName}}

(replace "KnightName" with your in-game name)

βš–οΈ Judging

We know some of you are incredibly talented, and great art will absolutely count in your favor. But we're judging on the full picture: the story you tell, the feeling it gives, and whether it makes us want to come back and play. It’s entirely possible to win this event using stick figure knights.

Everyone has a chance - and the best ideas could even inspire the new trailer. If your concept makes the cut, you'll be credited.

🎁 Prizes

We want this competition to recognize several different kinds of work, so we'll be giving out five prizes:

  • Winning submission (we'd love to bring this one to life!)
  • Runner Up (too good not to recognize)
  • Most impactful narrative (best story arc and flow)
  • Most atmospheric (strongest artistic vision)
  • Captain's Choice (the one that stood out most to our illustrious CEO)

All winners will receive a Golden Laurel! In addition to that:

  • Winning submission: Prismatic Feathered Aura and choice of any Battle Sprite
  • Runner Up, Most impactful narrative, Most atmospheric, Captain's Choice will each receive: Gold Feathered Aura and choice of a Divine or Shadow Drakon

🎬 What happens next
Once submissions close, we'll review entries and build a shortlist. Our hope is to use these submissions from the community to create the story you’ll see in the Steam trailer.

❓ FAQ

  • Does the formatting sample need to be followed exactly? Not at all - it's just a guide. Feel free to make it your own as long as the story comes through clearly.
  • Do I need to provide exact timings for each scene? No! Keep it notional - "quick flash," "lovingly long hero shot," whatever captures the intent of that moment.
  • Can Steam accounts upload to the wiki? Not at this time due to technical reasons. You can create a website account here if you don't already have one, or have a trustworthy friend upload for you (just make sure your knight is credited!). We apologize for the inconvenience.
  • Can I submit an animatic or video? We're keeping entries to static storyboards for this event - we're sorry for the confusion on our earlier answer! The animatic idea got us excited though, so stay tuned. 🎬

Go forth, knights! We can't wait to see the game through your eyes!

Edits:
- Corrected trailer length to 60-90 seconds.
- Added destination filename guidelines.
- Added FAQ
- Added animatic/video to FAQ
- Deadline extended to Sunday, June 7th, at 11:59 PM Pacific.
- Wiki upload limit increased to 10MB.
- Preferred file formats are png, jpg, jpeg and webp.

re: Team Submissions

Gotcha, that makes sense. Even if only a single set of rewards is distributed to a single knight, in the event that a team did decide to work together, and the concept makes the cut and is selected for part of the official trailer, could multiple people be given writing credit?
It seems like having a squad work together on this would help get it in order by the deadline, as well as sharing part of what a lot of us love about the game- taking it on together.

Question Questions

I am curious if the ten panels limit was meant for one whole trailer concept or just a part of it (like a single cut)

Regarding Wiki uploads

This sounds exciting! Looking to throw my hat in the ring on this. My only concern is that (at time of writing) Steam accounts such as mine are unable to login to the SK wiki to upload. Will this be fixed in due time? If not, where else could I possibly submit my entry as a failsafe?

Answers!

@Plushie-Knight: Collaborations are a personal choice, but only the knight credited on the submission will receive prizes and any potential trailer credit. This contest is intended for personal entries.

@Monseff: No current plans to share on that front, but I'll pass the feedback along to the team - thanks for bringing it up!

@Ainogommon: Each panel represents a single scene or moment in the trailer - not a frame-by-frame breakdown. Think "knights charging into battle" rather than each individual step. A panel can even cover multiple quick cuts - something like "Quick cut of several knights in different costumes while we describe customization" works perfectly as one panel. As you can see in the sample, each panel has space for your visual, a description of the action, any voice/text/audio notes, and a transition.

The storyboard should cover your full trailer concept. Trailers are typically 60-90 seconds long - short and sweet. The goal is to capture the emotional intent of each moment: what grabs their attention and hooks them in? Aim for what you want the viewer to feel, not just what's happening on screen.

@Fairbanks: Great to hear you're joining in! We're aware of the issue with Steam accounts and wiki logins and we're truly sorry about the inconvenience - we know it's not ideal. In the meantime, we'd recommend creating a website account for wiki upload purposes. If that presents a problem, feel free to reach out to us at support@spiralknights.com and we'll figure something out. We'll continue looking into the login issue!

To everyone, please let me know if you need further clarification! I'm looking forward to seeing those entries :)

one last question (silly me)

When uploading a submission, since the wiki has only 2 mb. file size limit.
The submission should be an individual panel or everything in a single image (say, ten panels in one picture)
My main concern is that it would be bigger than 2mb (but that depends on quality and image type)

needing clarification on two things...

Hello hello! Really excited to participate in this event but I'm seeing two separate points of reference here for length:
- "but keep in mind that video trailers are typically 3 minutes and give their aud-"
- "The storyboard should cover your full trailer concept. Trailers are typically 60-90 seconds long - short and sweet."

(1st clarification) I'd love clarification on what we're aiming for with length ^ and (2nd clarification) I'm interested in whether you could clarify if this is for a promotional trailer (i.e. on youtube/steam announcement), a lead video for the steam storefront, or both.

Super excited about this contest and all the recent updates! Can't wait to see what you're all cooking behind the scenes.

More Answers :)

@Ainogommon We don't foresee issues, but I'm checking! Please do let us know if you run into any trouble in the meantime.

@Fraught: Great catch! We've updated the rules to reflect the correct length: trailers are typically 60-90 seconds long. Sorry for the confusion!

As for your second question, we're thinking Steam storefront, but it could be elsewhere - the lead video players see when they land on the page. Short, punchy, and designed to hook someone who's never played before.

Thanks for the kind words, and we can't wait to see your entry!

A few questions

This is very exciting, and I would perhaps like to submit. But just to make sure I have a handful of questions about it.

Does the formatting sample need to be followed 1 to 1, or is a bit of freedom available as long as necessary information is provided?

Should *exact* timings be provided for scenes (as in seconds, not describing transitions).

Additionally, I cannot seem to be able to create an account or log in to the wiki, pressing the log in button simply does nothing.
Edit: Nevermind, being logged in here prevented it due to it being a steam login.

@Promethiean: We're aware of the issue with Steam accounts and wiki logins and we're truly sorry about the inconvenience - we know it's not ideal. In the meantime, the best option is creating a website account for wiki upload purposes.

@Gabunne: The formatting sample is just a guide - feel free to make it your own as long as the story comes through clearly. We're after inspiration and insight into what you love about the game. Let freedom reign!
As for timing, it can be notional - "quick flash," "lovingly long hero shot," whatever captures the intent of that beat.

About the uploading

Do uploads have to be done via the wiki, or can we use other methods like public image hosts, GH email, or GitHub directly? I actually created a separate account just for uploading, but the 2MB limit is pretty restrictive, imo

take 2 on the steam announcement

just saying something this big SHOULD have it's own announcement post, you know make it more then a subpost of a post announcing the rehashing of an old event regardless of the popularity. not to sound harsh just saying this is bigger then that.

i think the steam announcement was appropriately

the main goal of steam announcements seem to bring back old players, and the player count on steam charts shows how successful it's been. while this storyboard might be a huge deal to people who have already been closely following the latest updates, it's mostly irrelevant for people who haven't played for years. i'd say making it a subpost was the right call

Exciting Stuff!

This sounds like a super cute idea! Is there any chance you might accept video submissions, like animatic storyboards set to the game's own soundtrack? I know the main theme as it were is about 2 minutes long, which miiiight be pushing on the rules a little much, but it'd be such a good opportunity to do something dramatic and dynamic with the setting!

@Vyre-Acidlashed: Love the enthusiasm! Yes, we'd accept an animatic. Feel free to use whatever format best communicates your idea. Just keep in mind that we won't use it as-is for the final trailer, but the concept and vision behind it is absolutely welcome in this format. Go wild! βš™οΈ

Question about meaning of transition?

When you makes notes about transition on the storyboard, what are the examples of it? I'm kinda confused about it

Are we talking about like "slow dramatic animation", "fades away", or 5 seconds showing this "concept" or "animation", add dramatic music to or something? I wanna make sure I follow the rubric and the format

@Clotho - That's wonderful to hear! And while I'm here I want to thank the team at Grey Havens for the effort you've invested into getting this game back on its feet. I've been out of it for years, but the forge reworks brought me right back in, and I think I'll be staying this time! What is the goal of this trailer?

So my main question is what is the idea of this trailer? Is it like "A call to all knights" for a return of the game? Is it a trailer to quote on quote, go over the full aspect of the game? Is it a trailer to show the return of the game/revival of Spiral Knights?

Is it just to make a trailer of the game as if it's a new release, and you want to show the games story and premise? What the game is about? Story, gear, community etc?

What is the full plan here, so I know what to build the storyboarding around?

We're back!

There was a little delay replying as the forums were under maintenance. We're back and better than before!

@Donkey-Ahh: Transitions are just how you move from one panel to the next - keep it notional! Something like "fade to black," "quick cut," or "slow zoom out" is perfect. You don't need exact timings or technical specs - just enough to convey the feeling and flow you're going for.

@Vyre-Acidlashed: This made our day - thank you so much for the kind words. Comments like this remind us why we do what we do, and we're so glad the Forge update brought you back. Here's to a new era indeed! πŸŽ‰

@Resinem: Glad you sorted it out - can't wait to see your entry! πŸ˜„

@Aldrie: Unfortunately Steam accounts aren't able to upload to the wiki at this time. You'll need a website account - you can create one here. Alternatively, a trustworthy friend can upload on your behalf as long as your knight is credited. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to see your entry!

@Gustim and everyone waiting on the upload limit: no news just yet, but I promise you'll have an answer soon. Don't worry - everyone will be able to submit their entries! πŸŽ‰

@Gorgaless: Great thinking! The wiki does support .webp, so that should work just fine. I'll double-check to confirm, but feel free to give it a try!

@Son-Of-Vanatos: Great question! What we're after is your vision - what makes you tick, what makes you want to play, what you'd show a friend you want to bring into the game. We want to see Spiral Knights through your eyes. The immediate goal is to gather your ideas and hopefully use them as the basis for a new video, but who knows how things might evolve from there. There are no wrong answers here - just tell your story!

Go forth, knights! βš™οΈ

Will the rewards be tradable?

Will the rewards be tradable? (I ask because I'd rather be credited as "Archemiday" than "Archemiday-Thebard", but my main character uses the "Archemiday-Thebard" name, and would rather accept the rewards on my "Archemiday" alt and then transfer them over to my main Knight, if that makes sense.)

Also, I assume that .jpg files are also acceptable? The original post does say to name the file as a .png, but the wiki does support other image formats, and .jpg files do seem to appear in the wiki's Storyboard_Event category.

Without concrete information on how the upload limit might be changing, or how non-image uploads are supposed to be submitted, I will probably have to withdraw from the contest - this close to the closing date, I don't think I would be able to rush things through while still doing a satisfying job (and all things equal, I probably overscoped anyway...!). Regarding AI entry

Regarding AI entries, should submissions that used generative AI be disqualified from the contest?
I think it is not fair for others who put in work and effort into their creations by themselves.
This game community also has many passionate artists and players who appreciate the game's art style. I would be disappointed myself if the machine-generated image entry won or could compete with the real human creation.

Also, people are voicing concern in this post as well.

Hold on to your hats! 🎩

We have some updates!

πŸ“… Deadline extended! To compensate for the upload limit and wiki downtime, we're extending the deadline to Sunday, June 7th, at 11:59 PM Pacific. This gives everyone time to tweak and upload new versions of their entries if needed.

πŸ“ Wiki upload limit increased to 10MB! Preferred file formats are png, jpg, jpeg and webp.

Now for some individual replies:

@Archemiday-Thebard: Prize items are unbound, unless stated otherwise.

@Gorgaless: Thank you for reporting that! The webp thumbnail issue should be fixed now.

@Manlet: Love the energy, can't wait to see it! πŸ˜„

@Vyre-Acidlashed: Please don't withdraw just yet. The deadline has been extended and the upload limit is now 10MB! Hope that helps, we really do want to see your entry!

@Ainogommon: Great point, and we hear you! Our stance is that we're judging on the full picture: the story you tell, the feeling it gives, and whether it makes us want to come back and play. As mentioned in the opening post: it's entirely possible to win this event using stick figure knights. We're after the soul of your story, not just how pretty it looks - although artistic skill absolutely counts, which is why we have different prize categories!

@Arumigen and anyone considering video or animatic submissions: For this event, we're keeping the format to static storyboards. But... we got pretty excited about the animatic idea ,mayhaps more events will brew on the horizon! (Just a dream for now) 🎬

@Dudeonesix: Can't wait to check it out! βš™οΈ

How long should these storyboards actually be?

Interested in entering. I do have one issue though - ten panels maximum?

Like, if the trailer is 60 seconds long, 5 second cuts would need 12 panels at minimum. for 3 second cuts it would take 20.

Are submissions with more than ten panels allowed?

reply to above

I understand concerns about the amount of panels etc. BUT

I think it would be extremely unfair to those who have been working for the past couple of weeks on this under the max 10 panels rule if that were changed. Adding an opportunity for more panels would wildly change what type of story you tell/how you tell it. Much better to keep the rule as is, since those are the limitations that most people have been working under.

Thank you for your efforts.

@Clotho: It's very kind of you to be so encouraging and make these changes. I am hopeful that the next time such a contest runs, things will go a little smoother, but I understand that doing backend improvements on game and forum infrastructure is time consuming and complex, with all the unpicking of a legacy codebase. Whether it's just a little bit frayed at the edges or an outright gordian knot I'm certain you are all doing your best to make this fun for us all. (That in mind, a more developed fanwork submission portal on the forums might be something nice to have even if it only runs during competitions, but, bandwidth and moderation costs, I know.)

I'd certainly like to try to share my entry. Truly, I think all any of us want is to share what this game means to us, and for those efforts to mean something to you at Grey Havens, too. We came back to see where this game would go, and we want to prove it'll be worth the time you're spending on it by participating.

All that said, I have similar concerns to other users. I don't want to contribute too much to the invective surrounding AI-generated content (no matter how ardently I dislike generative AI), but I respect my peers of all skill levels enough to want to say I agree wholeheartedly with them that it is a concern.

I respect that your team is almost certainly trying to foster an inclusive environment where anyone can participate, even those of us that can only manage stick figures, but the absence of a firm stance on the matter is... understandable, but not encouraging, let's say. Diplomacy is valuable, and everyone does have a place here, but it would be very frustrating to put time into something meaningful only to lose to some vector calculus masquerading as a text parser.

Speaking for myself? I would sooner cede my place to a loose moodboard of game screenshots than to a data-scraper that neither understands nor cares for the work both your team and your players have done.

If the spirit of the contest is to tell you what matters to us from the heart, I can only hope that means that even the simplest stick-figure impression of a moment that a player treasures has as much potential as you've promised. Half of the love I have for this game comes from Ian McConville's timeless art direction. The other half is from the people I met while enjoying playing it. This contest - and future ones, hopefully - represents the moments where community and creativity meet. As I understand it, Spiral Knights itself exists as a sort of passion project - now more than ever. I don't believe your team ever would turn its back on that authentic human history and authentic human creativity, but I still think it's important you hear it from us; "It matters." Thanks for your time, and again for the lengths you've gone to to make this happen for us.

EDIT: Post withdrawn; clarification has been provided by an admin.

(@Ouroboros-Of-Doom, @Yatez: I can't speak on behalf of forum administrators but the rules text seems to indicate that the 5-to-10 panel limit is primarily a guideline.

I'm reasonably sure that one or two extra storyboard panels wouldn't hurt. A number of submissions already on the wiki feature many more than that, but it's probably best to keep things clear and focused.)

On panels, AI, and good vibes

@Ouroboros-Of-Doom: The panel limit stands at five to ten as posted in OP - short and sweet is the goal here! Think of each panel as a scene, not a second-by-second breakdown. A single panel can cover a lot of ground.

@Yatez: Exactly right, and well said - thank you!

@Legendarios and @Vyre-Acidlashed: On AI: we hear you, and we genuinely appreciate you sharing this so thoughtfully. We do prefer entries that come from the heart - no AI. That said, we won't be disqualifying entries on that basis alone, because ultimately what we're judging is whether we can feel the player behind the story. A stick figure drawn with love will always speak louder than something perfect without a soul. This event in particular is about seeing the game through your eyes - because our perspective as a team isn't the same as yours as players, and that's exactly what we'd like to see. Thank you both for sharing this so thoughtfully. Comments like yours remind us why this matters. 🎨

I promise (I truly do), a dedicated art event (AI not allowed) where everyone gets to truly shine. May not be for the same purpose, mostly just for fun, but those do count too! 🎨

@Spring-At-Peace: That's exactly what the extension was for. Take your time! o7
